Grenada

Kirani James heads a six-member Grenada team to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

James, the 2012 Olympic champion, and Grenada’s first Olympic gold medalist is one of four track and field athletes named including 2019 World Champion Anderson Peters, Meleni Rodney, the 2014 Youth Olympics bronze medalist and veteran decathlete Linden Victor.

Two swimmers – Kimberly Ince (100m backstroke) and Delron Felix (100m freestyle) – have also been named to the team. The IOC awarded Grenada two wild card places for swimming.

More teams to be posted over the coming days....

It is a sad time for Bermuda as this will be the first Summer Games in many many years (I think 1972) without a T&F representative.

Flora Duffy should be a medal hope in triathlon, the other athlete selected is Dara Alizadeh in rowing.

One thing for sure. Because Japan have banned spectators, they won't hit 50k a day. At present Japan have only 3k a day.

BVI and others

Another Gold Coast 2018 champion, Kyron McMaster, is considered a dark horse to win the men’s 400m hurdles for the British Virgin Islands. Just 24-years-old, he will have the daunting task of facing off against three of the four fastest intermediate hurdlers of all time, including the world record holder. McMaster has produced career-best efforts this season and will be eying a first-ever Olympic medal for the BVI. Like McMaster, long jumper Chantel Malone is the fourth-best in her event so far this year. She’s also been the most consistent over the seven-metre mark. With both events taking place in the same session, it could be a glorious day for the BVI. Swimmer Elinah Phillip will go in the women’s 50m freestyle, whilst Eldred Henry has unfortunately been ruled out of the men’s shot putt with an elbow injury.

I think his significant other's representing the US so he'd be there in some capacity. I recall his attempts to qualify were curtailed so it wasn't meant to be.

He carried the torch well after Brian Wellman (best finish: 5th in triple jump) and we have a youngster Jahnai Perenchief who has an NCAA silver this season.

In reply to Jumpstart

You know what also was a bad idea? The football Euros! But they went ahead anyway....
smile
Thousands of Brits who attended the matches in England have now tested positive for coronavirus. It's so bad that Londoners are calling it the Wembley variant (BBC London news, 16 July). Then there was this.

Do you agree with me that the football Euros were also a bad idea?

So, if a coronavirus superspreader event such as the football Euros could go ahead, so can the Olympics.
cool
From the Stabroek link above:

"The Commonwealth of Dominica will have two athletes in track and field. Thea LaFond will go in the women’s triple jump, and she will be eager to create some positive Olympic memories. Just days before Rio 2016, she sustained a hamstring injury, and was 37th and last in qualifying. Two years later, though, she rebounded with the Commonwealth’s first-ever Commonwealth Games medal, a bronze. Now 27, she has been in superlative form these past two years. No athlete from Dominica has ever competed in an Olympic final and LaFond will be keen to change that. Dennick Luke is the other athlete repping Dominica and he was awarded a universality place in the men’s 800m."

Nuff respect, as always....

From the Stabroek link above, here's the St Kitts-Nevis team:

"Jason Rogers qualified to run the men’s 100m for Saint Kitts and Nevis. The 30-year-old has tasted team success at the highest level, winning World Championships bronze back in 2011 in the men’s 4x100m relay. He is in the form of his life at the moment, matching his personal-best mark from 2013 which puts him, along with Antigua and Barbuda’s Cejhae Greene, among the 20 fastest men in the field. (Greene has been a hundredth of a second faster than Rogers this year.) Rogers will be joined in Tokyo by Amya Clarke for the women’s 100m and by swimmer Jennifer Harding-Marlin, who is entered for the women’s 100m backstroke."

Was telling my parents the same thing. Twice the authorities at Wembley allowed the stadium to exceed the specified attendance limit of 45,000. And the UK has not seen the result of that. But by next week we'll see it. And their infection rate is increasing by leeps and bounds. Does not make the Tokyo olympics safe though. But i agree with you.

I see St. Kitts and was surprised Kim Collins wasn't on the roster. Now that fella had longevity.

mikesiva 2021-07-21 08:54:10

In reply to Jumpstart

Totally agree with you on that. The UK are now feeling the impact of the football Euros coronavirus superspreader event, with about 50,000 new cases a day, and 96 died yesterday. What's slightly better for Tokyo though, is that spectators are banned, so we'll see how that pans out.

And talking about football, Olympic football starts today, with women's teams in action.

GB beat Chile 2-0
Japan and Canada draw 1-1
Brazil beat China 5-0
Sweden beat the USA 3-0!!!

From the Stabroek link....

"Greene, meanwhile, will be joined by Joella Lloyd for the women’s 100m, and Jalese Gordon in women’s laser radial. When Gordon hits the water, it will mark Antigua and Barbuda’s return to the sport for the first time in two decades. Alston Ryan will also be the only boxer from the OECS, and he will be the first entered by Antigua and Barbuda since 1988. Ryan, a featherweight, secured a place based on the IOC’s Boxing Task Force Rankings for the Americas. Antigua and Barbuda will also have two swimmers – Noah Mascoll-Gomes in men’s 400m freestyle, and Samantha Roberts in women’s 50m freestyle."

"Saint Vincent and the Grenadines will benefit from three universality places. Shafiqua Maloney will be on track in the women’s 800m. Alex Joachim will attempt the men’s 100m freestyle and Mya de Freitas the women’s 200m freestyle."

Men's football today....

I won't panic if I was part of the US mem basketball team. At some stage the winning streakk had to end. It's was a 25 game winning streak. You not going to win every basketball game in history.

They just have to refocus and win the rest of their games in Tokyo

Huh? Dude, what are you on about? Jamaicans knew what was up when Bolt was set to retire. Nuff were hoping he'd delay the retirement. I'm sure you know why that is.

Jamaicans expect to always be there or thereabouts in T&F, not win all the time.

Stop being melodramatic. The only ones who need to heed the lessons are the Americans. Why yu think dem did gwaan suh when tiny Jamaica started to beat them consistently? Yu see dat one named Carla Lewis?

Recognizing Elaine's achievement, bigging up Shericka for her performance, telling all Jamaicans to unite and enjoy the 1 2 3..but to take it easy with the pot and pot covers! DWL!

Of course she first gave thanks to the Almighty for bringing her where she is today. She admitted her disappointment but said she will not look for an excuse.

She ended by thanking her family, her support system and thanked her sponsors Grace, Digicel, Nike and Visa.

I haven't followed the European circuit at all since 2019.
But Jacobs did what he had to do and all credit to him. Can't recall the last
time an Italian win any races since Mennea back in the day 200m runner.

Bolt has left a void in sprints but had De Grasse got a start and Hughes not DQ
this race could have been different.
But congrats to the big guy,Jacobs. Should be fun for the the next few years to see
who really emerges as the top man. It's an open field which makes it good for Track events.

mikesiva 2021-08-02 09:31:56

In reply to hubert

Elaine was cruising and saving energy.

Maybe Shericka was doing the same? But something looked wrong with her. Possibly carrying an injury? Or just dog-tired from a busier sprint schedule that she's accustomed to?

100m hurdles final

1 PUR CAMACHO-QUINN Jasmine 12.37
2 USA HARRISON Kendra 12.52
3 JAM TAPPER Megan 12.55
4 NGR AMUSAN Tobi 12.60
5 NED VISSER Nadine 12.73
6 BAH CHARLTON Devynne 12.74
7 USA CUNNINGHAM Gabriele 13.01
8 JAM ANDERSON Britany 13.24

What a run by Camacho Quinn! And congrats to Tapper on her bronze....

Tapper is such a joy to watch! The way she celebrated that bronze was beautiful.

Sorry about Shericka..Rather it be weariness than injury which would decimate relay chances, That's one tough cookie of
female athlete. Expected Elaine and Shelly to cruise anyhow and qualify.

hotarobin 2021-08-02 10:24:17

these Olympics certainly have had it's share of unexpected outcomes..Shericka did not qualify..cha

In reply to hotarobin

Gwenerally thye Americans do not appear sharp. As are other atheltes though it is more evident with numerous Americans.
At this stage I am willing to give athletes a pass as this is an unusual year, a 5th year Olympics and Covid.
Usually, American top runners make use the European Circuit during the summer but I don't think this was a case in Covid year
with travel and its restrictiveness.
Apart from US Trials and the NCAA earlier,Athletes in US does not have anything to compare with a domestic circuit
as with Europe. Perhaps this explains in part to the emergence of Jacobs as 100m main man, whereas Brummel and other US
sprinters looked jaded and appear to wear 'what I am doing here' looks . Un American for sure.;
I foster this as not to make excuses as all athletee face similar problems.BUT Covid and its variants
affect people differently.
I see the Schippers did not make it for 200m final..just another one that has fallen unexpectedly.
Yes, I am prepared to give Athletes much more slack this time around.

I wonder if Thomas is playing possum or if she is really in tip top frame of mind for the 200M women's final ?

After the 100m, the first of 10 events, where he clocked 10.67, Victor was eighth with 935 points.

In the long jump, Victor cleared 7.24 for 16th place and 871 points. As a result, he slipped to 11th overall with with 1806 points.

In the shot putt, Victor threw 15.39 to finish third with 814 points. That put him sixth overall after three events with 2620 points.

The US has underperformed in Athletics this Olympics. And this will impact to overall Olympics medal table as they battle China for the top

Ewart 2021-08-04 14:41:10

The two Canadian finalists, Andre DeGrasse and Aaron Brown, established a high standard of decorum throughout, and demonstrated how great athletes should behave. Never puffed up their chests, or proclaimed they were the greatest.

What shone through the whole time was their grace and humility, and the consciousness that we are all only humans.

The Chinese are so facting uncouth. Just look at the behavior of these women. redface

South Korea's badminton authority is complaining because China's players kept yelling 'f---' at the Olympics

Chen and teammate Jia Yifan lost the first set to Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong. At 1-0 down, Chen first said the word, roughly equivalent to "f---" in English.

The Chinese doubles then mounted a comeback and win the match two sets to one. But for every point won in the successful second and third sets, both Chen and Jia would celebrate by shouting "f---."

Whether necessary or not, the language may have helped China as it stormed all the way to the final and won the silver medal on Monday, August 2.

I just dont want to think about it as I thought Burchell had a caused a zone violation too, witout Shericka probably would be out.
.Phew. The Swiss and German left it all out there when they had their places locked. I enjoyed it but I was impressed
with their baton changes..their team clicked beautifully. They could be a threat for medal too with such efficiency as this
is very key if we ..we'll see .

not sure they can do better. the edwin allen class 2 girls could probably beat them. actually i am sure they would. TTO did 43.62, the Edwin Allen girls did 43.73. i am sure the clayton sisters would chase them down.

i would have preferred lane 7, but 8 is way better than one of the tight inside lanes...we should consider ourselves lucky.. Franno foresaw a disaster.. i am hoping that between Kemba, Akeera nugent,Kevona and Ashanti Moore, at least one of them becomes world class by next year

Not really surprised..the whole squad seem to be shock from yesterday so where teamwork is concerned ,they were not
ready.

They are looking for Holloway to give them some inspiration right now..too late tho no matter what he does.
This is a Banner event for the USA and they are OUT. ah well.

We were talking about that peculiar scheduling with that with the 400m and the 4x400 m relays.
Was a huge oversight or error but corrected.

Checked in just time to see the girls qualify..A medal should re when the other girls fortify
for a much stronger quartet..Could be gold.I hope.
The men shocked the heck out of me in the 400m sprint relay.. so too the USA who continue to
go the way of the cow's tail. They obviously were not well prepared as per usual for these GAMES
but like Arnold ,'they will be back'. Three years is not too far away.
I give a pass to athletes this time around..living in a Covid world and all.
Never expected 2 medals in the men;s High hurdles but Parchie bust my Glad Bag.

we can do it..that would be a huge unexpected medal to add to the medal table..that would be pandemonium...we have the fastest qualifying time, the US is out and the other teams all used their A team.

you are correct..the US cant lose the 4 x4. Ross looks shot, but they have Norman and Cherry to bring in and they can use Benjamin

sometimes you gotta laugh.. who doubts the quality of Shaunae? maybe stevie wwonder. she is the defending champ.. 400/200 doubles are tough..thats why they are hard to do... as you said , i hope the 200 took something out of her to give Steph a chance to win. Black green and gold first. no ifs and or buts.

Who is gonna beat Shaunae at 400? Naser is banned, and the bronze medallist Sherika is now running sprints.

in regards to relay order, you will notice the italians used the 100m winner on the backstretch. US always did with Gatlin, so using Elaine there isnt "odd". just not what i would do...if you watch her, she is not comfortable with baton changes.. but there was so much raw s[peed there...

TriniStar 2021-08-06 14:34:45

As bad as an Olympics America is having in Athletics I will be most surprised if they don't win that women 4x400 final.

I am reading online a star studded line up of Athing Mu - Mohammed - Mcglaughlin - Felix

Buy Felix just ran today. That could be an issue

That has always, always a given. Soo too the men, when was the last time a US team lost a 4x4 at a world event. Ewart told you when already

TriniStar 2021-08-06 14:45:43

In reply to Brerzerk

At a world event? Didn't the US 4x400 men lost at 2017 world champs? That is recent

Brerzerk 2021-08-06 14:54:26

In reply to TriniStar
Re-read what I wrote. The question is rhetorical by the way, and' if you read what came next you will see I am not just pointing out an anomaly. The US losing any of these 4x4 would be what is strange, winning wouldn't be a surprise. Use the same stats formula you attempted in the other post and see what conclusion you'd draw.

nitro 2021-08-06 14:56:26

Just heard that Steph McPherson picked up a hamstring injury mid race of the 400M. Sad.

JahJah 2021-08-06 14:59:32

Canada wins the women's football Gold with 3 Jamaican-Canadians. Might all be 4. Lemme check.

The one with the surname Rose came up clutch to extend the shoot out into sudden death.

TriniStar 2021-08-06 15:05:41

In reply to Brerzerk

I don't disagree with the premise of what you saying. Was just answering your question about the US men 4x400 and when last they lost

The expectation by many is the US will win both men and women 4x4 in the finals. The women especially given the line up which consist of several Olympic Champions. we talking about Mcglaughlin, Athing Mu, Mohammed and Felix al in the same team.

But those are just expectations anything can still happen. Me personally will not be surprised if the US men 4x400 don't win. I am not confident in Norman and the other young US male sprinters showing up when it matters the most but we shall see. Poland and Botswana I can tell are hungry to win.

she was inconsolable. the pics on the jamaican website say it all. the disappointment is real. the other USA lady and McLeod were trying to console and help her off

nitro 2021-08-06 15:16:55

I was a bit puzzled as her time in the semis was much better.

That is a blow to the female 4x4 as well. Can Shericka Jackson be added?

yes, but she is not a machine.. she ran today. it takes something out of you to run. they can use her or the 400 hurdlers.

Jumpstart 2021-08-06 15:41:46

In reply to TriniStar

It is. I think their team will be stronger though. We'll really have to bring our A+ game if we want to beat them again. Not that TTO can't do it. Of the 4 races the teams have contested between 2017 and 2019, we wo two of them. Would have won at the Pan Am games too but Zambrano of Colombia was the anchor there and his kick at the end is spectacular. Its also really disconcerting if he's coming behind you. I think that affected our team. But Colombia not in de final. It will be a good race and Cedenio and co will leave their best performance on the track.

So Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland at the Olympics?

Tryangle 2021-08-06 17:55:04

In reply to nitro

Not Northern Ireland... not sure if it was deliberate or a quirk, but people from Northern Ireland can compete for Ireland, apparently.

And technically, any athletes from Anguilla, T&C, Falklands, could only compete for Britain as those places don't have NOCs. Rule Britannia and all that, eh.

Me too.

We have a good future. Briana's star is rising as Shelly-Ann enters her twilight. I love that first leg.

And in Taylor and Seville we have some good people with more than ordinary promise.

If Taylor can find a way to suppress/defeat his asthma, his rising sun will shine gloriously, and not only in the 400. And I don't have any fears for Seville whose calm determination and fluent speed will take him far.

Yes . Just returned from molding and watering them too.I usually still reaping in October. When I plant the ones
from Jamaica I am reaping into November if the weather not bad in Philly.
Started late this season in June.Had to wait for clearance from my Doctor
to do my gardening. Gungo just start to blossom big..
Did not do my Chards,Kale,Collard Greens or Peppers this season. Those with Beet, cucumbers and my Gungo are my MUSTS.
Reaped okra and Beet, tomoato and calaloo and today.
Been eating well along with Salmon and other fish.

Thanks my friend..been eating well.
Yes our Caribbean athletes deserve a Big Up..Its been a tough year and they have less resources
than the Big countries to deal with adversity. They did better than most in the circumstances than
some big countries. Even those who were medal lest did well in making many finals..no mean feat either.
Proud of them and Bahamas continue to amaze with Miller-Ubio.
Wonderful.

Great. Nothing beats eating and enjoying what you grow.Such a wonderful hobby too.
Has been my passion since about 8 years old. Some of us just love to watch things grow
and enjoy and share the fruits.( I even have a calaloo plant at home hidden in the boss's flower bed.Thats for seeds for next season)
She just found out but she eased me up this time big grin big grin big grin big grin big grin

My friends and family are all over wanting calaloo. Shipped to friends in Arizona last week and
will be shipping to my daughter who has left Texas Tech for the Detroit Lions NFL organization since June.
I never shared that info before JESSICA GRAY – CO-DIRECTOR OF PLAYER ENGAGEMENT.
But Women are making great strides in once male dominated areas in the USA. And that is a great thing.

Is that gungo peas,cajanus cajan

always say I would try it here in NJ,are you in PA?

Never knew the value of beet until about five years ago. It has become one of my MUSTS since then.
I cook it in virtually eveything when possible but juicing is the thing..leaves and all..
The juice with some ginger alone. Then with a mixture of carrots ..but always with ginger.I
have seen the benefits and I grow organically which makes it even better.

My MUSTS include Kale,Swiss Chards,Collard Greens, gungo ,Beans, cucumbers Beet, peppers(Scot bonnet or Trinidad Scorpion)
in a 1 square chain garden. My other garden of half that size in a different location is solely for the Calaloo.

But if I have to reduce activity as I have to this season, Beet is my number 1, with calaloo as tjhe next MUST as I make
a few shekels which pay for everything from it and share half with friends of which I have a gradual increase each season..

lol lol

thanks to you and cricketmad. what you wrote is the exact advice i got a few days ago...beet, carrot and a piece of ginger. some one had recommended tumeric tea, but i hated the taste.

also realizing the value of coconut water... all this time i thought it was just a chaser for my Appleton.

Yes, In Philadelphia. It will do very well in South Jersey ;places such as Camden or Cherry Hill.
It is grown in the South..they know it as pigeon peas in the Carolinas and of course we get the supply from Puerto Rico.I bought some in a store
and tried it but it is not like the Jamaican variety but it will grow well..
I am trying the ones from Puerto Rico which I bought in a store. So I will see.

Being unable to plant last year was a big let down for me as seeds from 2019 from my Jamaica variety went bad and although there was
ratoon growth in the field, the two guys who used the field ,only reaped and told me they had a lot..but did not
save seeds..the two brothers.. are real fun tho. But I know who I can source some from tho.
But give it a try and start it in April/or by earth Day in NJ and you should get some result.
Got to keep a nice mound and water well too.

The good thing is that Jamaica has some wonderful coaches who know what it takes to being on the
talent..Taylor,Briana and Seville are three that could do great things in three years. The task
will be hard.
Just hope Taylor can overcome that challenging health issue. He is a wonderful talent
and I like his positive attitude too.I am sure others will come to the forefront on the men's side.
Those twin sisters that made an impact at Champs,(Williams ?) seem to have the talent too to step up.

Third dude was injured......look like he was injured before the race because he started running slow. If he was really injured before, then he should have said something. We had alternates who I'm sure would have been race ready for an eventuality like this.
We were in 2nd place before he took over. To be fair though, Ato did say we wasn't getting anything from early last month eh

Yes. That's the duo .Twins I believe..They got the right attitude to competitiveness.Hope the
right personnel is involved to nurture them.

As for coconut water..to me its the purest water, nicely distilled naturally.Used to be my chaser for my Appleton white ,too.
way back when. Only strong mixture that gave no hangover .

Can't even smell that stuff now

So I was bigging up San Marino for getting their first medal of any sort the other day and setting a mark for smallest nation to win a medal...

Turned out they pulled two more!

3 total medals for such a small nation. Incredible.
