The Ghanaians are now in on producing low-cost ventilators to fight COVID-19 too. Might we be witnessing the initiation of local solutions to local issues? Time will tell.

I see nuff Ghanaian floating up into the air filled with methane

No one. In Jamaica with a jig saw to shape the plywood nicely before presenting on National TV
Look like a jahjah cutlass carving during break at the farm

The ability for such achievements has always been there – that could well be a silver linings outgrowth of this tragedy the world is currently experiencing. Keep hope alive

Here is one for under $300 and will be be ready this week ....

Toronto student part of team building build cheap, 3D-printed ventilators

Dan_De_Lyan 2020-04-08 00:31:28

In reply to Kay

They are not telling you the true cost of 3d printing or did not include it.
I have a Markforge 3d printer at my desk and a stratasys Upright in the office.
You would have to invest 100s of thousands in tooling, moulds ets to produce at those cost.

A feel good story

bravos 2020-04-08 00:39:35

Good work and great intentions, but dey coulda rig it up a lil better though..

Remember the wheel is already invented and in use,no sense in rough carving one out of stone or wood if you serious ..its not a good look .

And this would apply to anyone not only Yardies...

JahJah 2020-04-08 00:49:29

Dey coulda do dis. Dey coulda do dot.

They managed to rigged something up.

There are many stages and phases of product development. this has a long way to go.
I see an automotive starter, non medical pneumatic hose an quick connect, computer power supply cables, 2x4, plywood.

Like, I said. a long way to go.

It's just a prototype, the aesthetics can be worked out later. The main thing is to make sure that it is fully functional.

Great work by the yardies.

bravos 2020-04-08 04:46:21

In reply to black

On an already decades old product ? It's like trying to reinvent the wheel from scratch with stone and wood..

Listen brother even if these guys were Trini the criticism would be the same..

How hard would it have been to rig it on some aluminium or plastic panels with industry standard components?

Listen bro as far as ventilators go there's nothing impressive about that prototype, seems like a very weak effort as far as ventilators go,or are we prepared to accept such mediocrity as Caribbean innovation and progress ?

Not me sir...I mean if someone can Mcgyver a ventilator out of some plyboard and low quality everyday components and save lives great in the circumstances, but if someone is looking to make a serious quality and marketable product under the great flag of Jamaica I say noo..

What a successful system would do is try to guide assist and nurture these ambitious gentlemen to a viable quality product, but the idea that such a ventilator is something groundbreaking is promoting mediocrity...

They should at least make a better presentation if they want to be taken seriously because in reality they have nothing new to offer, and when you're offering such you must come good..

I'm.sure there are Jamaican schoolboys who could come up with a better mockup than that, and had it been school children well 10 out of 10,but not dem two big hard back man,no sir..they obviously have many screws loose there,literally..

Calling this Jamaican innovation is saying Jamaica is mediocre,is it ?

bravos 2020-04-08 05:00:36

Had it been a time machine ,a flux capicitor or a cancer prancer looking like that well different story,we'd have no choice but to listen and learn..

But we've seen better ventilators for decades and even from kids' school projects..

black 2020-04-08 05:06:29

In reply to bravos

Listen, you are being too harsh, you have to understand that this is not what these guys specialize in and it was crudely constructed to help out in an emergency.

If this was a long term project that they spent months developing and came up with that, I would have been more critical.

Gteat job by the fellas.

Norm 2020-04-08 05:24:16

Nice! Those guys did a lot of local fabrication too! Some 3-d printing of face shields ("masks"), valves, etc. Simple technology, but operational.

Are the other Caribbean countries paying attention?

Norm 2020-04-08 05:27:33

In reply to bravos

How hard would it have been to rig it on some aluminium or plastic panels with industry standard components?

The fact remains that Yard is producing needed ventilators, but other English-speaking Caribbean countries are not (as far as we know).

It would be interesting to see how the Yard ventilators would perform in real life conditions. Nevertheless, this is very commendable, and daring.

The message I am trying to relate flies past the head top of the main characters.

Granger did say that, if you want me to post a link

If someone is looking for a design or design inspiration.
Grabcad dat com
Create an account and the downloads are free
You need some cad skills
Most common file type is solidworks
You can get a 3D printer for 300 on eBay
The need a mentor. Someone in Jamaica could help them
A trade school could take it on as community project

Drapsey 2020-04-08 12:54:24

In reply to Dan_De_Lyan

Not to speak of the Guyanese 'expatriates' who're so refined and skilled in modern techniques/technologies as cad and 3d printing, who choose to be messageboard viragoes instead of showcasing their skills at this opportune time, thereby leaving the primitive Jamaicans in the wake of their collective dust.

Barry 2020-04-08 12:57:17

I have no doubt, but therein lies the difference. Yardies very often show the most initiative among the English-speaking Caribbean.

black 2020-04-08 13:12:40

I agree.

Norm 2020-04-08 13:16:55

I'm willing to bet that if it weren't for the Granger (admin) ineptitude, Guyana and Guyanese would've been more creative even more 'refined'.

Guyana has had research facilities in place for decades, at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology (IAST), on the Demerara campus of the University of Guyana. IAST's performance over the years, however, has been very similar to GECOM (the Guyana Elections Commission) today.

Sorry to hear about your sister catching this virus, bro. Scary, but her chances to beat it should be very good.

Thanks.

She said the only symtom she experienced was loss of smell. I have no doubt that she will recover but I warned her to be very cautious around her family. She is isolating herself from the rest of family.

Norm 2020-04-08 13:35:58

In reply to black

loss of smell.

This seems to be a common symptom of this virus, along with loss of taste. Don't underestimate this virus's capacity to spring surprises. A lot of open love for your sister should help to keep her safe, I would think.

True, but she thinks she has had it for a few days now, in hindsight. Her condition is not getting worse.

Trade school in North America do have 3D printer
High school does

A manufacturing program ( I am on the board of advisor)
Design using solidworks
Manual machining... mills, lathe, surface grinder
CNC lathe, mills
CNC programming using Camworks and HSM
CNC router
Water jet cutting
Laser
That is the typical 1500hrs program.

I can post the curriculum

Jamaica is not there if that was allowed on tv. Two well dressed fellas with logo on their shirts presented that dogs breakfast. No leadership, mentoring and apprenticeship. At a basic level, they are too grown to think. Let’s show that?
No one wiped the grease off the starter.

I know ur angle is fuckry
