All-time WI test XI

trev114 2021-07-27 22:40:35

per Wisden

Who would open?

Fivestar 2021-07-28 04:56:37

In reply to trev114

The Wisden team will create some discussion but to be fair they did lay out their criteria. Incidentally, their all-time Windies eleven is not much different from mine. I have two openers, Hunte and Greenidge, which means I would leave out Weekes and Chanderpaul. Also, I prefer Holding over Hall.

1. Hunte
2. Greenidge
3. Headley
4. Lara
5. Richards (captain)
6. Sobers
7. Walcott
8. Marshall
9. Ambrose
10.Holding
11.Gibbs

I know it's late at night but Wisden selected five specialist batsmen in Headley, Richards, Lara, Weekes and Chanderpaul but no openers.

I selected five specialist batsmen in Hunte, Greenidge, Headley, Lara and Richards which includes two openers.

I guess in your eyes that makes me a "dunce." You know, maybe I should drink the Kool-Aid so you guys stop calling me names.lol lol lol

The only change to your team is, Greenidge for Rohan.
Base on position
Rohan may had opened a few times, but you have to give Jack his jacket.
Gordon Greenidge is the #1 opener, in the history of West Indies cricket.

Hunte has been the best opening bat in WI cricket.

Conrad Hunte for Haynes. Worrell is non playing skipper Lloyd his deputy

Massy 2021-07-28 23:43:05

Worrell the greatest co captain with Lloyd but I was thought to pick your team first ; then select a captain and not the other way round .
Sad to leave out both Worrell and Lloyd two great batsmen and great cricket strategists too ,beyond comparable in WI cricket history.

Naming an all time XI is and will always be debatable so I respect your opinion. However facts are indisputable and there are two here:
Kanhai only opened a few times? He practically opened his entire career, check the score each time he went to the crease.
Conrad Hunte is the greatest WI opener bar none. Greenidge was very talented but he was not in Hunte's league. There was Hunte, daylight, and then the next WI opener.
QED

I agreed with you 100 %, they said he could have walked into any WI team , but they kept him out until 24 years, he made his bim debut at age 18.

spider 2021-07-29 19:17:45

In reply to Yadi

Not bad. I read that Walcott was a decent keeper in his prime and was a better batsman than Dujon. I could go with Kanhai as opener rather than Headley but Headley might have been steadier at the top, a little less flamboyant than Kanhai.

Jumpstart 2021-07-29 19:54:38

Wisden made that list. Generally, they only use statistics when making an argument. To me when you use stats as your only criterion, then you immediately make your argument irrelevant. As great as Lance Gibbs was(he was the first truly great spin bowler), any test side, without Joel Garner, who averages 20.97 in tests and a strike rate of 50.80, then you don't have a west indian greatest xi.

my xi
Greenidge
Kanhai
Headley
Lara
Viv
Sobers
Dujon
Marshall....don't need a spinner with Maco in the side
Ambrose
Holding
Garner

Some people feel that all pace lacks subtlety, but cricket is about winning matches and this side could slaughter aby team in history

As an educator, I am shocked to see the lack of thinking in selecting an all West Indies test team.
Any team selection, should be name by positions played overtime.
I am shocked to see you just put a number of great batsman on a team, and just putting two of them to open.
Thats not how any team was selected when you lived in Jamaica, and that's not how teams are selected 50 years later, you living in New York.

Rohan was one of our greats, by his position on an All-time team should be compared to Headley, Weekes, Richards and Lara.

You got it right. Not much argument here.I can tell you go back awhile. An old timer like me?.I was thinking Rohan Kanhai picked. But that will do.

hubert 2021-07-30 10:53:36

In reply to openning

I agree with you big time although Rohan remains a top 6 batsman in the history of West Indies crickret.
But Opener, ,,, No. Why not Worrell then.. he had a some success as opener...so did Rowe and and both could bat.
Rohan failed as an opener. Not credible./.See others also naming Headley as opener. or not at all....People are entitled to their
opinion but should also exercise some sense and credibility.

And these same people oastigate SELECTORS at will...WOW.
Although I prefer Fredericks as oipener over Greenidge to partner Hunte, I have to include Gordon C as the one.
For one thing..how many WI openers is an immortal ? or how many have multiple Double Tons.? And a higher average than most, even wonderful
middle order specialists. ?
Give me a brain..

big grin

Oh yes, cricket, lovely cricket, that game of glorious uncertainties. Who would have thought Wisden, the bible of cricket, would commit such a cardinal sin. They chose an all-time West Indies eleven with no openers.

spider 2021-07-30 14:32:44

I happen to believe that Richrds is a much better batsman than Greenidge and would make more runs as opener were he placed in that position. Plus Richards batted at three for a long time which can't be that different than opening. If a wicket falls first ball, for instance, he'd be essentially opening the batting. Richards also opened on a few occasions.

As for Headley you could almost say he opened the batting as he was often had to go in very early in the innings. He himself complained that he had to be ready to go in early because of the unreliability of the openers.

in the peerless Michael Holding view Greenidge was the better bat. Richards personality clip Greenidge in Holding view

Point me to where Holding said that. Not that if Holding say it I would believe it but I doubt he said that.

In the peerless Michael Holding view Greenidge was the better bat.

Michael Holding has stated publicly on numerous occasions the best player of fast bowling he ever saw was Viv Richards.

Raisedseam 2021-07-30 15:20:45

In reply to spider

Fast bowling icon Michael Holding believes only the sheer genius of Sir Vivian Richards prevented Gordon Greenidge from becoming the quintessential batsman of his generation.

Holding, who played alongside the legendary opener, said there was never any doubt about the Barbadian’s immense status.

“Gordon was a great player,” Holding said on the popular cricket radio show, Mason and Guest.

.“If it hadn’t been for Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, everyone would’ve been talking about Gordon Greenidge.”

close enough lol lol razz

Alec Bedser told me that the only modern cricketer to play anything like Sir Donald Bradman was Greenidge. "He moves his feet the same way and pulls balls so full that you 'ave to bowl them fuller and then he drives you down the ground. Bloody good he is." Ted Dexter reckons Greenidge the best right-hander, technically, that he has seen. And he saw Len Hutton, Geoff Boycott, Barry Richards, Greg Chappell, Martin Crowe, Rahul Dravid and Tendulkar.
likkle more

spider 2021-07-30 17:13:36

Not even close. No doubt that Holding regards Viv as the best, especially to fast bowling. And everyone knows Greenidge's technique was superior to most others.

So answer me this: If you had to choose between Greenidge and Richards to open the innings you'd choose Greenidge? Richards came in at three for a long time and who was one of the best players of fast bowling ever.

You said Viv batted at #3 during his career, now its time to name an all-star team during his retirement, you moved him from the position he occupied, to one he rarely batted.
BTW, Viv and my wife are first cousin.
Naming an all-time team, is putting a player in the position batted before retirement.
You seem to think the All time team will be playing T20 cricket, so let Viv open.
