Branded A Rebel - Cricket's Forgotten Men
In reply to openning
I actually watched this recently......good docu. Beckles again was outtatimin saying they invest in players....rubbish. In retrospect, you csnt agree with what they did,at least i cant, but these guys were out of work after cricket. And the problem with WI being so strong must have bugged them too. Only one player from the first team went....croft. Rowe had been dropoed and so was kali....both apparently in contreversial fasion. Larry Gomes wad actually on the tarmac to go to SA in 1983, but decided that he could not let down the country. And 1984 ironicalky was the best year of his career, earning him a wisden cricketer of the year award. And Maco could have gone too. But Croft went and thst was his openning into a cinsistent WI spot...turned out to be a better than like trade. Desmond Haynes akso serioudly considered it and they worried he and maco and another guy would go, They were playing shield cricket in Australia but then they calked Alkan Rae and tokd him they were coming home

What about the pompous Michael Holding, was he not on his way until cold feet took over?
In reply to Toney
I never heard of holding being tempted. Holding grew up in a nationalist household. Manley lead the anti apartheid movement in theCaribbean and he wasa really good friend of holding, almost a father figure. He, Viv and Clive would probably have been the only persons unlikely to be seduced

True. Very true.

Holding wss particularly scathing in fact. But hea also like every other west indian understood that life was seriously precarious for any player outside of the actual world beating team. If you were close to selection, then probably you had a county contract, but otherwise there was nada. I guess thats why holding made sure to have some UWI papers under his belt in computer science just in case the cricket thing did not work out. I think every west indian pkayer should do that
