West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has credited increased mental focus on his batting with improved performances at the crease.

Over the past several months, the bowler has made the headlines for positing solid totals at the crease, as much as if not more than multiple wicket hauls.

Against New Zealand, in December of last year, Joseph recorded his highest total of 86, which was his maiden half-century. The Antiguan then went on to add another after scoring 82 in February this year against Bangladesh.

“Whatever I could contribute to the team I am happy to do, so it’s good that I have been getting a few scores but for me, I think it’s also about being consistent doing it,” Joseph told the Antigua Observer.

Son....learn to take wickets first... that's your primary function as a fast bowler.... even Walsh said ,it took him 4 years to understand the skill of getting wickets in test.... without mastering the art of taking wickets.... your admitted focus on batting would ruin your career...like Irfan Pathan... remember Jason Gillispie was dropped from Australia team after scoring double hundred..... you should appreciate that the county opportunity came your way, only because the county wanted a strike match winning bowler....

Well its not a zero sum game, he can do both. There is no evidence his improved batting has caused or is causing his wicket taking column to look thin.

Check his bowling stats, it has been a straight line.

As you have correctly pointed out , Joseph has not improved as a strike bowler......this itself is a matter of grave concerned...Haddlee,Akram,Kapil, Imran, Marshall, Ambrose,Lee,.....some developed into all rounders....some very handy lower order batters....but all of them first learned the art of taking wickets in clusters... Joseph should first learn the art of becoming a strike bowler, then surely horn his skills with willow.... developing both set of skills , together, very rare in test cricket....

It might help he the same way.

Bowling needs to improve yes and quickly too. I know Josephs in no Sir Gary but what was his primary role when he first started? If Aljo can maintain that focus and give us 1/2 to 2/3 of Sir Gary's wkt. haul we could all be happy.
