HEADLINE: Bravo, Paul, Hetmyer opt out of England tour

CaribbeanCricket.com Jun 3, 2020, 2:41:36 AM

Reports have emerged that the West Indies selectors have chosen a squad to play against England in a three-Test series in July. However, the squad will not include Darren Bravo, Keemo Paul or Shimron Hetmeyer who have all opted out of the three-Test match tour.

The squad is expected to depart from the Caribbean on June 8.

According to cricket commentator and talk show host Andrew Mason, the selectors had a hard time selecting a squad but in the end, came up with a squad that includes the recalled Jermaine Blackwood and Shannon Gabriel.

The names of the others who were selected include Captain Jason Holder, Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich, Roston Chase, Shemarh Brooks, Rahkeem Cornwall, Nkrumah Bonner, Alzarri Joseph, Chemar Holder, John Campbell, Raymon Reifer and Kemar Roach.

The West Indies will be in the United Kingdom for about four weeks and will be housed in a bio-secure environment while they get up to speed before the start of the first Test.

I can't say I blame Paul, Hetmyer and Bravo. The UK has the second highest coronavirus death toll in the world. Why risk it for half-pay?

Correct, this oaf of a Prime Minister caused all this trouble that's going on right now.I live on the borders of Hounslow and since January 2020 I would see loads of Chinese looking people coming off the trains from Heathrow Airport, not only that, they were wearing Masks.I use to think WTF,why the masks. As it turned out the people were running away from a Virus they knew about but we didn't,and when we did find out Boris Johnson kept the borders open for more East Asians and surrounding parts of the world.By the time we shut the borders it was taking over England who was by far the worst hit in the UK.

Will the WICB President, Skirrett, be accompanying them on the tour?

Oh no, not a single Indo-West Indian included.

Is this a first?

The borders were never closed fully

Only 3 weeks ago a plane load from India just poured off without questioning, tests or checks. Pick up luggage and go free.

Don't insult Guyanese.

Drapsey was just being mischievous, without malicious intent. I don't think anyone else noticed, or cared, that there wasn't any player of any particular ethnicity in the squad.

Bravo, Keemo and Hety are saving themselves for the IPL.

Will I am sure the Selectors did not go into their conference room with the intent of excluding Indo-Caribbeans, apart from Permaul which other Indo player deserves a call up. However, I will be surprise if Reifer is on that team, what has he done to merit selection. the left-arm seamer from the WWI, I think his name is Sweeney or Cotterel I think would be much better picks as they are more effective bowlers.

Hola....the war is still on and will be on for a little while...why send our youngsters to enemy country???This is just a play on words...lots of young men died in WW1 and WW2...
Those who refuse to go on tour I respect that....
massive fear of the virus..daily deaths and test cases...one does not need to be a hero..
Sports should be taking a back seat as really it contributes nothing presently to society...ALL SPORTS..I am saying present situation...when things get back to normal I will be the the first to buy a ticket to watch mud wrestling...until then let's just stay calm...put on the mask and do the salsa..

Note that WI is already losing Keemo and Hety to the IPL, etc. If they establish themselves in the IPL, they may never be interested in returning to WI or regional cricket, except for the CPL and T20 World Cup. Not much CWI could do about that, but cutting the lucrative pay of some of the top CWI staff might help to make the players more committed, because of regional pride.

Most of the other players might have done the same as this trio, if they had IPL contracts.

Why is it that because people are anonymous on a message board they feel they can say anything without a shred of evidence and impugn the character of others.
Both players have stated categorically that their first priority is to play for the West Indies. As a matter of fact they both said TEST CRICKET is their main goal.Keemo explicitly said so in the recent tear jerking interview.

They declined going on this tour, while the rest agreed to go. Is that what you consider to be "TEST CRICKET is their main goal"? They impugn their own characters.

Raymon Reifer? Really? What were his stats in this last regional domestic 4 day competition?

Interesting the comments on this thread too...

No Pooran?

Raymon Reifer deserves a shot. He always adds something to the team. He'll break a partnership, or play a needed innings with the bat. If Paul is not available, then he is a solid replacement.

Kyle Mayers should be there instead of Reifer and Bonner.

How many good seasons has Mayers had? Additionally he's not bowling as much.

imusic Jun 3, 2020, 11:52:26 AM

In reply to Larr Pullo

But what are his stats this past domestic FC season? That’s what I’m asking.

Isn’t that supposed to be a criteria for selection?

Maybe not, seeing Permaul cannot even make an 11 man reserve squad but somehow Warrican can.

imusic Jun 3, 2020, 11:59:49 AM

RESERVE PLAYERS

Sunil Ambris

Joshua Da Silva

Shannon Gabriel

Keon Harding

Kyle Mayers

Preston McSween

Marquino Mindley

Shane Moseley

Anderson Phillip

Oshane Thomas

Jomel Warrican

How do the selectors explain the omission of Verasammy Permaul in a list of reserve players? Permaul who took the most wickets by some distance in the last regional 4 day competition?

Yet they select Jomel Warrican, Anderson Phillip, & Marquino Mindley.

They’ve Devon Smithed & Nikita Millered Permaul.

That’s just wrong.

Maybe Permaul declined selection too and they declined to mention it

Robotic Warrican was part of the winning test against Afghanistan, that may be the reason he is selected ahead of Permaul.

He has experience, and when picked for senior duty in the past has performed creditably.

At least that’s consistent with Brooks’ pick. Forget how pathetic they performed in regional FC cricket. Anything resembling success in a single match, no matter how long ago, against whom, or where, ensures continued selection.

That plane load of Indians that landed 3 weeks ago were British Indians who got stuck in India, they were coming back after India lifted lockdown.
