HEADLINE: 'Keep rewarding mediocrity and you get mediocre performances' - Harper wants end of Windies 30s averages

West Indies chief of selectors Roger Harper believes it is critical for the team’s batsmen to improve their first-class cricket performances and raise the current standards of selection, in order to truly compete at the top level.

Heading into the series, the team’s top batsmen averaged in their 30s, their average performance during the series has not even lived up to that.  The batting average of the Windies’ batsmen in the series was 27.86 and, shockingly, stands out as one of the best for a series in the past several years.

“As far as our first-class game is concerned it is important for us to set standards for our players.  I don’t think we can continue to be content with picking players averaging 30 in first-class cricket that has to change,” Harper told the Mason and Guest radio program.

Sounds like Roger has bowed to pressure from his good friend Larr and will select Devon Smith for the next series cool

Harper is right, players who averages in the thirties in FC cricket would be inconsistent batsmen in Test cricket where the standards are higher. It is not only the players fault, the pitches have to improve.

I would suggest that Roger get his bosses at CWI to mandate that ALL players except people like Kieron Pollard must play in the 4 day competition and to ensure that from early January to late March, our cricketers are doing nothing else but playing in our 4 day competition.
DA IS ALL

But he picked Bonner wid a 27 FC average who was previously averaging around 25 after 62 FC games. Did somebody force his hand or did he just look at 1 season of performances

We should always demand higher standards but what are they going to do, stop playing test for now?

The decision makers are bone headed too, our three fast bowlers played three back to back matches as if they are machines.

Never in the history of test cricket three test matches been so closely scheduled.

Can Harper turn water into wine? Can he make bricks out of straw?

Harper means well but if he sticks to that standard windies cannot field a team.

The last west indies batsmen to average 40 plus are Gayle finished 2014 Sarwan 2011 and Jimmy Adams even before that

Harper said that on the Mason show, when he spoke about spinners bowling in England, and the non-selection of Permaul.
This was not from yesterday show.

CWI cannot afford to pay the men to play in West Indies First Class cricket.. so we get what we get
