The six Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchises have selected their teams for the 2020 tournament which is scheduled to take place from 18 August to the 10 September. The draft was carried out remotely and the six teams have successfully filled out their rosters with both Caribbean and overseas players with Rashid Khan, Marcus Stoinis, Ross Taylor, Pravin Tambe and Carlos Brathwaite all being signed up.

Defending champions, the Barbados Tridents, have signed superstar Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan, powerful English opener Alex Hales and Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. Their other overseas players are Englishman Harry Gurney and Afghani Rahmanullah Gurbaz. They have retained the core of their championship-winning side from last year and they have signed Kyle Mayers to join a strong set of Caribbean players.

2020 has been a shit show for the vast majority of the planet. Turning out to be a bit of an exception for Joshua De Silva however

He had really good performances In the regional 4 day tournament resulting in being selected to the reserve squad for the WI Tour of England

He performed well for Emerging Players in the Regional 50 over tournament

And now selected by SKN Patriots for the 2020 CPL season

Lots of opportunities and rewards coming at him quickly. Up to him to capitalize on them.

Other youngsters to look out for in the CPL
Asmeade Nedd
Jayden Seales
Anderson Phillip

some of these draft selections are all over the place.

How can one team select some fella playing minor league cricket in the US because he was once in Pakistan U19 squad?

I can beat dat. A team drafted a 49 years old spinner from India with very ordinary stats in the few IPL matches he played. I am sure there is a youngster somewhere around in one of the islands who could eat dat food and develop at the same time...smile

As I look at the teams, especially the Windward team I didn't see the name of the young man from one of the small islands, who scored 100 in an u19 world cup game and later made the Windward team and West Indies B team. I think he is from Dominica because I remember hearing his testimony after hurricane Maria. Why is the young man not on the team? Is he sick with covid or was dropped? I don't know why he's not on the team but he sure looked like a bright prospect and it would be disgraceful if the Windward and West Indies didn't try to help develop this young chap who might not be older than 21. I hope they didn't treat him like they treated Archer and now they regretting. I just hope they didn't drop him because I didn't see him on the Windward team or any of the teams

Yeah I noticed that. Picking old guys because they were in the IPL many moons back... who are the player/talent evaluators for these franchises?

You torking bout Alick Athanaze? If so he has been trying to establish himself at the First Class and List A levels with mixed success. I wud give him another year there before trying to channel him into T20s, but dat is just me

Each team had to pick two WI emerging players and one ICC Americas player..

They should replace WI emerging crap that with a pool of U25 players from the region.. maybe 30-50 of the best U25 players in the region. Give the franchises more options to choose from.

As for the ICC Americas player.. ah really don't see the point of it, not like it helping CWI or CPL make any inroads in de American market.

I suspect it’s to help develop the game in the US By giving their players exposure at a higher level

it's not just about the US, but the *entire* Americas region. CWI have been encouraged to grow and find talent in the Americas region (of which there is several - hell Hayden Walsh, anyone? Or Ali Khan who's outperformed his contracts).

It's supposed to be not as much about getting viewership in the US (most US cricket lovers are more interested in players from Test nations, just like most WI cricket lovers rolleyes ) but about finding talent, getting exposure and experience and opportunity to guys not playing for Test nations. But the evaluators have been making odd choices.

That’s fair and I get it. ICC mandate is supposed to grow the game and this provides opportunities for players in the America’s (including Canada etc) to get exposure. I have no issue with that.

Perhaps CPL could do like NFL draft night and make it into a spectacle. Teams have players on their boards and the suspense of if the player(s) they really want are still available. What back room trades need to be made to make it happen etc.

Live streamed to people this providing marketing exposure and transparency. Might even attract sponsors.

Live broadcast would be fun... this year what with Covid probably not practical, but going forward it would be kind of cool. Some mini-profiles of potential draftees, some insight on what teams may be looking for to fill out their squad, all of that.
