HEADLINE: Kraigg Brathwaite called on Desmond Haynes in search of a return to elusive form

CaribbeanCricket.com 2020-06-18 05:48:46

Kraigg Brathwaite has not had a good time at the crease lately. In 2019, a score of 49 against the visiting English team in Antigua was his highest score for the year in what was a disastrous run as the West Indies Test opener.

It didn't get better. Scores of 14, 1, 10 and 3 against India and 11 and 8 against Afghanistan saw him end the year badly. That was when he called upon one of the best openers in West Indies history.

“I had some words with Desmond Haynes back in Barbados. Me and him always had a good relationship because he was team manager for the Barbados team when I first started, so I had some chats with him. He was obviously an opener as well and that's been very beneficial to me,” said Brathwaite who was addressing the media from the West Indies training base in Manchester on Wednesday.

Those words have proven largely to have been beneficial.

I wish the young man well. I agree with his critics that he has failed miserably of late but I also know that he is the foundation of our batting and the Piller on which we depend on to build a strong inning. Kraigg is a hard worker and knows how to fight, so I have every confidence that he will turn things around on this tour. I wish him and our team well because he is our only batsman on our team with more than five test centuries. So go ahead and prove everyone wrong again!

Devon Smith has no one to blame for his failure but himself. He always gets a lot of runs in our domestic competition but as soon as he is selected for test duties he fails. Devon was given 43 tests opportunities to cement his pick and what we got from him was 1760 runs at an average of 23.8. So what's your point?

Even with Kraigg failing his test average is still better than most OPENERS in the region.
Kraigg 33.29 8 tons First class 38.15
Devon Smith 23.78 1 ton. First Class 39.78
Kieran Powell 26.81 3 tons. First Class 31.01
I am glad he has spoken to Dessie, I has advocated for him to thank his management that supported him from youth, and get a experience professional team going forward

Here's the thing, since we don't have any god openers, you have to pick who is displaying form. None of the two that they picked have displayed anything remotely approaching form with the bat. We'll be 10 for 2 in most of the innings...

You must be insane to go to a dry well for water, knowing full well that it is empty.
I list two players that allyuh seek, having looked at Kraigg's average, he stays.

Look at his last innings at this level as a better indicator. Devon Smith would not have been retained with those string of scores, why keep Kraigg? Secondly Powell displayed form as an opener. Why isn't he there as a third opener? Campbell and Paint will not avg a partnership of 20 for the series.

Why isn't he there as a third opener?

As a Guyanese, you should see there a correlation with GCB election, Guyana general election, and not having a third opener.
COS is waiting, hoping and praying.

Isn't it remarkable that after protracted failure, spanning some 18 months, Brathwaite's test average is still 10 points higher than Devon Smith's? big grin big grin

That should explain why yet another test cap will not be wasted on Ol' Twinkle Toes - 40+ is enough!! big grin

Here's the only question that you should be answering. If Devon Smith had made those same scores in one of his stints, would he have been rightfully dropped? If the answer is yes, then ask your self why hasn't Paint been dropped?

jacksprat 2020-06-18 18:09:15

In reply to Larr Pullo

Here is the only answer: It is possible to concede that Brathwaite deserves to be dropped while also acknowledging that Devon Smith should never again be allowed anywhere near a West Indies team big grin

For what its worth, Brathwaite was once West Indies' premier batsman- heaven help us! - whose average has plummeted to 33+. Devon Smith wishes he could have raised his average to 30 big grin

Maybe that explains why the former is being given a longer run!

Brathwaite was once West Indies' premier batsman

In what alternate universe was this?

TheTrail 2020-06-18 18:43:24

Devon Smith:

Matches: 43

50s:......8

100:........1

Average:.....23.78

Brathwaite:

Matches: 43

50s:......15

100:........6

Average:.....37.29

Even if the selectors wrongly 'canned' Devin Smith for his poor performance at the top in 2018, he did not take advantage of the chances he received.

Batting with Brath against Bangladesh in 2018 Devon had another chance to cement his place in the team, and he failed. 2 and 16

Kraigg took advantage of it. He scored 110 and 8.

Two more openers that should be angry with the selectors are Kirk Edwards and Kieran Powell. They both have better averages than Devon Smith.

Larr Pullo 2020-06-18 18:52:32

In reply to TheTrail

6 innings and you didn't threaten 20 once as an opener, and you're still guaranteed a spot on the next tour.

ALL openers in the WI setup should be aggrieved!!!

Smith wishes he was guaranteed a spot, and wasn't batting for his place every single innings he has played at the test match level.

Paint was given a spot, BTW he earned it, but his performances have fallen off without the requisite scrutiny or course correction it deserves.

The alternate universe where Brathwaite was consistently being offered an A Grade at the same time where the CWI wanted to offer one such as Bravo a C Grade contract.

If you’re using CWI Retainer contracts as a measuring stick for excellence, I’ll remind you that Jomel Warrican has had a CWI retainer contract for the past 5 years

Sylobaby 2020-06-18 21:02:06

For all the critics of Kraigg Brathwaithe, let it be known that in as much as he is struggling he is still our key opening batsman in the region and, he is on course to even pass the great Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenedge in terms of stats. Haynes played 116 test and ended with 16 hundreds and an average of 43. Haynes never got a double. So far Kraigg has played 59 tests, with 8 hundreds, an average of 33 with one double. So check the facts before you guys type nonsense

A mate of mine said Smirh was going to do well in England had he been selected.

The same Dessie said during commentary this year that Smith's cricket has improved holistically and is among the fittest players in the region.

That says a lot.

Barbadians are not educated people. The majority can read and write which puts them into the category of a literate society.

Being literate does not mean a person can speak proper English.
