HEADLINE: The cricket prodigy who chose Jehovah

THE Bible says it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

For a talented cricketer, a strict interpretation of the New Testament verse means forgoing millions of US dollars from lucrative Twenty20 tournaments around the world.

It’s been six years since Adrian Barath, now 30, turned his back on riches and glory to serve his God, as a devout Jehovah's Witness.

The stars had already aligned for Barath and the world was there for the taking. The attacking opener was already the youngest West Indies Test centurion (at 19), had the stamp of approval from Windies legend Brian Lara,  a US$75,000 Indian Premier League (IPL) contract under his belt and was driving a Range Rover– when he seemingly had an epiphany in 2014 and walked away from the game.

Interesting contrasts - Barath and Gayle.

Respect, Barath.

I respect both Gayle and Barath for the road they took. There was a time I was very critical of the former. No more.

To each his own. God Bless.

For a batsman to only get over some bad form compared with giving up the game shows the boy has no balls.Compare giving up to getting back in the team staring some good money in the IPL,CPL,Big Bash and the BPL,just a few stints and he set for life.Mek im go knock doors now and preach to people bout Jehovah.Adrian Barath, yuh take all that talent and throw into the Caroni River.

Its all about Faith. Faith in Jehovah God. Faith that this life is not all there is
and that if you play your cards right ( so to speak) in this life, that you will get everlasting life.

A person who has no faith in God, will not understand the decision that Barath made.
To that person, we have one life to live and so we should eat , drink , be merry and make money. Another person may believe in God but think that this belief and making money are not mutually exclusive. This person may reason that Barath could have a big platform , press conferences etc that he could use to preach the gospel.

The reality is that in the glitz, glamour and girls of international sport, it is almost impossible for one to truly follow God. There are too many temptations to do the things that are displeasing to Jehovah. As the scriptures say "You cant serve God and Mammon". Barath has chosen God and so I commend him for demonstrating and exercising Faith.

A poster here (I think it was RedBaron) called the Barath (cricket) demise early.

The call came when he saw Barath driving his brand new Range Rover, exhibiting the fact that he "has Arrived".

With nothing more (worldly) to achieve/accomplish, Jehovah's call was Barath's next level of gratification.

Former Red Force captain Rayad Emrit had a different version of the incident. He said Barath was carrying an injury and was cleared medically fit by the team doctor but was not match fit.

He said Barath was told he had to be around the team but would not start. “I thought he still had a lot to offer. He was one of the best young players in the region but he took too many shortcuts,” Emrit said.

Then there's this...

The pressures of big time cricket has burnt out many player. If he's happy good for him. Lot's of others achieve great riches and they're not.

Whatever he drives, he's driving at the end of his career.
