Gray: Ramdin still region’s top gloveman

FORMER West Indies fast bowler Tony Gray believes Denesh Ramdin’s ability behind the stumps is superior to all the other wicket-keepers in the Caribbean, saying the new Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) wicket-keeper may find it challenging to fill his shoes.

After spending four years at TKR, where he won two titles, Ramdin has signed to play with St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the upcoming 2020 Hero Caribbean Premier League. Ramdin, 35, was not one of the ten players retained or signed by TKR earlier this week.

Gray said Ramdin is the top gloveman locally with Steven Katwaroo and Joshua Da Silva among the other leading players. In the region, Gray also holds Guyanese Anthony Bramble and Barbadian Shane Dowrich in high regard. Among the top wicket-keeper batsmen are TT’s Nicholas Pooran and Barbadian Shai Hope, according to Gray.

Most fans have no idea how to evaluate wicketkeepers.Tony Gray is not saying anything that is surprising.Ramdin is judged by how many runs he makes because people do not know anything about wicketkeeping.

Gray seems to hold all the wicketkeepers in the region in high regards, because he seem to have named all that he could remember. Ramdin with all his experience should be the top wicketkeeper, but the Selectors are looking to the future. However IMO Hamilton is the second best in the region, but his inconsistent batting and age might work against him.

Adam Gilchrist, MS Dhoni and Kumar Sangakkara has set the modern standard for wicketkeeping.
Wicketkeepers are now consider to be an Allrounder, Tony Gray should check his calendar.

You are right sir...the best judgers for wicket-keepers are facing spin bowlers. For the past 10 years, I do not understand some of the foolishness about Ramdin as the top gloveman.
My "two cents," I took charge behind the stumps for two years after Dujon left high school. For one of them, we were still national schoolboy champions and I did not try to pursue cricket, except for "less professional" in College in Trinidad. Today, I still have a scar on my right eyebrow from a lousy cricket pitch in central Trinidad that jumped up from nowhere from a spin bowler (no face masks back for us in the late seventies). So I know a little bit about being wicket-keeper/batsman.

The # 1 gloveman in the Caribbean presently is the man behind the stumps for the Leeward Islands -Jamar Hamilton. His inconsistency in front of the stumps as a batsman in today's world of cricket keeps locking doors for him. He does not know how to play long innings very often. If only he would learn. Therefore, for the time being, Dowrich is untouchable (but, watch out for the young up and coming F/C gloveman from T & T)
Come on guys, Ramdin has shown more failures as wicket/keeper, batsman, and captain over the years. His arrogance as a young man was allowed to fester years ago and it has "bit him" more today.
