in the music industry?
We are seeing the passing of a lot of great singers who had great hits but very few achieved superstar status.
How did Aretha, Whitney, Beyonce, Rehanna, Marvin and Bob separate themselves from the pack?
In other words, how did all these greats become recognizable by just their first names?

How does one separate his/herself from the pack
In reply to black
Generally the public is drawn to the artiste because that's who they see on stage performing. Not much thought is given to the 'behind the scenes' people such as the writers, producers, session musicians. These backroom persons are just as important as the artiste themselves. One can have a great singing voice but without the right people to support him/her in terms of writing and producing music they wouldn't receive much recognition and accolades.
I would add stage presence to the mix. There are lots of artistes who sound great on a record. Put them on stage in front of a live audience and it's a totally different story. The likes of Marvin Gaye and MJ had stage presence.

How could I forget Mike?

Have you ever heard of Wendy Moten? At one point it was felt that she would have become just as great as Whitney. For some reason it just never panned out for her. She had a voice just as good as Whitney's.

So you have to be able to sing as well as perform?
Aretha and Whitney were not great performers.
In reply to Priapus
Was that the general consensus or just your opinion?
I thought Alecia Keys was going to become huge, she still is huge but not to the extent that I thought.
In reply to black
Consensus by those in the business more qualified than you and I. Do some research on her.

You also have to surround yourself with great songwriters and producers and you also have to do collaborations to become well known.

Did music ability and enjoyment evolve or did God create these sensitivities... Ive never understood how natural selection can predict a Mozart- maybe a Jay-zee- since he makes so much money

Wendy Moten is an EXCELLENT example of the point black is trying to make.
She had the talent, but for a long time in the 90s she just wanted to be a Whitney wannabe. Never once did she step out of the "Whitney shadow". Her biggest and ONLY hit easily could be mistaken for a clone out of the "Whitney Houston Clinic". Come in out of the rain is beautiful, but not distinctive.
The hallmark of "separation from the pack" is engineered in two ways:
1. singular or exceptional talent in the lane of others
2. to create your own lane, and dominate .
Few do one of the above, but those that have exceptional talent AND create their own lane become the immortals.

Whitney did an album with Teddy Pendergrass that launched her career by associating with someone that was well known and popular.

option 1

But, she decided long ago never to walk in anyone shadow!
In reply to StumpCam
Lol. Now, everyone is trying to walk in her shadow.

Michael Jackson or Prince?
Who was more talented?
In reply to black
Both were at one time Ayenmols religion- Prince died holding onto the dogma. MJ was excommunicated...

I see your trap. U know where I stand....
Prince. By a mile.
Michael was the world's greatest entertainer.
His stage performances, dance, singing is one of a kind. Extraordinary entertainer.
Ok, that said Prince never wanted to be in THAT lane....
Prince wrote every song. Played every instrument. Produced, composed and arranged 99% of his catalog, and still could dance and entertain.
Michael by contrast had a production behind him, always. Even R. Kelly wrote MJ songs. Where is Michael without Quincy Jones? If you think MJ could have had Thriller without Quincy, then the argument changes.
Prince Rogers Nelson need no one and no rules.
Look, our personal bias influences our thinking, but playing 21 instruments, writing for your own plus many bands (The Time was written and produced by Prince)
Talent to the nth degree is an artist that wrote, produced, composed and then performed all of his catalog.
But MJ was the the better entertainer.
In reply to pelon
I actually agree with that assessment, Mike entertainment was out of this world but Prince's writing and the story it tells, was one of a kind.
Both were super talented but Mike"s fans would probably disagree with your assessment.

When Doves cry, probably has the best beginning to a song, of all time.
