In reply to culpepperboy

Did you know that Conkie is the derivative of the Ghanian dish called Kenkey?

kenkey

Mediavine
WHAT IS KENKEY?
Kenkey is a typical Ghanaian dish made from fermented white corn, which is widely consumed throughout the country by Ga people from southern Ghana.

Mediavine
The Ga tribe calls it komi. The Fante tribe who lives in the center of the country calls it dokono.

StumpCam 2020-11-24 13:43:49

In reply to Larr Pullo

Didn’t know that! I thought it was an indigenous dish!

Larr Pullo 2020-11-24 14:01:15

In reply to StumpCam

Nope, straight from Africa. FuFu/FooFoo is also from Nigeria.

Well done, Larr. i see that Burnham scholarship hasnt gone to waste or to your waist.

i take it that guyanese enjoy a stew dumpling conkie or two. or did bajans take that to guyana?

Larr Pullo 2020-11-24 14:14:27

In reply to sudden

So most Bajans were originally from the area that is now known as Nigeria in Western Africa. So KenKey might have followed a different path. I know people in the islands who call it by the Fante tribal name Dokono or Dookoono

@ the Bajans.

“Conkies are stew dumplings but ‘poor great’ people add cherries and raisins to the recipe so they wouldn’t be eating poor people food,” I concluded.

Traces of our African heritage still remain in the Caribbean, in foodstuff, stories and miscellaneous words. In a few cases, huge pieces remain, as in Berbice Dutch and religious languages in Cuba, Haiti and a few others.

For some reason, we have not done comprehensive studies to preserve what is left or tie it all together. We need to.

Even Burnham did very little to study, preserve or promote African heritage. He promoted the basic concept that our African heritage was important and just as worthy of our attention as any other culture, tho.

Maybe one day we will get it right - museums, books, videos, classes, etc, all in a few selected places across the Caribbean, etc.
