1.30pm: England win the toss and bat

No surprise, there....

Rahkeem Cornwall misses out.

Norm 2020-07-08 12:33:01

Eng wins toss and will bat. Holder offers Stokes his hand (mistakenly) and Stokes almost takes it. Both men react with laughter!

No Cornwall. A big (no pun intended!) mistake, IMO.

Gabriel looking sharp in the warm-ups.

positiveg 2020-07-08 12:36:52

Hmmm
I would of played Cornwall
but let's hope we don't need too much spin
Anyway good team
Need to get some quick wickets

WI will regret leaving out Cornwall

Norm 2020-07-08 12:39:04

Good to see Blackwood and Brooks in. Tough on Da Silva.

I hope we don't regret leaving out Cornwall. Think he deserved a spot but I understand the concern about the batting. Hope it works out

camos 2020-07-08 12:45:44

In reply to spider If it raining the idea of not playing Cornwall would seem reasonable.

Norm 2020-07-08 12:47:01

In reply to spider

I understand the concern about the batting.

Adding the extra batsmen never helps in a weak batting lineup, but one of the pacers could have been left out for Cornwall.

WI will always go with a so-so pacer over a decent spinner when in doubt.

Cricket_101 2020-07-08 12:49:19

Cornwall looks like a NFL fullback big grin

Kay 2020-07-08 12:50:38

If the outfield is heavy then Cornwall sits .... fair decision

Norm 2020-07-08 12:51:01

Eng players wearing black armbands.

b4u8me2 2020-07-08 12:52:17

In reply to Norm

Even if Da Silver made two triple centuries in the warm ups he still could not play because he is not in the 15 man squad. He's a reserve.

camos 2020-07-08 12:53:42

In reply to b4u8me2

Is that a law?

Norm 2020-07-08 12:55:44

In reply to b4u8me2

He's a reserve.

So too was Gabriel.

The case for Da Silva may not be strong enough currently, because of his lack of experience at the highest level, but he has been making good use of his chances.

openning 2020-07-08 12:56:11

The COS telegraph this selection, even before the 25 squad was selected.
I am not surprise with Cornwall not in the X1.

mikesiva 2020-07-08 12:56:52

In reply to Norm

Black armbands for Everton Weekes, I think....

Narper 2020-07-08 12:56:59

Stokes:
Going to have a bat. Trying to get the best conditions out of it. Overhead conditions didn't change our perception. Looks dry on top. Won't have too much pace in it. Recently spin's come into it. Tough decision with Broad and Woakes. But we feel that we can have an extra dimension with the pace of Wood and Archer. To be fair, he wished me very well on my big day. Very proud but my main focus is to get the win. Three lions on the chest, walking out to play for your country, no bgiger motivation.

b4u8me2 2020-07-08 12:57:13

The WI best chance of beating Eng is to bowl them out cheaply. We will not out bat them but we can out bowl them. I'm surprised that we have gone an extra batsman instead of Cornwall so that we can always apply pressure on their batsmen. It goes to show that Holder is not confident in his batting at the moment and is playing mainly as a bowler. He talks up being the number 1 all-rounder but he doesn't play the dual role that Stokes play. Stokes actually gives Eng the option of playing 4 bowlers plus him. Holder must play a similar role.

Norm 2020-07-08 12:57:17

Teams take the field to be presented to each other. No, to remember those lost to the infernal virus. Or, is it Weekes only?

Narper 2020-07-08 12:57:23

Holder:
Not too disheartened with bowling first. Will look to make use of these conditions. We've got four quicks. Got Chase as a spin bowling option. Discipline's the name of the game. Been little strange. Haven't been able to move out of the hotel. It is what it is. Preparation's been good. Some days we had rain. It's a cause we're both pushing - to have the Black Lives Matter emblem on the collar.

Runs 2020-07-08 12:58:08

Wow is this game being played in the Caribbean, there are absolutely no spectators

spider 2020-07-08 12:58:23

In reply to Kay

Please explain the heavy outfield bit. I heard the pitch itself is dry and the venue is not usually unfriendly to spin. Plus England, despite a very good pace attack, is playing a spinner

Norm 2020-07-08 13:02:12

Everyone, players and non-players all, on one knee simultaneously. A beautiful gesture for social justice.

camos 2020-07-08 13:02:17

The umpires, Richards Kettleborough and Illingworth

they stopped using neutral umpires at both ends?

Narper 2020-07-08 13:03:45

Rory Burns and Sibley are at the crease.

Rory Burns is on strike.

Roach will open the attack

sgtdjones 2020-07-08 13:05:33

1.30pm: England win the toss and bat, Ben Stokes is beaming - and only partly because Jason Holder tried to meet his fist bump with a handshake. "Reasons being we're going to try and get the best out of it," he says. "Not going to have too much pace in it and in recent times spins come into it." No Stuart Broad or Chris Woakes, as expected. "Very tough [conversation], but Stuart took it as an absolute champion." That ends a run of 51 consecutive home Test appearances for Broad; Jofra Archer and Mark Wood take their places in a Test XI together for the first time. Holder, meanwhile, says he's "not too disappointed to be bowling first". Four quicks plus Roston Chase is the order of the day, and they'll enjoy these overhead conditions, with the skies still filled in. Rahkeem Cornwall misses out.

Norm 2020-07-08 13:05:46

Wasted review. Why? That was a bad call by Holder.

sgtdjones 2020-07-08 13:05:58

1.53pm: The umpires, Richards Kettleborough and Illingworth, are hovering by the pitch, the West Indies players nearby. Rory Burns is sitting in contemplation at the foot of some stairs, "Jerusalem" beginning to swell on the PA. There'll be a minute's silence for victims of the pandemic, and Sir Everton Weekes. And then, by ecky thump, we might just have some cricket...!

sgtdjones 2020-07-08 13:06:36

Roach to Burns, no run
No stroke from Burns, that's flicked the pad on the way through, a very tight leave... and West Indies choose to review in the first over
no stroke from Burns, that's flicked the pad on the way through, a very tight leave... and West Indies choose to review in the first over! Was it coming back enough? Hit him outside the line, but he wasn't playing a shot

. umpire's call on impact! So no dice, although West Indies will keep their three reviews

b4u8me2 2020-07-08 13:06:40

In reply to Norm

Gabriel was always going to be part of the 15 he just had to prove his fitness. If he didn't prove his fitness then the 15th place would have gone to a bowler. Gabriel has been confirmed in the 15 so the 25 man squad is settled. Da Silva is not in that 25 man squad therefore he cannot be selected. Simple as that.

Gabriel to Sibley, out Bowled!! Now this goes the other way and knocks the top of off stump. That previous ball clearly in his mind, Sibley tries to leave this one as it lands on a similar length outside off. However, to his horror, it veers in as opposed to moving away, Having already shouldered arms, there's no recourse for Sibley. Early strike for the West Indies.

100-2, maybe. Alzari is getting the ball to swing nicely away from the right hander, but the field will have to hold on to catches.

Holder looking not too bad, considering he hasn't bowled much in the practice games, but he doesn't look convincing - yet. Another bowler would have helped here.

It's very overcast. Now's the time for the West Indies pacers to use the seaming conditions to make inroads. If they don't do it now, then we'll be on the backfoot for the rest of the match....

Gabriel strikes again! Denly bowled for 18...England 48-2.

Bowled by Gabriel!!!

Another one that whips back in sharply - at 90 mph!

Norm 2020-07-09 10:29:11

Eng top order relatively new and without spectacular batting averages. Nevertheless, they seem to be batting with a plan - wear down the WI pace attack.

48-2 is not spectacular, but it is not too bad either. This is pointing to a score of about 250.

Gets a second wicket with off cutter just like the first.

The ball swung in in the second, then seamed a bit more. The ball is swinging, so Alzari should bowl at the other end.

Norm 2020-07-09 10:37:13

Crawley leaving deliveries from Roach that are seaming back in dangerously close to his off stump!

What an amazing statistic - only six bowlers in history have more bowled dismissals than Gabriel.

Ewart 2020-07-09 11:11:07

Holder's approach in attacking Ben Stokes is the right one.

He is bowling just back of a length and moving the rising ball away looking for a catch to the wk or slips cordon. It will work when he gets the right pace.

clokey 2020-07-09 12:20:03

Reviews are all well and good and Jason uses them better than just about any other captain in world cricket, but the umpire’s decision is still huge, given the ‘umpire’s call’ rule.

Luckily both shouts were smashing the stumps - I doubt the Windies will be as lucky.

That was a brilliant session - batting is going to get a LOT easier over the next two days in the sun. Another big session, get these guys out under 220 and we’re in with a big chance.

Nice Holder interview.

He bowled quite well, and well within himself - beautiful outswingers, with the occasional off cutter as a surprise weapon. Good to see he supported the bowlers with the reviews, and things went WI way. Restricting Eng to 200 or so is commendable any time.

Noticed that none of WI 4 part-time spinners were used, which might emphasize their decision not to include Cornwall, I think our bowlers did very well, wasn’t it for the drop catches, we might have bowled out England for under 150 runs. I my pre-match report, I predicted that fielding would be important and drop catches could hurt WI.

How can all marginals go against one team?

I am also a "WIForever" but I am baffled at your logic.

Sure I wanted KB to score a century but the ball did not go on to hit the stumps because his pads stopped it from doing so.

This is cricket and this nonsense about marginal gets to me. It does not matter if the ball is hitting the top or side. If the ball is pitched between wicket and wicket and is shown to be hitting the stumps, in my book that is out. I don't care if you are WI, Englishman or Australian.

This foolishness about umpires call is one of the follies of modern day cricket. I will agree it can lead to a disadvantage since one guy can be given out and another guy not out with the exact same circumstances.

There is no logic or common sense in the umpires call rule.

Ewart 2020-07-10 12:41:09

Chase nearly pulled a ball on to his stumps by playing with a 45 angled bat because he did ot get anywhere near the ball.

Norm 2020-07-10 13:06:35

Anderson tries a bouncer on or about off stump and Brooks whips himself out of the way. Follows up with a fuller length. Played comfortably by Brooks.

Indeed - I’m just not used to FC experience in the caribbean counting for much!

Really pleased to see him do ok so far - looks like a solid depth batsmen for another 3-4 years. The kind that can make Hetmyer, Pooran, Bravo etc really work to earn their spots back.

clokey 2020-07-10 13:09:11

Easier said than done, but Chase has to use his feet and disrupt Bess’ line. Every ball is a replay and he’s in trouble here if he doesn’t rotate.

Norm 2020-07-10 13:09:29

Chase needs to get away from Bess or he will go caught & bowled, or caught close in on the leg side.

Anderson again. Finds the edge? Review that, Brooks! Review taken. Slightest of spikes and he's gone!

The ball was on an off stump line, just short of a good length. It moved away slightly with Brooks playing a high defense away from his body.

55.2
Anderson to Shamarh Brooks, out Caught by Buttler! He's been given out by the umpire, and he's going for the review. West Indies have done well with the reviews, but will this be another one overturned? There's a blip on UltraEdge, and West Indies lose this review. Now, to the ball: a back of a length ball that's straightened off the seam within the corridor, lured Shamarh Brooks into the flirt as it takes the faintest of nicks through to Buttler. The umpire raises the finger, and Brooks holds up the T again - and the men in the hats heave a sigh of relief after breaking a rather uncomfortably conspicuous trend in this Test match.

Blackwood is a bit nervous here, alright.

Norm 2020-07-10 13:42:46

Bess again. Long hop(!) swung to the square leg boundary by Dowrich for 2. Full on middle. Dowrich takes a step down and swings it hard to long leg. Almost six. Punches Bess airily past long off for 4 more!

Jermaine, I hope you're watching how Dowrich hits the ball in the air...minimise the risk involved.

Norm 2020-07-10 13:45:54

Am not sure if Dowrich should be attacking so quickly.

Archer again. 83 mph. 86 mph. 86 mph and Chase pops it up to gully. No one there!

Norm 2020-07-10 13:49:07

196-5.

Let's see how Dowrich plays the next over. Stokes brings himself on.

Dowrich looking quite good and enterprising, but this is a critical period. A wicket or two and WI may wind up with just about 250.

WI 198-5.

Dreama 2020-07-10 13:54:53

Haven't watched cricket for more than two years, the only noticeable change is Covid. These umpires need black lives matter printed on their backs, pure guesswork with benefit of doubt going to the white team.

WIForever 2020-07-10 13:56:41

WIForever 2020-07-10 13:58:12

Aren’t we tired of junk like Blackwood?

Pick boring batsmen for test matches please.

Norm 2020-07-10 13:59:26

Archer all over the place now. Short ball takes a ducking Chase on the back and runs away past long leg for 4 leg byes!

202-5. 200 up.

Norm 2020-07-10 14:01:27

Stokes again. A series of short balls to the patient Chase, who has 16 off 69 balls. Chase is doing a great job here, holding the middle order together.

204-5. Scores level.

Bad umpiring which feels skewed like the last two days isn’t a racist problem, it’s a long-running issue where umpires have a bias towards higher-ranking teams and players.

It’s the same as the NBA when guys like Lebron, Steph and co get calls and treatment no other players do.

Consciously or not, the umpires are in on the theatre.

Norm 2020-07-10 14:48:36

A bit of discussion about who should bowl. Wood continues.

Dreama 2020-07-10 14:51:01

In reply to Norm

By conditioning, not just the umpires but the commentators as well, and not just cricket
but every sport. I gave up cricket for Formula 1, when NBC had the contract I had to watch
with the volume off. Lewis Hamilton has a jet setting lifestyle if he didn't make pole it
was because he was in Paris two days before the race, when he overtake Vettel and won the
race you can here a pin drop. If he sneeze on another driver's car he get a penalty. A black
man must be twice as good to get half the respect. No better example than Donald Trump.

Without reviews England would still be bating and WI would be out. Your argument would hold water
if when the WI team was all conquering they were given the benefit of the doubt. Google Holding
kicking down the stumps in New Zealand. Google Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc tassel, then
do the same for Lewis Hamilton and Alex Albon. Only Hamilton got a penalty on both occasions.

No person could deny that sports history is littered with racism. Especially the Windies, who were vilified and tainted as villains when their pace but batsmen on their asses around the world. I know the story of the Kiwi series well.

But I don’t see racism out there today - not wasting any emotional energy trying to argue something i have zero evidence for, other than human error.

Still a lot of cricket left - hopefully they can finally even that ledger wink

He was not quite himself in the first innings. No swing from him, but Alzari was getting good shape, and plenty of pace.

Three overs each from Roach and Holder, four each to Gabriel and Alzari, is my formula!

Norm 2020-07-10 17:19:21

Roach again. Back to the off stump channel. Strays to leg and Burns plays at it. Goes thru to Dowrich and a half-hearted appeal goes up. Not out.

6-0 in 3 overs.

Norm 2020-07-10 17:33:51

Gabriel continues, to Sibley. Off stump channel too. The 3rd one cuts back sharply and nearly bowls Sibley!

7-0 off 4 overs. Another on-target over from Gabriel, finding or beating the edge more often than not.

Norm 2020-07-10 17:39:08

Another over to Roach. A mistake in my opinion, but ...

Roach beats the edge of Sibley's defensive prod with one that goes away. And again.

Thru Sibley, but barely misses the edge!

15-0 in 10 overs.

Norm 2020-07-10 18:07:12

Holder screwed up in that last session. Why bowl Roach for 5 overs, or even at all, when he was obviously not at his best?

For the second time in the match he ignores Alzari, having under-bowled him in the first innings.

There are things that Holder the captain needs to fix, such as a serious predisposition to involving his countrymen in preference to other West Indian players, and to the detriment of the WI advantage overall.

Not taking a wicket tonight makes a draw, or even an Eng win, more likely. With 2 days to go, Eng could set WI 200+ to get on Day 5, or survive the day. Neither task will be easy.

Holder went with what he thought was best for this evening. It didn’t come off but was just 11 overs. Sure all 3 results are possible but as a leader he is going in the right direction.

Worst possible start this morning. Need atleast 3 wickets before they fly past the deficit.

Thats what your caveage dominance had to do with. In reality your caveage dominance was all about luck. Now you need this in this era where SKILLS, TALENT and FORTE are dominating. So better luck with it, your luck ran out when every country started to produce hardworking SKILLFUL, TALENTED cricketers.

Nasty, inconsistent bounce off the pitch from a delivery from Holder, and the ball hits Burns on the elbow.

Gabriel to Sibley, no ball, BOWLED! He's played that on, just trying to prod defensively at a back of a length ball outside off. But has Gabriel overstepped? Yes he has! Nothing behind the line, and Sibley heaves a sigh of relief. They finally had the luck, but the darned DRS had to mess with them. Again. West Indies clearly no impressed with the call...

51.3
Gabriel to Sibley, out Caught by Dowrich! After a reprieve, he's found the most tame way to be dismissed. A stray one down leg-side, a manifestation of Gabriel's frustration, and Sibley has just tickled that through to the 'keeper. He will be disappointed.

A specialist spinner at the expense of a fast bowler? Or a specialist batter?

Absent Narine, I don't have the confidence in our spinners against international batters. I like the team with Chase as the spinner. Take Permaul, got lot of regional wickets, but such a massive failure in the international scene.

I will however be willing to bring in Cornwall in place of Blacks, I think it would be a bold pick and Rakheem can hold his own with the bat.

I will keep a 4 prong pace attack.

Holder to Stokes, FOUR, he's taken his time but is finally off the mark. Holder slightly errs on the fuller side and Stokes presents a nice straight bat on the on-drive, creams it straight of mid-on and the timing takes care of the rest

230-3 in 85 overs. Partnership 79.

Norm 2020-07-11 16:27:23

Playing the extra batsman, WI may have come into the game hoping for no more than a draw. Consequently, they seem to be quickly losing the unexpected advantage they had at the start of play today.

Norm 2020-07-11 16:28:50

238-3 in 86 overs. Lead 124. 90 min of play left today.

Roach continues. 81 mph on leg to Stokes, who swivels and hits it to leg gully for 2 more.

Check drives one on off, past long on for 4 more!

244-3 in 87 overs. Roach's supposed reputation for dismissing left-handers is sorely needed now.

Norm 2020-07-11 16:34:19

Holder takes over from Gabriel. 74, 76, 77, 77 mph.

Alzarri Joseph to Zak Crawley, out Caught&Bowled!! West Indies are back in it. Both set batsmen sent back in consecutive overs. Joseph picks up his first wicket in the game. Crawley is disappointed as he throws his head back before walking off. Once again it was angled in at the stumps, Crawley closes the bat face and the leading edge pops right back,

Buttler out. Reviewed!

Narper 2020-07-11 17:05:02

LBW...review time

NOT OUT...over and missing leg

93.1
Holder to Buttler, no run, Buttler given out LBW, but he reviews fairly quickly. I doubt he's got bat on it. Ultra-Edge confirms he hasn't. But this is bouncing over the top of leg stump. Another decision overturned in this Test. A good length ball from Holder that clipped Buttler on the flap of his pad as he played across the line of it. Fair indication there that it could've been high, although the umpire didn't see it that way

Norm 2020-07-11 17:05:19

Going down leg indeed. Not out.

265-5 in 94 overs. Lead 151.

Norm 2020-07-11 17:09:31

Alzari again. 85 mph.

Butler bowled middle stump off the inside edge, by a slower off cutter on off stump!!!! Plenty of inswing too.

265-6 in 94.2 overs. Really interesting now, with Eng in SERIOUS trouble!

Narper 2020-07-11 17:12:51

94.2
Alzarri Joseph to Buttler, out Bowled!! The middle stump goes flying off the inside edge. What a great spell of play this is for the West Indies. It's brought this Test to life. Full ball just outside off, gets Buttler driving and then gets just a little bit of movement to cause the error.

Buttler b Alzarri Joseph 9(13) [4s-2]

Norm 2020-07-11 17:14:05

Bess in. Rapped on the pad first ball! Seems like it took the bat first. No, it did not, but was a bit high. One review left, and not risked here.

Review shows that it was high.

267-6 in 96 overs. Lead 153.

Norm 2020-07-11 17:20:53

Alzari again.

87 mph almost yorks Bess on leg stump. Goes thru him in the off stump channel.

Edged between 1st slip and keeper and DROPPED by Dowrich! Closer to Dowrich.

Rapped and reviewed. Seems a bad review. Going down leg again.

Narper 2020-07-11 17:23:09

DROPPED !!!!!!!!!!!! by de Dow
96.4
Alzarri Joseph to Dom Bess, no run, dropped by Dowrich! Went one-handed to his right but it didn't stick. Back of a length around off, straightened a touch for the edge which carried behind.

Narper 2020-07-11 17:24:00

Next ball....review for LBW...not out given

NOT OUT.....just kissing leg stump

Norm 2020-07-11 17:30:23

Joseph continues, with a 1st slip and 3rd slip, point and backward point. Big gap in the slips and gully for a bowler of Joseph's pace, with a fairly new ball.

In the off stump channel. Pope swishes foolishly, but misses. Admonishes himself. A 79 mph yorker kept out somewhat awkwardly.

Gabriel to Ollie Pope, out Bowled!! The procession continues for England who are collapsing dramatically at the end of day four. And this is Pope, their last recognised batsman. He fails to handle the extra bounce from Gabriel as it cuts in and deflects off his arm into off stump

Ollie Pope b Gabriel 12(30) [4s-1]

Roach continues. He is not the right guy here, at this time. Batsman just leaving the deliveries in the channel, and blocking the few on the stumps.

Morning, Mike.

Alzari it is. Batsmen throwing their bats at everything already. Speed gun not being used as yet.

268-8 in 105 overs. Lead 172.

Norm 2020-07-12 10:04:37

Gabriel from the other end. Also starts on leg. Turned behind square for a single.

Three slips, a gully and a man at backward point. Ah, there's speed gun. 83, 89 mph.

289-9 in 106 overs. Lead 175.

Norm 2020-07-12 10:10:10

Alzari again, with the same field as Gabriel.

88 mph delivery edged thru the air about 5 feet away from the gully fielder, who dives but cannot get a hand to it. Runs down to 3rd man for 4!

293-8 in 107 overs. Lead 179.

Norm 2020-07-12 10:14:43

Gabriel again.

Very wide down leg. Beats the keeper and runs down to fine leg for 4!
Bouncer smacks Wood on the shoulder and he grunts in pain. Another bouncer takes Wood on the elbow now. He is not enjoying this! Another one goes down leg again. Ump misses the front foot no-ball.

297-8 in 108 overs. Lead 183.

Holder doesn't seem to have a lot of confidence in Alzarri

Even after Alzari had Archer edging just past gully's hands! A 2-over spell was good enough for Alzari, it seems. Phil probably asked Holder why Alzari wasn't used more yesterday.

Holder continues with Gabriel, despite a very wayward last over.

Norm 2020-07-12 10:58:31

Anderson again, to Paint. Anderson right on target, on the stumps, forcing Paint to play everything. Last ball of the over goes wide down leg.

2-0 in 3 overs.

Norm 2020-07-12 11:01:34

Archer again. Campbell turns him off the pads to fine leg for a single. Paint turns one on leg nicely to square and gets 3, to open his account.

6-0 in 4 overs. Campbell calls for a drink.

Norm 2020-07-12 11:06:50

That rap on the leg from Archer is causing Campbell some pain now, and the physio is out in the middle looking at it.

Bess again. Three men close in on the leg side, in front the bat. Plenty of turn in the rough and Chase is rapped on the pads, playing a defensive shot.

Review. Not out.

Bess causing some problems for Chase.

ENG review for LBW

Not out...just hitting top....Ump decision
14.3
Dom Bess to Roston Chase, no run, really good appeal. Flighted delivery sharply turning after taking the top surface on impact
Appeal for LBW, England review. Is it too high? Impact/inside no problem. Will it be umpire's call? Yes it will be! Chase escapes.

Norm 2020-07-12 12:00:35

Ball pitched outside off and batsman played a shot. Cannot be lbw.

Chase skillfully turns one from from outside off and turning in, to mid wicket for 2 more.

35-3 in 15 overs, and that's LUNCH!

Eng right on top. If this match lasts beyond TEA, it will be interesting.

shivnotout 2020-07-12 12:07:10

In reply to Norm

Umpire Richard Kettleborough thought long but said no. England reviewed and when they saw almost half the ball hitting the top of middle and off, they threw their heads back. That was a close shave for Chase
lol

Norm 2020-07-12 12:14:00

In reply to shivnotout

OK. Chase ws struck in between wicket and wicket. So, the lbw was possible.

WIForever 2020-07-12 12:20:55

This real hard to watch after putting in all the effort to build hopes up to winning this. West Indies never seizes to raise the blood pressure.

Norm 2020-07-12 12:27:46

In reply to WIForever

The bowlers put in a very good effort, but the top order was blown away by Archer and Wood. It is now up to the middle and lower order to win it for WI.

New blood is needed in the top order. It is true that Lil B and Hety are not here, but even then insularity would have conspired against WI. Perhaps young Da Silva might be given more favorable consideration now.

clokey 2020-07-12 12:32:43

Bit heart-breaking after waiting so long and having the edge for most of the game.

I’m hoping there’s still one more twist to this game, but my gut says this could all be over before tea.

If there was ever a time for Blackwood to cow-lash a 50, it’s now.

In reply to Norm

How are they racist?

It is not just the umpires racist the English team is as well. Look at the few minutes play day 3
just before the Tea break, the Brits knew they were getting the benefit of the marginal calls, they
displayed a ferocious appeal for LBW clearly going pass leg.

The umpire started to raise his hand then changed his mind, while the unethical Brits refused to go for the review. Reminiscent of Karen in Central Park. Incompetence would not dictate the majority of marginal calls going against West Indies, with decisive out calls not given. At some point human bias kicks in, as Whoopi Goldberg said you cannot discuss race with some people, they only see what the want to see. Today you will see clear bias as England will resist being embarrass by WI in their backyard.

Now I must go watch Formula 1 and call out an ass kissing, subservient, quota pick Indian commentator
who couldn't make it out of Formula 2, but always want to degrade a six time world champion and elevate Max Verstappen, who hasn't won a single championship.

Stokes to Blackwood, leg byes, 1 run, "catch" shouted Stokes but umpire Richard Kettleborough signals a leg bye. Short angled at the body, Blackwood is on one leg to play the pull, misses and the ball deflects off the thigh pad to the left of Buttler. He dives across and doesn't gather it cleanly. UltraEdge shows a spike as the ball passes the glove. So definitely a chance

Narper 2020-07-12 13:32:05

Spun in from a length, Dowrich was drawn forward and got beaten on the inside edge as he tried to drive against the spin. Clearly no bat. Impact - umpire's call - marginally outside off. WI 145/4 (46.0) CRR: 3.15

West Indies need 55 runs

Norm 2020-07-12 15:21:25

Wood to bowl. Two slips and a man at short leg.

clokey 2020-07-12 15:22:10

Not sure what the rule is, but Wood just clearly put his saliva on the ball.

Who brings that to umpire attention? Isn’t it a 5-run penalty?

Norm 2020-07-12 15:25:07

Inside edge just misses the off stump and runs down to fine leg for 2 more.

147-4 in 47 overs.

Archer again. Blackwood seems a bit subdued now.

147-4 in 48 overs.

Norm 2020-07-12 15:28:36

Wood, to Dowrich. Two slips in place. Dowrich pushes to the vacant point area for an easy single. Field spread deep.

Blackwood struck on the back leg and a half-hearted appeal goes up. "Not out", says the ump. Reviewed!!! Not out still.

Narper 2020-07-12 15:31:56

Mark Wood to Blackwood, no run, they are pondering a review. Stokes goes for it. It's a bit of an outrageous shot from Blackwood this, looking to hoick this through midwicket. He's beaten for pace - with this delivery around 92mph - [b]and is smashed on his back leg, but the ball is headed down leg comfortably

Jofra Archer to Blackwood, FOUR, this should settle him down nicely. Slightly fuller outside off, although by no means a proper half-volley. But it's enough for Blackwood who leans into it and drives through extra cover

Another 50 partnership involving Blackwood.

Wood bowling.

Inside edge and Blackwood isn't sure where the ball went. Scampers another single!

Mark Wood to Blackwood, FOUR, remarkable shot from Blackwood. He's slammed this full ball over mid-off. Didn't get much height on it, so Anderson thought he was in play, but couldn't get a hand

Stokes to Dowrich, no ball, Dowrich is caught off a no-ball. Stokes didn't celebrate as he knew he was probably over the line, and so it proved when it was sent upstairs. Good length just outside off, holds its line a touch after getting him forward and takes the edge to slip. But alas!

Stokes to Blackwood, out Caught by Anderson! He's lost it! He's lost his cool. This has been a terrific innings, but he's given it away! Stokes it is, to get the breakthrough, but has it come a little too late? A half-volley, and he's just chipped it straight to Anderson at mid-off. NOT much of a celebration, because they realize it's a little late. He would've walked out to a standing ovation, Blackwood. Terrific innings.

Rally on the West Indies! Fist bumps and forearm bumps and quiet stadiums - but a famous win, nonetheless. It's been a long, long break for international cricket but what a glorious return it has been. So many sub-plots to this as well, but lest we forget - this is a WTC match. And these are West Indies' first points on the board - 40 of them. For England, another series begins with a series loss - that's now five series in a row. Including the one they lost to West Indies away last year. It's always been more evenly matched between these two teams than is given credit for. England had to work hard to stay in this game, and in many moments seemed to have done just enough. But they let some chances go today. And West Indies held on. So much to remember about this game - Holder's 6-for, Stokes keeping England in with both bat and ball. Scrappy, important runs for Brathwaite who was been hunting for a fifty since July 2018. Important innings for youngsters Sibley and Crawley. Gabriel turning it on in the last session yesterday and finishing with five today. And, of course, Jofra bringing the fire to keep all the criticism in check. Cricket is back with force. Savour it.

Sarah: "What a game!! I honestly got goosebumps watching those last few runs... I think Jason holder can be a contender for man of the match though... excellent bowling and superb captaincy. Full team performance . Very proud of them "

corniel seddon: "What a display from the West Indian team!!! Really pleased for them as a slighty biased neutral from South Africa. A well deserved win!!!!"

Absolutly superb victory, our bowlers bowled better than England as a team, our batting was better especially the running between the wickets and most of all we were twice as good in the field.
Windies are on the rise, make no mistake about it. The talent is there as we always knee we just need for everyone to get behind the boys.

What a Test, what a sport... and that's set up the series beautifully. Right, here we go with the presentations, starting with England captain Ben Stokes:

"I think it's great we've been able to get back on and play international cricket, was a bit strange, we're used to playing in front of a lot more people. From the point of getting cricket back on the screens for people it's been amazing.

[Quality of play] Both sides have had a long time to build up, we came into camp 3-4 weeks ago and West Indies have been in Manchester. Don't think there was nerves flying around, it was a hard-fought game and great when games go to day five. Thought skills and level of cricket was fantastic.

[Target of 200 enough?] You've got to believe, if you start to think you don't have enough you're already losing. Ideally would like to get more in the first innings, was first innings v fourth innings match, we got ourselves in good positions with the bat but weren't ruthless enough to go on.

[Change toss call?] I don't think so, stand by decision to bat first, we've got to be good enough to put runs on board We know we've got to get 400, 500 on the board, which makes the fame in your favour. We just didn't quit manage to grasp the game like we might ave done, but it's a great learning curve for or batting line-up.
[Broad call?] If I was to regret that, I don't think it sends the right message to other guys, very fortunate to leave a guy out of Stuart's quality, and the interview he gave was fantastic, to show that desire and emotion, it's fantastic to see. He's by nowhere near done.

[Mad 15 mins] Pressure shows in different ways, there was some hectic running and chances we didn't quit take, that's sport. Pressure on both sides in situations like that. We'll be able to look back on this game with positive but also a learning curve. We've had a long build-up period, but you can never quit e get to those levels on the field, be interesting to see how everyone pulls up. But we've got a lot of people we can select for next Test. I've loved it, last night was first stressful one, but it's Joe's team, he's the captain, look forward to welcoming him back."

Well done West Indies. I will admit I criticized Blackwood. I hope he goes on and cements his place.

Ben Stokes: It's great that we've been able to play cricket. We are used to playing in front of a lot more people. It's been amazing to be involved in getting back into cricket, in terms of viewership. Both sides had a lot of time to build up with the camps. West Indies had a lot of time getting ready in Manchester. It was a hard fought Test. The skills and the level of cricket played was fantastic. You have to believe that 200 is enough, and if you don't, you're already losing. We should have got more runs in the first innings. We weren't ruthless enough to make our batting innings count, despite getting into good positions. I would still have batted first, because first innings runs count. If we made 400-500 runs, we really would have taken it away. But it has been a massive learning curve for the batting line-up and the young guys. I don't regret leaving Stuart Broad out, and we are fortunate to leave someone like him out. I would be upset if he didn't show the passion he did in that interview, and he's nowhere near done. If he plays in the second Test I hope he walks off with some wickets. Pressure shows itself in different ways, and some hectic running goes on in the middle, and there are chances we didn't take. Lots of positives in retrospect, and a good learning curve this game. In terms of fitness, we had a long build up period, so it'll be interesting how everybody pulls up for the next Test. I've loved captaining England, but this is Joe's team and I welcome him back.

Jason Holder: One of our best victories. Yesterday was the best day I had in Test cricket. All the bowlers toiled hard yesterday, and it was a hard-fought day of Test cricket. I don't think any team knew. We had been sat at home doing nothing. We had time to prepare, but you never know. John took a blow today, but hopefully he will come through. We knew what was at stake yesterday evening. We knew we had 98 overs, and we had to go to 7PM. Alzarri and I thought we would bowl till 6:30 and the other two would take over. It would've been difficult to push for a win if we didn't bowl extremely well on a flat pitch. Blackwood was outstanding. Disappointing to see him get out on 95 but that's how he plays. Jermaine always tries and never short on effort, and today was his big moment.

Shannon Gabriel | Man of the Match | 9/137: I wasn't doubtful about my fitness. I knew I would play. I knew the work that I put in would take care of itself. I am still a bit stiff, but there are a few days to recover for the next Test match. Based on their workload, the fast bowlers I mean, they should be able to come through, depending on the recovery. However, the guys are pretty fit for the series. The guys were confident coming here after the win in the Caribbean last year, and we knew if we prepared well, we would be able to perform.
