Diego Maradona or Michael Jordan slowly progress to iconic status.
For those of us who lived in Trinidad & Tobago in the nineteen seventies and eighties, some were lucky to see the evolution of a young Brian Charles Lara before becoming the Prince of Port of Spain.
I have travelled the world and nothing can turn a conversation on its head like saying you know Brian Lara. I have received discounts from restaurants and even tours of hotels letting me know that “Brian is very welcome.”

I read a story of Lara batting against Bim with a certain Marshall on Bim team,a 16 year old Lara strode out to bat and the Marshall floored Lara,Lara got up after some treatment and serenely cover drove the next ball for 4,went on to get a few more.

I recall Macco hitting him in the head, however I doubt he was 16

I can't remember where I read it,but it said a 16 year old Lara,I did see a clip of Lara batting agains Big Bird at QPO and it mentioned this 16 year old.It might be possible that he was 16 years and a couple months old.
Ian Chappell referred to very young Lara as the Prince of Port-of-Spain, before Lara made his first class debut. He heard about Lara during the Aussie tour of the Caribbean, while they were in Trinidad.

Pretty sure that was 1988 at QPO so he would have been a few months shy of his 19th Birthday. I was at that match and he scored 92.
Great story. I love reading these wonderful anecdotes. In many ways they remind me of the kind of similar stories the oldsters would recount of a young Gary Sobers growing up in Barbados. Wish such stories of our sports star could be collated into a book for future generations.

Yes mate I checked it out and it was 88,so you are right he was short of 19.
Brian was stil a Form VI student at Fatima when he made his FC debut in 1988 vs BIM a few months shy of his 19th birthday.
Casper, re the type of book you are talking about, I am working on one right now, it will entail interview with people such as Gary Sobers, Lara, Charlie Davis, Gus Logie and many other athletes from TT and others from the Caribbean cricket and other sports.
