Still the first day, but I was interested in the Boys Class 1 long jump.

"Kavian Kerr of St Jago High broke the heart of Luke Brown of Calabar High when he produced his best jump of 7.81m on his final attempt to take the gold medal in the Class One long jump. Brown's 7.65m earned him the silver medal."

And the Boys Class One and Class Two 110m hurdles.

"Allem Pinto of STETHS won the Class Two 110m hurdles final in 13.55 seconds, just ahead of Andre Harris of St Jago who was second in 13.57....Tajae Francis of KC managed to avoid the carnage to win the race in 13.52 seconds, Jaheim Stern of JC was second in 13.78 seconds, while Radjae Reid of Excelsior was third in 15.25 seconds."

Covid turning everything upside down.

KC lead but the expectation is that JC will overtake them at some point but both schools are dealing with injuries and unexpected low performances.

Many times JC has flattered only to deceive. I have a feeling KC will hang on though I wouldn’t mind seeing a new champion.

"Javier Brown of Jamaica College (JC) broke the Class One 400m hurdles record of 49.94 seconds when he ran 49.86 seconds to win the final event on day four of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at the National Stadium yesterday."

Boys

"St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) won all three 100m boys' finals to steal the spotlight on day three of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at National Stadium yesterday....At the end of the shot put competition and with just one event left to score for the day, JC were on 124.5 points and KC on 121 points, a narrow but important 4.5 points lead for the boys from Old Hope Road."

Boys

"GARRIEL White of Hydel High ran a personal best 57.65 seconds, the third-best time in the world by an Under-20 female, to win the 400m hurdles Open on yesterday's fourth and penultimate day of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships at National Stadium....Meanwhile, it will take a major disaster to stop Edwin Allen winning a seventh-straight title as after 27 finals they have raced to 212 points – 26.5 better than second-place St Jago High on 185.5, Hydel High who are third on 161.5, Holmwood Technical with 71.5 and Vere Technical who moved past Wolmer's High School for Girls into fifth place on 49 points."

Bouwaghie had to double here as both Stennet and Vascianna were injured or ill-prepared. Just the same, there was a lot of, to put it bluntly, abuse as its not right to have athletes especially the lower classes doing the 200/440 double plus the 4x100 and then the upper class doing on Saturday alone 200/400/4x100 & or 4x400.

"JAMAICA College (JC) completed their highly anticipated victory at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics Championships yesterday, winning the event by 15.5 points over the defending champions Kingston College (KC) to claim their 22nd hold on the Mortimer Geddes Trophy at the National Stadium yesterday. JC ended on 328.50, while KC were second on 313 points. Calabar High were a distant third with 241.50, while St Elizabeth Technical with 181 and St Jago with 129 points, rounded out the top five."

Boys

"DESPITE what Head Coach Michael Dyke described as “challenged from the very start and even through this week”, Edwin Allen High completed the defence of their ISSA/GraceKennedy Girls' title as the first-ever Champs to be run in a pandemic came to a close yesterday at the National Stadium. Edwin Allen amassed 340 points to deny the chasing St Jago High (309.5 points) and Hydel (301 points), with Holmwood Technical a distant fourth with 160.5 and Vere Technical rounding out the top five with 128 points."

Congrats to JC.Solid performance.

Very ironic how Vasciana went to KC and could not even compete.

Also,Stennett being hurt from class 2 and could not recover. Nathanaiel Bann comes to mind. Now wondering if Lawrence will ever recover.

The abuse has been going on for years Joe. One Bally Reed comes to mind. Rumours rampant how Foggy doing his miracle works on him just to run the 100.

JoeGrine 2021-05-16 15:06:00

In reply to RoyalDad

Lot of irony to go around.

1) The JC coach was at KC and couldn't get it done there
2) Vascianna left Jago winning every year, shows up at KC cannot complete a race
3) Stennett's only real healthy season was Class 4!!
4) St. Jago's C1 4x100 was ravaged by the departures of Vascianna (KC) and Thomas (JC). Neither boys ran in the 4x100 finals on teams expected to approach 38seconds and St. Jago won in a school record time.

Now on to the "what ifs"
1) What would a KC team of Kerr, Vascianna,Nkumrie,Stennett have done
2) What would a JC team of Thomas, Brown,Bent,McIntosh have done
3) What would a St. Jago team of Thomas, Vascianna,Kerr,Gillips have done
***

KC's damaged good roll also includes the wonderfully talented Dontre Williams. Let's hope the equally talented Lawrence is given the time and support needed for 100% recovery.
****

When will ISSA step in and put some rule in place to curb what could develop into a widescale pillaging of talent by some schools across the Caribbean?
How fair is it for a boy from St. Vincent (for example) to come in and compete right away while a transfer from York Castle (for example) have to sit for a year?

Congrats Mike. Very well done. I was expecting JC to get even more 800m and 1500m points. This year I was forced to give other matters priority. Watched very little of Champs.

Now that JC has raised the competition I look forward to some interesting battles. I anticipate it will take a lot to unseat JC.

Headley 2021-05-18 17:07:08

In reply to RoyalDad

I had family and work commitments this year. it was almost funny how they coincided with Champs but that's life.

Not making excuses, JC was a well deserved winner. The evidence suggests that the KC team was underprepared due to covid.

Looking forward it will take a lot of work to get back the MG trophy.

Headley 2021-05-19 01:53:06

We need 400m, 800m and 1500m runners badly. Having a residential facility means JC distance runners can train conveniently mornings or even at night. We have to match that.

i have no problem with that and would expect Watson to make the relay team. i expect either Taylor or Bloomfield will win at trials. I hope Bloomfield can run after his injury, and even worse, the tragic death of his mother. Bloomfield on the second leg would be awesome. He made the 400 finals at the WC. He can do it. Concentrate on the 400 and not the 200. He will pull a muscle in the 200. I dont know if Nathon Allen is in form as i am not aware of him running, but he has been there before. Antonio Watson is talented and egotistical..i like it. i dont think there are 6 runners in Jamaica who can beat him over 400.

man...time flies doesn't it? thanks for the correction. i just looked at the iaaf site and it says he was born August 2002. i still think of him as the 14 year old kid. just amazing that he is 19. Being a country man i am just ecstatic that steths swept the 100s. Just down the hill from Mandeville so i have to cheer for them

i told you all after champs 2019 that JC looked primed and ready.

completely unrelated question... at the JAAA meets, i see all sorts of sprinters, but any word on Michael Ohara and KBC? have they retired? odd. you would think that being an olympic year and trials in the summer, they would make an appearance by now. i see where Nickel Ashmead ran a few weeks ago

JoeGrine 2021-05-19 14:59:31

In reply to rudebway

Dennis of StETHS winning the 100m and said school sweeping the 100m is a reminder of how far we have come. Gone are the days when a country bwoy even in a 100m finals was an oddity and something to send the tongues wagging. Ferguson (CORN) Morris (HOLM) in the 60s, I remember Steele of Knox and Waldo Reid of Clarendon all making town folks stop and pay respect to the "country" sprinters.

i told you all after champs 2019 that JC looked primed and ready.

Hydel (girls) and KC would have easily won a 2020 Champs. Unfortunately, they never got the chance. JC is loaded, CHS has to reload and I am not sure the resources are there for a Championship type of reloading. KC will need to rebuild!

What was the problem with Venson?

Has Tavaughn Martin committed murder or worse? He's the class 3 boys 1500m record holder (2019) but no one called his name this year. I was wondering if he transferred to a big name school. Would he have been able to run at the Qualification meets?

Lyston was at one of the early meets but did not see her at the Qual meets. Congruent?

JoeGrine 2021-05-20 12:54:40

Martin - ran last year for Bellfield. Haven't seen him this year.

Lyston - is at Hydel had to sit out Champs due to transfer.

Venson - simply one of Calabar's big disappointment this year.
