Best Balanced Attack We've Ever Presented?

Raggs 2020-04-20 19:31:09

Roberts/Holding/Croft/Garner were our best but what combo was our most balanced?

Raggs 2020-04-20 19:39:21

Let me start it then. Roberts/Holding/Boyce/Julen/Gibbs. At Perth 1975. We won that game.
Two opening right hand quicks. One left arm swing bowler. One right arm medium quick and an off spinner.

Priapus 2020-04-20 21:09:38

Any "attack" that featured Kerry Jeremy and Rawle Lewis had to be a balanced "attack".

Holding
Garner
Walsh
Marshall
Balance us overrated. Marshall was as destructive as any spinner in the sub continent

analyst-kid 2020-04-21 23:41:04

this attack is balanced

Holder
Roach
Alzarri
Cornwall
Chase

whether it can be successful is another thing.

Oilah 2020-04-22 01:15:51

Hall, Griffith, Sobers, Gibbs, Worrell

Worrell was effective enough to be called a frontline bowler at the time? Not a bad balance though.

I am not sure about the balanced attack but when West Indies played Marshall, Bishop (Pre-Injury), Ambrose and a raging Patrick Patterson were probably the most lethal attach that WI ever fielded. Walsh could not make the side and played as 12th man for awhile.

Worrell was 'effective' enough to have occasionally opened the bowling for the West Indies.

Don't think anyone would argue that Worrell was a front line bowler but he was a genuine bowler and he added 'balance' wink because he bowled left handed

Ok.sound talk.

Nah mon Roberts/Holding/Croft/Garner will never be matched as a quartet of fast men to attack the opposition.

Worrell open the bowling as lack of option.

navindesigns 2020-04-22 18:04:24

Edwards
Best
Collymore
Collins

all from barbados, very good attack and should have been alot more successful

Lance Gibb don't think much of Chase or Cornwall.
He said, you cannot bowl off of a few steps, and spin the ball.

Oilah 2020-04-22 18:15:10

For those who saw Worrell bowl was his style similar to Underwood? Quick but not fast enough to be considered medium pace and definitely not your 'flighting' spinner.

In 1980 in England, that attack was nullified
In 1981 in Australia it was effectively a 1 prong attack

Marshall
Holding
Garner

was unstoppable, and you could add

Walsh
Patterson
Harper

to further strengthen

Maybe someone should define a "balanced attack".

Raggs 2020-04-23 20:29:01

They seem not to grasp the true theory of it. Never mind.

Raggs 2020-04-23 20:32:47

As Clive Lloyld used to say. A mixture of all sorts. Off spin Leg spin Swing bowling Raw Pace Medium pace....

vs Marshall Bishop Ambrose Patterson

1. Marshall was the clear leader in this bowling attack ...the rest were learning. Ambrose hit his prime when Marshall left.

2.The first bowling quartet humbled Aus in Aus and that was a real tough Aussie side....not much can boast that...Roberts in his prime...Holding in his prime and a spiteful awkward young Croft and a towering young Garner...absolutely no respite...Patterson was actually at his most dangerous in this bowling attack:

Marshall Garner Walsh and Patterson...a now experienced Marshall and Garner and a young Walsh and a young dangerous Patterson

analyst-kid 2020-04-23 20:59:12

Roberts and Holding in my opinion were greater than Hall and Griffith. To me the greatest opening pair.

The fact that they had Croft and Garner as backups meant this was the greatest bowling attack WI ever produced.

Marshall/Holding (INDIA 1983) and Marshall/Garner were right up there too.

If we talking balanced attack then what about

Hall
Griffith
Stayers
Sobers
Gibbs

Who is stayers?

In reply to analyst-kid

When you think if the best balanced we ever had should incorporate Gary Sobers he alone could bowl at least 4 different disciplines.

analyst-kid 2020-04-23 21:32:09

In reply to Raggs

My bad...he played with Hall Sobers, Gibbs, Worrell but never with Griffith...it would have to be White.

Above was the first time in its history WI ever beat Aus in a test series in Aus....they won 2-0 in a three test series.

Roberts Holding Croft and Garner. ( a young Marshall was on this tour but he couldnt make the starting lineup)

in 1980 vs Eng in Eng n a series marred with nuff stoppages for rain,.....Garner stood tall over all with 26 wickets @ 14.26...with only Roberts assisting him well and a green Marshall still bowled better than a disappointing Croft and Holding.

in 1981 the four prong was in action again and doing well against Aus in Aus but Croft again wasnt doing well.
