India Tops 100,000 Cases a Day as Virus Races Out of Control[/url]
India on Saturday reported a daily record of 145,384 new infections as Covid-19 raced out of control. Deaths, while still relatively low, are rising. Vaccinations, a mammoth task in such a large nation, are dangerously behind schedule. Hospital beds are running short.
Parts of the country are reinforcing lockdowns. Scientists are rushing to track new versions, including the more hazardous variants found in Britain and South Africa, that may be hastening the spread. But the authorities have declared contact tracing in some places to be simply impossible.
Complacency and government missteps have helped turn India from a seeming success story into one of the worlds worst-hit places, experts say. And epidemiologists warn that continuing failure in India would have global implications.

It's a business. Like other businesses they reduced the capacity that can be in the store to almost nothing and they are taking extra precautions in the bubble for both the workers (players) and other staff.

It is still big business, the league makes hundreds of millions from Television broadcasting. The WI T20 tournament had their most successful year this year because of Television.

I agree, but most of the players don't seem to mind risking covid for the big payouts. The entertainment makes the lockdown more bearable too. At least, there are no audiences in the stadiums.
Contrast that with the crowds allowed in arenas at many sports events in the USA.
The IPL is driven by immense greed at many levels tho. Arguably, Indian cricket has benefitted, because their national teams have risen to the tops of all formats. At some point, the currently invisible problems associated with the greed will start making themselves felt.

India earned it by bringing a great deal of money to the game. Without India's cricket money, the game might have already folded in the West Indies, for example, where cricket has been run by dictators like Dave or outright frauds like Brer Anansi.

I still work and will continue doing so till my last day, because I enjoy my work.
Even if I were retired I would have still earned every penny of it.

I am glad there are no people in the stadiums, like they allow for some sports in some states in the USA. New Zealand and Australia might have been good venues for this year's IPL.

No criticism of EPL when it continued to play during the biggest Covid surge in the UK?
No criticism of NFL or NBA or NHL or MLB when PLAYERS tested and continue to test positive in significant numbers during the pandemic?
No criticism of worldwide mass protests of the George Floyd killing during the pandemic

Is there some kind of equality of criticism principle here? A validation of sorts to coerce all, or the "cause" of those not criticizing won't get reciprocal support?

I appreciate all the West Indians who braved the prevailing situation in India and the world and have traveled to be part of the IPL. It is so refreshing to hear Brian Lara in the studios delivering his expert analysis..

If yuh criticizing IPL, criticize all sports leagues that doing the same thing. Some more intensely with spectators.
Many people are able to work from home. Pro athletes dont have that luxury. They should stay at home until the pandemic is over?
Since the onset of the pandemic, protocols have been established in pro sports where it is relatively safe to resume work. They get tested daily. If they test positive, theyre imeedistly isolated etc. its a very protective and proactive environment.....regardless of what stage the pandemic is in. If it gets to a point where its not sustainable, or cases in that evenvironemt look like they could get out of control, they will take action then.
In the meantime, why the need to cease operations? Why is it seen as greed if they dont?
If you working during this pandemic....you making your living. Why shouldnt they?

I take it you didn't read the entire thread. I agree(d) that the IPL is driven by greed, but not that it should have "ceased operations" until the end of the virus, or at any other time.
The question of greed is more political than sports-related.

If the IPL was the only sport being played, then would be okay to talk about greed.
I am watching The Masters with fans,County cricket is being played, NHL, NBA and Baseball are also in full swing.

It seems like the letting the crowds in for the recent test matches in India triggered an umpteenth wave of COVID.
