Toss delayed due to rain
10:38 local: We should have had toss by now, but unfortunately it has started to rain which is causing the delay. The entire square is under covers now.

The umpires have had the inspection and the captains seem almost ready for the toss. Okay, so the official word is: toss at 11:00 local, start at 11:15. No overs lost.

: The groundstaff are using ropes to remove water from the ground, and the Super sopper's out, too. The toss will take place in 10 minutes if no further rain, with the game to begin in 25
Earl Horatio Ma: "tired to hear the moniker, 'West Indies is a powerhouse batting team', yet in the previous series- SA, Aust now Pakistan they, are yet to pass 250 in any of the matches. Is this an indication for the test series?" 250?!! You've been watching the high jump at the Olympics too much judging by how high you've set the bar.
Mridul: "WI batting order should be likeHetmyer Lewis Gayle Pollard pooran ....this should be top 5....all are great strikers of the ball"
Osman Mazhar: "I am hoping Pakistan tries out something different with the batting order today, should try sending Sohaib "
Evin Lewis, who retired hurt yesterday with what was initially put down to cramps and later heat exhaustion, is practicing at the moment.

Kieron Pollard:
We gonna bat first. Yesterday there was moisture earlier and the second half it was keeping a bit low. Very pleasing about the bowling and for us we strive for consistency in everything we do. Just one change. A forced changed. Lewis misses out and Russell comes back in. That has been the niche so far. The guys have come in and out and some injuries and had to make some forced changes but having said that, we are willing to fight and we are willing to go the hard distance and hopefully we can do well today.

Babar Azam:
He (Hafeez) is very important for us, especially against left-handers he is very good. We struggled in the middle-order in the last few games but we are trying different combinations and I'm confident we will go well. We have one change today. Shaheen Afridi is out and Haris Rauf comes in for him.

Hafeez to Andre Fletcher, SIX, the no-look slog from Andre Fletcher! Smoked it out of the middle of the bat. Sits on one knee, picks the delivery on a fuller length and swats Hafeez into the deep mid-wicket stands for a mighty maximum...

11:22 local: It's bucketing down now. The rain returns and so do the covers on the square. The players rush back to the pavilion and there's still some time before we start losing overs. Hopefully we will return with a positive update, stay tuned...

Not about the result. Hafeez conceded six from his four overs yesterday, and goes for nine in his first today.

12:04 local: Live pictures show quite a few water puddles on the outfield as it continues to drizzle in Guyana. Just a very light drizzle. But the outfield was a proper lake 20 odd minutes ago with so much water and you could hardly see grass. Both Babar and Rizwan can be seen tiptoeing as they take a stroll across the ground now. It's looking pretty bad and will take some drying before we resume. Plenty of water on the covers too. More updates as and when we have it...

12:50 Local Time: The rain has stopped and the groundsmen are working on removing all the water. This will take a lot of doing. Umpires discuss and it's pretty admirable to see so much water disappear on the outfield. Tells you about the drainage. But there's quite a lot on the covers though. So they are carefully taking the sheets off.
14:22 is the cut off time for 5-over contest.

Thanks Danyal. Let's hope that at least a shortened game is around the corner.
hadi: "Daniyal makes me beleive in superstitions......sorry" --- That's sport after all. And with that, which of the cricketers' superstitions strike you immediately?
Ben: "Everyone with a sponge and a bucket who lives near the ground must get down there now! Cricket needs you!!" --- You've summed it all up, Ben!
"Any update?" --- None yet, Nasib. But we'll put one up the moment we have one.

Guyana would be the ideal place to 'inaugurate' the covered cricket stadium, and the resulting indoors cricket match. It would pay instant dividends.

1:40 pm: We have had some live pictures and there's nothing much to tell. The groundstaff are still removing the excess water off the covers and off the ground as well. The umpires are having a keen look, but we're fast running out of time. We have just a little over 40 minutes for play to start.

MATCH ABANDONED
The umpire's have had a good look, at the outfield, the bowler run-ups and the pitch. Now, they are talking to the two captains. Misbah-ul-Haq is present as well. The ground has drained well, but have we run out of time for a 5-over encounter? Phil Simmons joins in the conversation as well. Pollard is sporting a smile as he chats with Babar. They shake hands now and that means the game has been abandoned. We'll wait for the official word, so do the sizeable crowd at the Providence stadium and yes, the match has been officially called off

So todays match is abandoned and the players willl just be sitting around tomorrow. Cricket needs to do a better job of getting around the weather. I undersrand the constraints with test cricket, but this is a max 40 over, 3.5 hour game.

Whatever you guys say, I'm not going to retaliate and say something like Mickey did some years back, something to the effect that no cricket should be scheduled in the Mudland, because such matches just about always end in wash outs.
