The data released Monday by Moderna is encouraging, but represents only a first step in a long process to bring a vaccine to market. It comes from an interim report on dozens of patients followed over weeks, whereas vaccine studies require broad testing in thousands of patients followed over many months or years.
Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the data looked promising and it made sense to proceed to a large trial this summer

The data comes from eight people who took part in a 45-subject safety trial that kicked off in March. The Moderna vaccine is one of more than 100 under development intended to protect against the novel coronavirus that has infected more than 4.7 million people globally and killed over 317,000.
Overall, the study showed the vaccine was safe and all study participants produced antibodies against the virus

Surprisingly, we found that 7 out of the 12 mAbs exhibited a strong RBD-binding affinity and a potent neutralizing ability against pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 (Figure 5B and 5C). The neutralization abilities of three representative mAbs, BD-503, BD-508, and BD-515, were also verified in the PRNT against authentic SARS-CoV-2 and showed high potencies (Figure 5E and 5F). Moreover, these mAbs were mostly encoded by VH3-66/JH6 or VH3-53/JH6 gene segments for the heavy chain, and VLK1-9 or VLK1D-33/39 for the light chain (Figure 5C)

Why would you root for a vaccine not to work? I know you hate Trump and I do to, but saving lives trumps (no pun intended) my dislike for him.

The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases has partnered with Moderna on this vaccine. Scientists at NIAID made the vaccine’s construct, or prototype, and the agency is running the Phase 1 trial.
Although the agency did not comment, the results remain- gives us hope
Of the 30 patients who received the two lowest doses, only one reported a side effect considered to be grade 3: redness around the injection site. Three people who got the highest dose, 250 mcg, developed grade 3 “systemic symptoms,” including fever, muscle pain and headache, Moderna Chief Medical Officer Tal Zaks, M.D., Ph.D., said on a call discussing the data. Although the side effects were temporary and went away on their own, Moderna won’t carry the highest dose into future trials.
Based on the data, the company will tweak its phase 2 study to test two dose levels, 50 mcg and 100 mcg, while the NIAID will test a 50-mcg dose in all three age groups. Moderna thinks the phase 3 dose will land somewhere between 25 mcg and 100 mcg.
