Narper 2020-12-02 20:14:12

Venue: Seddon Park, Hamilton

West Indies (Playing XI):
Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shamarh Brooks, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich(w), Jason Holder(c), Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel, Alzarri Joseph

New Zealand (Playing XI):
Tom Latham, Will Young, Kane Williamson(c), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell(w), Daryl Mitchell, Kyle Jamieson, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Narper 2020-12-02 20:15:40

What to expect:
A well-grassed pitch that's indistinguishable from the rest of the square. But that doesn't mean a seam-bowling paradise or total disregard for the spinners. The last Test match against England in 2019 was a draw.

It's a strong home ground for New Zealand nonetheless; they haven't lost a Test here since 2012, winning five and drawing two.

Winds and occasional rain showers are predicted throughout the Test match.

Narper 2020-12-02 20:20:54

Runs in the two warm-up games from Kraigg Brathwaite (highest first-class score of 246) and Darren Bravo and (135 and 93) though should help the batting feel good ahead of the series.

West Indies: There's no Shai Hope, who's been dropped owing to poor form, so Shamarh Brooks will shift up and take his place. The return of Darren Bravo is good news for Holder, especially in the light of how shaky the top order looked a few months ago in bowling-friendly conditions in England.

Batting to 8?

Or give Chemar Holder a debut?

That’s really the only West Indies decision to make for this test.

Likely XI

Brathwaite
Campbell
Bravo
Brooks
Hetmeyer
Chase
Holder
Dowrich
Joseph
Roach
Gabriel

Lemme see.

WI bats first. All out after lunch.
NZ bats till after tea on Day 2.
Match over by Day 3!!!

Or

NZ bat first. Bat till after tea on Day2.
WI out by Tea on Day 3. Follow on.
Match over by Day 4!!!!

Either way, NZ batting for most of Day 2!

Note: It doesn't matter which team WI pick. So, just enjoy the match!!!

Narper 2020-12-02 21:17:04

10:10 am: Before we go any further, here's some wet weather news from Hamilton. It's been a rainy morning and we're set for a delayed start. The entire square has been covered, but the forecast is for better weather for the rest of the day. WE might actually get a bit of cricket before lunch, but for now - the 10:30 toss is off

Narper 2020-12-02 21:37:11

10:30 am: We have live pictures from the ground and the drizzle is still on. The groundsmen are expecting this rain to clear up by around 1 PM, but for now, there's nothing one can do. It's pretty safe to say that the first session could be washed out.

Narper 2020-12-02 21:45:35

10:40 am: We're hearing that BJ Watling has been ruled out of the Test. No official confirmation as yet, but Brendon McCullum just said New Zealand will miss their talisman in this Test. We will wait for an official update.

Norm 2020-12-02 21:48:51

Rain! Woohoo!!!!

Jamstar 2020-12-02 21:50:21

Why Blackwood getting dropped ? He didn't set the world on fire in England but in his 3 test he had 2 half centuries and averaged 35.

imusic 2020-12-02 22:05:09

In reply to Conorboy

Right. Blackwood is a good call and should play

Narper 2020-12-02 22:06:32

11:05 am: The two on-field umpires for this Test, Chris Gaffaney and Wayne Knights, are out in the middle to have a look and speak with the groundsmen. It hasn't stopped raining, so the umbrellas aren't down

Narper 2020-12-02 22:18:50

some of the covers are being peeled off, only the square covers remain

anthonyp 2020-12-02 22:21:54

Really looking forward to this tour. Last time around, we didn't do so well so we want to put that right, says Roston Chase. Bit sad that it's a delayed start. Last two days at practice the sun was absolutely shining. Last time we were a very young team and we were a bit surprised by the short ball. In first-class cricket, you don't really see it, but in international cricket, you see a lot of it. Some guys handled it well. Some guys didn't. The coach had a stern meeting about it in England and ever since then we've been tailoring practice to that.

Hmmm.. well I guess the guys will deal with anything short in this match.. short ball worries behind us now big grin

Jamstar 2020-12-02 22:31:24

In first-class cricket, you don't really see it, but in international cricket, you see a lot of it.

He can also add the turning ball, the swinging ball.

clokey 2020-12-02 22:41:51

I know the pitch is green and it's been raining, but I would still bat first if you win the toss.

Too often touring teams get overly excited by a green pitch in NZ and live to regret bowling first.

Narper 2020-12-02 22:48:34

11:40 am: Rain has cleared and the pitch has been uncovered. We will have toss at 12:10 pm with a starting time of 12:40 pm. That would mean lunch could be delayed by a bit.

Narper 2020-12-02 22:50:08

The players have begun warming up, plenty of activity on either side of the pitch. Phil Simmons has a look at the pitch, looks very green, but it could be deceptive as well

WIForever 2020-12-02 22:57:37

West Indies A batting in other game.

Narper 2020-12-02 23:01:16

12 noon: The toss has been pushed back a bit. It will now happen at 12:30 pm with the first ball set to be bowled at 1 PM - which was the actual lunch time

I would like to have a bowl on this pitch', says Ian Bishop, in his pitch report. There is plenty of grass, around 15 mm, it could get harder as the game progresses, it's not that hard as of now, a bowl first track.

West Indies A batting in other game.

Where are the scores for this match?

Narper 2020-12-02 23:29:19

12:25 pm : Toss in 7 minutes, both captains are already in whites. It's bright and sunny at the moment, not that it will change the captain's thought process if he wins the toss.

Narper 2020-12-02 23:38:03

Jason Holder -
We will bowl. There's quite a bit of grass, it's pretty high. We had a good couple of warm-up games, conditions will be in favour of the pacers, yes, there could be some pressure on us. We have left out Rakheem Cornwall, Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and Chemar Holder

LBW375 2020-12-02 23:38:27

Blackwood at 5 ?

Narper 2020-12-02 23:38:45

Kane Williamson -
We would have bowled first as well. Need to assess the conditions as early as possible, there's a green tinge on this wicket. Excited to be back playing Tests. Devon Conway misses out; so does BJ Watling with an injury. Every game is important at Test level

clokey 2020-12-02 23:39:41

Good starting XI.

My smokey for Man of the match is Alzarri.

Keemo WI days done. If he does well enough in the T20 leagues then he will be gone from WI cricket for good, sort of like Sherfane. A quick end to his WI caeer!

hahahahaha... he's 22! Relax.

anthonyp 2020-12-02 23:55:11

CamHD: "Already perplexed by NZ's lineup. Why are they opening with Will Young, who's on debut and doesn't open in first-class cricket? Blundell taking over the gloves isn't a logical reason - they're batting first. In fact, right away, he's more likely to get rest before fielding if he opens rather than bats further down. Gary Stead has made some pretty poor decisions in the past, and here's one before a ball is bowled." O-U-C-H!

So NZ opening with a guy who don't normally open in FC and on his debut too.. why our selectors still going with Campbell?

Chrissy 2020-12-03 00:01:10

Kemar's father died two days ago - deepest sympathy to him.

Norm 2020-12-03 00:03:49

Whoa. Almost bowled Latham first ball. Then a lot of swing away.

Narper 2020-12-03 00:04:12

Latham and Will Young are at the crease.

Latham is on strike.

Roach will open the attack

0.1
Roach to Latham, no run

[Review!
Uh oh. Impact outside. Jason didn't want that review, but Gabriel insisted.

Narper 2020-12-03 00:10:00

Gabriel to Will Young, no run, loud shout for LBW, but think the impact was outside off. Gabriel is convinced though and he forces his captain to review. Was definitely crashing into the stumps, but Young got a decent stride forward, where is the impact? No inside edge and UltraEdge confirms it. Ball-tracjing in: The impact is outside off and West Indies lose a review. Fair to say it's a poor review from the visitors, the impact looked very dicey to the naked eye - the inswinger and Young didn't cover for it as he pushed forward, past the inside edge and struck on the flap of the back-pad

clokey 2020-12-03 00:10:02

Not a good review - looked pretty obvious it hit him outside off.

Casper 2020-12-03 00:10:57

Gabriel looks fitter and slimmer by about 10 lbs.

Norm 2020-12-03 00:13:30

Gabriel starting to loosen up by the end of the over.

0-0 in 2 overs.

2.1
Roach to Latham, 3 runs, to deep extra cover

Norm 2020-12-03 00:15:21

Wow! Good leg cutter from Roach. Beats the defensive bat completely.

Norm 2020-12-03 00:16:01

Three slips. Jason has come a long way!

clokey 2020-12-03 00:17:19

Incredibly early to say this, but this is not a good start.

Only 4 balls out of first 18 have looked even semi-threatening.

C'mon boys - find those lengths.

Norm 2020-12-03 00:17:41

Edged to gully but falls short by a foot or two!

Narper 2020-12-03 00:19:44

3.2
Gabriel to Latham, FOUR, cracking shot, wide half-volley from Gabriel, Latham leans into the drive, opens the face of the bat at the last moment and places it into the gap past point for a boundary

Norm 2020-12-03 00:19:53

Latham drives Gab nicely past point for 4!

clokey 2020-12-03 00:21:38

Simple drop. fuck.

Narper 2020-12-03 00:22:37

Big BLUNDER !!!!!! Chance gawn !!!!
Dowskunt pulls out after going for it
3.5
Gabriel to Will Young, FOUR, edged , that will go down as a chance - it's Dowrich who is the guilty person, went for the catch and bailed out at the last moment. Bravo at second slip had turned his head away from the action - the edge flew right between those two and into the ropes. Agony for Gabriel - beautifully bowled first-up, hint of swing from off and it caught Young's edge as he pushed forward. Dowrich dived across to his right and pulled out at the very last moment

WIForever 2020-12-03 00:22:43

Out.

clokey 2020-12-03 00:22:50

yes!

Narper 2020-12-03 00:23:16

Gawn now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angel strikes !!!!!!!!!!!!!

3.6
Gabriel to Will Young, out Lbw!! Gabriel has his man now, a deserved wicket for the Windies pacer. Inswinger and Young is caught right at the crease, nipped back in sharply from off and Young was caught in the crease, ended up playing all around it and missed. Trapped in the crease and on the back-pad, the ball would have been smashing into the middle-stump. As plumb as it gets, he doesn't even ponder about the review.

Will Young lbw b Gabriel 5(11) [4s-1]

Norm 2020-12-03 00:24:16

What the? Dowrich just pulled away and let a fairly easy catch go.

Luckily Gab gets his man plumb lbw immediately afterward. Young did not look comfortable there.

Both him and Brandon King hung their bats outside off to offer catching practice to the slips.

The batsmen will b a lot more attacking after tea so if we don't get our act together we will get some good wood!

dayne 2020-12-03 03:11:10

The WI are bowling against two world class batsmen and there is one more to come in Taylor, hopefully they could dismiss them before the day is over. The pitch looks like a good one, the WI will have to be smart and work hard.

clokey 2020-12-03 03:31:35

I hate to be an "I told you so", but this is what I said before the toss:

I know the pitch is green and it's been raining, but I would still bat first if you win the toss.

Too often touring teams get overly excited by a green pitch in NZ and live to regret bowling first.

Barring a miracle and the Windies take 4-5 wickets in the next hour, Holder's men can no longer win this game.

Jamstar 2020-12-03 03:32:09

I more worried about getting them to appeal after they have dismissed the batsman.

This is honestly some of the most braindead cricket I've ever seen.

clokey 2020-12-03 22:17:22

Can anyone explain what the thinking could be behind what we're seeing?

Roach bowls just two (good) overs and is taken out.

Not taking the new ball, despite having a fresh batsmen at the crease.

No word from management about Bravo/Dowrich.

I love the windies, but they're a hard team to follow - just incredibly unprofessional.

Alzarri Joseph to Williamson, FOUR, to backward square leg. beautifully played, fraction too short from Joseph, KW swivels across, rolls his wrists and pulls it past square leg for a boundary

Roston Chase to Williamson, 3 runs, cracking shot, 150 for KW, his 7th such score - the off-break from Chase, but he dragged the length short, KW is quick to rock back on the cut and finds the gap in front of cover, needed a sliding stop at the ropes by Chemar to prevent the boundary

Gawn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

111.4
Gabriel to Tom Blundell, out Lbw!! Blundell reviews an LBW: It's no secret that Gabriel's made him his bunny in his short career thus far, and this time there's no inside edge that' coming to his rescue as well. He's trapped in the crease as he looks to whip this one across the line, and gets beaten for pace to take it on the front pad. And ball-tracking confirms the same -- plumb, three reds, with the ball hitting the middle of leg-stump. PLUMB.

Alzarri Joseph to Williamson, out Caught by Roston Chase!! KW has been dismissed, yes, West Indies finally find a way to get the man dismissed, he walks off to a standing ovation from the balcony as well as the crowd that has witnessed a classic in Hamilton. Even West Indians know the monumental effort, plenty of pats on his back as he walked off. Banged in short again and for once - KW didn't get the timing on the pull, straight down the throat of Chase at deep mid-wicket.

Glenn Turner 259 in the test at Bourda in 1972. Did you see any part of that?

Naw! At least, I don't remember doing so!

My trusty transistor partially saved me from that torture, after Adonis bowled Jarvis for a duck off an inside edge. Congdon and Turner then proceeded to dash all our hopes, Congdon fluent and Turner poking, poking, poking, poking, poking, ...

Turner started off that tour with a reasonably quick 200+ against the President's XI, but at least Lawrence Rowe fired back with a double century of his own. Then Turner made another 200+, against Jamaica I believe. Then 2 more 200+ scores in Guyana, by which time Turner had become the Paramount Poker.

I saw a bit of Murray Webb, Collinge (and Bruce Taylor, I believe) during the Kiwi practice sessions, which alone attracted hundreds of fans, but a trip to Berbice during the Kiwi matches saved me from the Turner Torture!

If I remember correctly, this NZ vs Guyana match was also Clive Lloyd's big comeback match, after being laid up for almost 2 years with a back injury sustained while fielding in a WI vs Aus Test. Lloyd made 178 for Guyana, in about a day, before Turner and company killed off the remaining 3 days while Turner gathered 259.

Fans felt that Turner had burnt himself out with that long 259 vs Guyana, but they were wrong - big time!

Southee to John Campbell, out Caught by Williamson!! Three blocks, that's all Campbell can resist. And come ball four, he goes driving aimlessly at a length delivery to throw away all the hardwork he put in yesterday. Southee's kept it tight once again -- good length, on off, swinging in,

Darren Bravo:
There's a slight strain on my ankle, but having said that, I am feeling much better and should be able to bat at some point of time. I actually felt it when Williamson on-drove the ball off Chase and I dived for the ball. I felt a very sharp pain and I went for the scans yesterday morning. There was no sign of tear and I was happy about that.

Feeling good, quite confident. I have put in a lot of hard work, I've been here in NZ for some time. I am in a good frame of mind and the team is confident as well so let's see how this goes. The hundred in the warm up gives me confidence.

For some reason my overseas records are better than my home records although I can't pinpoint what the reason behind that is. Maybe I stay a lot more focussed here. I enjoy batting in these conditions, you get value for your runs. I convince myself each and every day that I am good enough to play at this level.

Boult to Kraigg Brathwaite, out Caught by Tom Blundell!! 17 minutes, 19 balls, and Boult's nailed the biggest blow to this lineup. And he's done it with a delivery that goes across. So Boult's got this reputation of inswingers to right-handers, and Brathwaite hangs around on the back foot with his feet going nowhere for one such delivery. Alas, it's not. And his hands poking away from his body get a thick edge, and the keeper's diving full length in front of first slip to pluck

30.6
Southee to Darren Bravo, no run, Bravo reviews an LBW: But before that, he's walked across his stumps, frozen in front of the stumps and then flicked all around this inswinger. So Southee's coming over the wicket, and the impact's umpire's call with leg-stump, and the ball's swinging down leg. Just, millimeters

Courtesy 2020-12-04 22:30:01

Bravo's batting stance is too square. He needs to get that left leg pointing to more mid off/cover to allow him to access the ball on the leg side. From his current batting stance he has rotate too much to play leg side shots efficiently. He needs to make this slight technical adjustment. Front this position he can only depend on a leg glance and it will be difficult for him to on drive.

That dismissal was always on the cards. Bravo's bat has to come around too much to hit the ball thru the leg side. It is easier for the bat to miss the half bat during all this rotation.

If anything this ball should have been on driven.

Narper 2020-12-04 23:09:50

39.1
Wagner to Roston Chase, out Lbw!! Loud shout for LBW, New Zealand think it's pad first and they opt for the review. This looked close to the naked eye, is it swinging too much and going down leg? It's definitely pad first and UltraEdge confirms it. Struck bang on the knee-roll, not a big stride either. It's three REDS on ball tracking, Chase is OUT. West Indies in a tailspin and the look on Simmons's face tells it all - the inswinger from Wagner and Chase played all around it as he looked to work it to leg - he plonked his left leg right across and then fell over as he brought his bat across, missed and was struck bang in front of middle. The ball was straightening enough to crash into the top of middle. Always looked close and Gaffaney has to change his decision

Roston Chase lbw b Wagner 11(29) [4s-2]

Wagner to Holder, no ball, Holder has been given OUT LBW and he's walking, but hang on! Wagner has overstepped, by the tiniest margin posible. It's a reprieve for Holder - the inswinger and Holder played all around it, stck in the crease and trapped right in front of middle. On the back-pad as well, was crashing into the middle and leg. He was happy to go, only to be called back

If you put in the work, you can handle any type of bowling.
I remmen ber Sobers telling Holdford at Lords, playing here is no different than playing in the Park. ( He is getting his cousin to be comfortible)
Seymour Nurse was different, he got guys to bowl to him, for hours from Sunrise to Sunset for 7 days, in preparation for the Aussie.
Reading Bobbie Simpson book, he stated, he felt sorry for Nurse as he waked towards the wicket, as his inning progress, he felt sorrier for the Aussie bowlers.
Lloyd on the Mason show last Tuesday, spoke about an English bats, getting dropped, spent 4 months in Australia, and 2-3 months in India, on his own coin, just to get his game on track.

Tim Southee:
It was a nice session, think we went far off last night but the way we were able to come out today and pick a couple of early wickets, it's been an impressive start. We were just more accurate (today), we were's quite consistent last night. This morning, we put it in the right areas for long enough and we've been able to pick wickets from both ends. It does swing here a little bit, we were able to get swing in the air early and hope there's little more after lunch. But we know these two guys are more than capable at the wicket at the moment.

Norm 2020-12-05 00:59:39

Southee bowls at barely 130k, but his swing is quite a threat.

WI had Keemo developing into a swing bowler, but chose to have him in and out the team, even when he was fit. Ah, well.

Southee to Blackwood, out Caught by Latham!! Edged and gone! 130.5kph, Southee goes full and wide of off, Blackwood sees the line outside off and throws his bat hard for a drive well away from his body. Gets a fat outside edge and Latham catches it above his head at second slip.

Poor decision, in my opinion. I am not sure if Campbell even edged it. And that ball hit the grass while the catch was being taken.

Tough on Campbell.

Bish was surprised too, alright.

That umpire should not have been allowed to change his decision to "out", when the matter was about to go up to the third umpire for review. The ruling umpire had effectively ruled "not out" up to that point, but suddenly changed to "out".

If he was that sure, why didn't he rule that Campbell was "out" when the appeal went up? This was one of the poorest decisions I have seen in a long time.

Holder and the team management should protest the umpire changing his ruling to deliberately facilitate the batsman's dismissal - a clear sign of umpire bias.
