Djokovic to Biles: Pressure is a Privilege

Casper 2021-07-29 09:09:09

Explains why he would never get anyone's sympathy vote, G.O.A.T or not.

When asked about Biles raising the issue of mental health in sport and the pressure he is currently facing as he attempts to win the Golden Slam, Djokovic replied: ‘Pressure is a privilege, my friend. Without pressure there is no professional sport.

‘If you are aiming to be at the top of the game you better start learning how to deal with pressure and how to cope with those moments – on the court but also off the court.

You are overdoing it. He did not belittle anybody he acknowledged there is pressure and how he has been able to deal with it overtime

dayne 2021-07-29 10:44:41

Pier Morgan had an opinion also about the matter, he said that Biles's behavior was ' cowardly and gutless ' . In the pass days many people would say the same, but apparently Naomi has started a trend. All great achievements were accomplished with the people involved, having to deal with stress.

I read it the same way as well. He even spoke about his past battles and failures. He didn’t belittle anyone and their struggles. He was speaking about himself

Yes Morgan is harsh and at times crude in his use of words, but what Biles is being excused for in this period of time would not have gone down well a few years ago

Agreed in full.

Casper 2021-07-29 12:42:13

You all have it wrong, just like Djokovic did in an unsympathetic response to a specific question about Biles' situation. He turned it into a question about himself while implying Biles had to learn how to deal with pressure. Biles is not succumbing to pressure, she has always dealt with pressure.

Biles has experienced something in Japan which is unique to gymnasts, it's called the "twisties". Understand what it is here.

So what are the "twisties"?

Gymnasts have described the twisties as a kind of mental block.

In some sports a sudden mental block - like the "yips" in golf - may cost you a missed putt, or a lost game.

In gymnastics, it can cause a person to lose their sense of space and dimension as they're in the air, causing them to lose control of their body and do extra twists or flips that they hadn't intended. In the worst cases, they can find themselves suddenly unable to land safely.

The twisties can happen to a gymnast even if they've done the same manoeuvre for years without problems.

A gymnast being defying gravity as part of her performance is vastly different from a tennis player losing confidence in a high pressure tennis match

Biles was expected to bring home gold using one patented moves, which she has perfected. It's called the Yurchenko

Read in her own words how she experienced the twisties while intending to do the Yurchenko, and it has changed the whole Olympics.

Simone Biles said she got the ‘twisties.’ Gymnasts immediately understood Djokovic and many of you do not understand.

Imagine flying through the air, springing off a piece of equipment as you prepare to flip on one axis while twisting on another. It all happens fast, so there’s little time to adjust. You rely on muscle memory, trusting that it will work out because, with so much practice, it usually does.

But then suddenly you’re upside down in midair and your brain feels disconnected from your body. Your limbs that usually control how much you spin have stopped listening, and you feel lost. You hope all the years you spent in this sport will guide your body to a safe landing position.

When Simone Biles pushed off the vaulting table Tuesday, she entered that terrifying world of uncertainty. In the Olympic team final, Biles planned to perform a 2½-twisting vault, but her mind chose to stall after just 1½ twists.

“I had no idea where I was in the air,” Biles said. “I could have hurt myself.”

nitro 2021-07-29 13:07:41

In reply to Casper

I see nothing wrong with his response. Pressure at the very top is a privilege.

If you want to be the best you have to face and manage the stress.

Biles did great under pressure before so what has changed?

There seems to be one common factor with Biles and Osaka's recent melt down. They both started dating seriously lately. Lack of Focus due to Buddy?

Thats good when you are playing singles, what happens if he is going into a doubles match, and something continue to go wrong in practice, nothing seem to work, will he let his partner down, by going through the motion?

In reply to Casper

Everybody experiences the ' Twisties ' at some time of their sporting life and also in their regular life period, it's how they handle it that determines what type of person they are.

Casper 2021-07-29 19:05:53

In reply to dayne

You still haven't grasped what the "Twisties" are all about in relation to gymnastics.

So let put it here again:

In gymnastics, it can cause a person to lose their sense of space and dimension as they're in the air, causing them to lose control of their body and do extra twists or flips that they hadn't intended. In the worst cases, they can find themselves suddenly unable to land safely
. This is what Biles, experienced on her first outing at the Tokyo Olympics, which caused fear of hurting herself if she were to try to do her special routine the gymnastic world was expecting her to perform.

Now, does pressure cause the "twisties"? You tell me.

Does pressure cause a golfer to get the "yips"? Again, you tell me.

In both cases do you "suck it up" and perform?

Ayenmol 2021-07-29 19:23:17

In reply to Casper

Agreed. Some of these sports require uncanny focus or you risk serious injury.

Some associate this with Osaka.....Osaka brought scrutiny on herself by wanting special treatment so she could have her cake and eat it too.

Biles has not done this, she simply withdrew because of her mental health.

I will say this, some of these athletes take endorsements all over the place which adds pressure on them and also takes alot of time to shoot, taking them away from the mental and physical preparation they need.

That needs to be considered also.

POINT 2021-07-29 19:24:38

In reply to Casper

I am in total agreement with what You have stated . Djokovic has never been a
Gymnast so :

HE NEEDED TO SHUT THE HELL UP !!!!!!

IN HIS SPORT TENNIS , HIS FEET ARE

NOT IN MID AIR , THEY ARE GENERALLY

ON THE GROUND . WHEN THEY ARE NOT

ON THE GROUND THEY ARE INCHES FROM

THE GROUND .

My take is that those rotations in the Air , and also twisting her Body
can, at some point , be dangerous to those who are competing in Gymnastics.

DJOKOVIC SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF MAKING

SUCH AN ASSININE COMMENT .

dayne 2021-07-29 19:32:45

In reply to Ayenmol

So using your example of ' twisties and yips ', suppose the WI opening batsmen withdraw from a Test match against Australia, because mentally they are not in the right mental state to face bouncers from Starc, equally as dangerous as having the 'twisties', what would be your opinion of them?

Ayenmol 2021-07-29 19:33:49

In reply to POINT

Some might say that being a gymnast, he has every right to speak.....

People have a right to speak from their experiences....he is right, to make it today in the current sport landscape one needs a certain level of toughness....not machismo, but the ability to push oneself and not be adversely affected by the constant negativity and scrutiny.......but it does exist that some people are adversely affected and if Biles is one of these people then she should be respected for taking the time to address it rather than hurt herself.

Ayenmol 2021-07-29 19:44:59

In reply to dayne

My opinion i would be that the team would need to properly assess their mental ability to be on the team......i personally would not have input....

A player who has been selected to the Windies team would have undoubtedly faced pace and handled it to have reached that level, so if he is now unable to handle it then he needs to be evaluated and treated with dignity.
he should be commended for leaving the team and seeking help rather than going out there under pressure and giving up his wicket cheaply .

If this was something that was better understood many Police officers who have the 'yips' as you put it would seek help rather than be protected when they face mental health issues and put the lives of fellow officers and the Public in jeopardy.

Kerri Strugg did it with a broken foot in '96. Mental toughness is an ingredient to be GOAT. Biles shows she is great but cannot now be considered GOAT. She is a quitter.

Ayenmol 2021-07-29 20:21:45

In reply to nitro

You need to learn the difference between mental and physical toughness.

There are people who are physically tough but cannot handle emotional stress worth a darn.....just because you need to make a mental decision to fight through a physical issue does not make you mentally tough.

besides, we have no idea what is this mental issue she speaks of.....

Casper 2021-07-29 20:32:25

In reply to nitro

But, Kerri Strugg did not have the "twisties". You still don't understand the concept of "twisties". I'll give another shot at understanding what it is.

If there were something equivalent to a batsman in cricket, he would not know his relationship to the short ball, whether to shift his head or even raise his bat to fend off the ball. His only hope would be if the ball missed his head. Under such conditions, he should not be playing, as he would not only be a liability to the team but, more importantly, a danger to himself

That's why I called into question Djokovic's response to the question about Simone Biles. It was more than being able to live with pressure. So many of the responders to this post seem to miss the point just as Djokovic did.

So was it a mental problem that brought about the "twisties" or is it Djokovic's idea of "pressure"?

Whatever it was, she did the right thing to withdraw, until whenever she gets her head in the right space to perform such extremely dangerous moves.

I do understand. I was just pulling POINT's leg.

regarding the short ball, players such James Adams were never the same after getting hit in the head.
I think even the great Lara struggled with the short ball after Akhtar knocked him out.

FuzzyWuzzy 2021-07-29 21:34:28

In reply to Casper

What Djokovic was relating to was in 2016 after winning RG and seemingly on the way to a GS he had mental issues that saw him getting beat in Wimbledon in early rounds and beaten again in the Olympics in Rio

He had a crisis of confidence and contemplated giving up tennis. So he certainly can relate to what simone is going through. I don't think he was criticizing her, just relating his own struggles. That he has overcome means simone too can overcome after a little time away. So too Naomi.

You are too eager to turn Djokovic into a villain but we know why.

"Mental issues" appear to be a modern day problem for modern day Prima Donnas, not saying she was one.

In my opinion Her Physical & Mental Being is a Hell of a Lot more important
than winning a Medal .

Possibly the surroundings in Japan ,
by that I mean , Ceilings etc , are
different than what she is accustomed
seeing while going through her Routines
and that affected her both Mentality
and Physically .

It also has not lost in my mind , the
fact that She is a Black young woman
at the pinnacle of Gymnastics . I cite this to state that I believe that there is a Tinge of Racism coming from those who are critical of Her .

Djokovic can say anything he wants when the most that can happen to him in his sport is a sprained ankle of his back hand shot stop working. Lets see how he feels balancing on a 6 inch beam while flipping upside down backwards to land on 2 feet. He could at least appreciate the difference in handling pressure in gymnastics as compared to his sport of choice.

Brerzerk 2021-07-30 04:23:41

If that's all he said he is at least insensitive to both the dangers of physical n mental health. If your mental state causes you to err and land on back instead of feet that's broken back and worse mental health issue from self-blame. As to the other one, Why do we listen to a boorish Oaf not smart enough to understand that having only played primary school cricket 30yrs.ago is no qualification to face a current world class pacer? And, one who wilts in a debate with the weatherman on his own show.

It's amazing to see the love Biles is getting despite the racist attacks (mostly through ignorance, of course) from certain people, especially on the Right.

Adriano, meanwhile, has been vocal about his struggles with alcoholism and depression during his time as a player and has hit out at the criticism directed at Biles over her decision to withdraw.

Exactly - And as TriniD said on another thread, TriniD won't question the mental toughness of a woman who had been sexually assaulted by a team doctor, and still continued to go out and performed with dat trauma. In fact, one of de reasons she is still in de sport is to continue to shine a light on this issue.

Times change. De way we look at toughness in terms of mental health is toxic and destructive. If Simone had continued, she could have seriously hurt herself and her team.

Kerry Strugg's father said dat Kerry was done with gymnastics at age 18 after dat famous vault with a fugged-up ankle. Her coach pushed her and others on their team, and drove dem into early retirement.

TriniD is wid Simone. Take care of your health. Don't let these toxic, keyboard macho men, who can't do 1% of what you do, try tuh tell yuh what tuh do.

I haven't read the full thread but Joka does make a valid point with his big square head..part of being a champion is handling the pressure..full-stop!!

You think it was easy for Bolt to defend the Olympic titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m twice? yes he is fast like a bullet but there is always those looking to take away the glory..it's called competition..

Similarly It wasn't easy for Federer, Rafa nor Joka..Joka has grounds to talk because he has the titles to qualify his comments..

I ain't no Joka fan but when de man right he right..

Well,do you care to comment on the above?

I have already said I don't think Djokovic was dissing Simone but was relating his own struggles with pressure. Wunnuh forget how Roger Federer and Andy Roddick call him a quitter in his early years?

Now I personally felt Djokovic got out over his skis, as the Americans say. He became cocky after Wimbledon and behaved like the golden and grand slams were ordained. He even defied his team management and played mixed doubles though they knew he was exhausted after RG and Wimbledon.

Now he is facing the same crisis of confidence as he faced in 2016 after winning his first RG. We shall see if the GS is still achieved.
