Holding criticises Eng and Aus ...

NineMiles 2020-09-11 08:51:33

Michael Holding says England's decision to stop taking a knee before matches is out of line with global attempts to raise awareness about institutionalised racism and inequality.

The West Indies great spoke passionately in conjunction with Sky Sports colleague Ebony Rainford-Brent in July about the need to bring about meaningful change in society in the wake of the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minnesota in May.

His death sparked worldwide public protests and sports stars subsequently took a knee in a show of unprecedented support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

England and West Indies cricketers, along with officials and backroom staff, did so at the start of each of July's three Tests between the sides with the home side doing so again during their ODI series against Ireland.

Michael Holding criticises England for choosing not to take a knee in Pakistan and Australia series

What did you think of the criticism?

I thought it was measured and evidence based.
Glad he called out their All Lives Matter bullshit.

It didn’t take long for them to revert to type

Of course he is right in his criticism.

I'm not at all surprised the Eng team stopped taking the knee. They only did so because the Windies were kind enough to come over to help save the cricket summer.
It was only a phase to them and soon forgotten.
Words alone are not enough.... what actions are the ECB putting in place to eliminate discrimination in cricket?

Lewis Hamilton has to drag reluctant drivers to take the knee before the start of races and some still questioning how long is this going to carry on for!

Dis taking a knee ting shud stop. Wat sense does it make to force people to take a knee if dey doh want to in the first place? All dat does is build resentment to the cause and make those persons more likely to engage in discriminatory practices.

We are so satisfied wid token gestures

In reply to NineMiles i disagree with
holding on this one and i think he really is out of line.taking a knee should be a personal thing and just because you don't should not mean your a racists or siding with racists, they were black athletes and coaches in the nba and nfl who did not kneel for religious ,or cultural reasons and they support black lives matter,

it's funny he gave the pakistanis a pass did they kneel in the series against england and they ain't gonna be kneeling in the ipl either

That’s a fair assessment! wink

Whatever are the rights and wrongs of what Holding said, Archer is being stupid to allow himself to be used to front the response.

At the end of the day it is reasonable at least to question why they did it for the West Indian tour and not for Pakistan and Australia tours.

He is correct but England and Australia are racist to the bone

True to form, Eng women will take a knee...when WI tours rolleyes

pooranian 2020-09-14 14:24:20

He is totally wrong..it is a symbolic gesture.. making it mandatory just makes doesn't make any sense..team sports has no place for this..ot should be left to individuals..systemic racism like apartheid should be opposed through such steps ..the current racism..I dont think it has reached such levels yet..

It is glaring dat only Archer among de English players saw it fit to respond to Holding. Is he being used by de ECCB?

He is happy with the ‘behind the scenes hidden measures‘ and Mikey called him out on that one too wink wink wink

I get sports teams in the US kneeling at this time. What I don’t understand is why teams around the world kneeling? Or being ridiculed for not kneeling. Honestly asking here. I’m not in tune with social media and hardly watch news

Verstehen 2020-09-15 02:13:51

I realize the relevance of BLM. I'm not entirely sure why continuing to take a knee is so relevant to Mikey when he could have been highlighting structural/ systemic flaws and improvements needed therein.

I understand the power of symbols but I'm not sure of what context Holding is coming from. Does he expect teams to do it for a period of time, or forever?

I think to me it was clear from his two long interviews

He has seen it all before and this time it must not just be a 2 week thing then back to normal

Mikey, and many, fear than momentum will be lost. People in power that can influence millions, like in sport, must bear the weight of responsibility responsibly.

pooranian 2020-09-15 11:26:56

Personally I fell sports and showbiz can only do so much...it is for the general public and political system with the state apparatus to take it forward..

Cisco 2020-09-15 14:31:18

In reply to pooranian Did you actually listen to Mikey... He said that if you are not into this BLM crap just say it. Don't make it out to be that as a result of you playing WI you are doing the knee.

It is not about believing not believing...but making its ritual is not correct...you brought into public notice..leave it at that

Ok.

I have a lot of respect for Mikey. I'm not sure I agree with him on this one but I can see where he's coming from.
