HEADLINE: Findlay’s take on West Indies batting techniques

CaribbeanCricket.com 2021-09-06 13:33:08

In reaction to my column last week under the headline: “Techniques of West Indies batsmen debated”, Mike Findlay, the former St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Windward Islands, Combined Islands, and West Indies wicket-keeper, who was also chairman of the West Indies selection committee, had some pertinent written remarks to make in response.

Findlay wrote: “Consider this. The current West Indies team does not have a class batsman. The last such batsman we produced was Brian Lara, who also had support from Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle were good batsmen, but they were not in Lara’s class. Chanderpaul was reliable and stable. Gayle was aggressive power. On the other hand, Lara executed his strokes with finesse and elegance. His immense talent and sound technique enabled him to play every stroke in cricket and he did so with much ease and grace.

Any top team in International cricket requires at least three batsmen of the real class who will make runs consistently. If one fails there are at least two others who could be depended on to pull the team back on track.

At the moment, we do not have that quality in the West Indies team. We have a lot of form batsmen who can make runs when they are in good form and they are facing bowling which cannot challenge them by bowling very consistent line and length.

Your assessment that the problem arises from “poor technique” is very accurate. But much deeper than that one has to understand that a sound technique does not come overnight. It has to be part of one’s “DNA”.

Findlay dead wrong. We have Lil Bravo and Hetty. They are class batsmen and Blacks coming along nicely

VoopsandOut 2021-09-06 13:48:35

No, Findlay is dead right except that I would say that you only need one class batsman supported by a couple of international standard batsmen. That is why India, New Zealand, Australia and England can do well consistently but the rest of us struggle. WI does not even have international standard batsmen at this stage as we do not have anyone who can average even 35 in a series consistently.

Why? Are you saying that Lil Bravo and Hetty are not class batsmen and Blacks not coming along nicely?

Correct is right.

Whatever he told is the truth apart from Failara being a World Class batsman. He is a good batsman but not the worldclass.

Hola..
"""The last such batsman we produced was Brian Lara, who also had support from Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle were good batsmen, but they were not in Lara’s class.""

Why do we have such jokers writing and spewing shit???

Lara's so called class had him total 11953 test runs and classless Shiv finished at 11867..
Classless Gayle was at 7000 plus...
Does Findlay have any phucking idea what "CLASS is""

XDFIX 2021-09-06 15:53:55

He is dead wrong, human beings can adapt and change at any stage in their life cycle! I think Findlay is a bit doolally on this one!

Class batsmen consistently, & successfully exhibit strokeplay, including in difficult situations

I like the ideas expressed by Mr Findlay. Can he recall any of those old books that he read? Thanks.

What is supposedly a class batsman???Can you define or explain..
2 batsman at the crease ... one is called a batsman with class .. the other no class .. class batsman cover drive for 4 and then gets out.. the other batsman edges through slip for 4 and then gets out..Guess what??? Scorebook shows both scored 4 ....
Edges and classless counts

When Lara comes to the crease opposing cappo and bowlers say, “ shit, we must get him early”

When Shiv comes to the crease they say “ crap, not him again”

You are on the money... there is a huge difference in elegance and style... but when only a hundred runs separate Lara and Shiv then you have to conclude they are from the same school..

Scar 2021-09-07 03:05:58

Both Shiv and,Lara are class batsmen Findley was not a batsman of any type and I will leave it at that.

Commies, including WI ones, have described batsmen from Pak, India, SLetc. who bat like Shiv as 'class' but seem to stop short at that. Foreign comms have clearly stated that Shiv is a world class bat.

Let's leave the inability to appreciate Shiv to those who lack the ability to comprehend the difference between style/flair and class/performance.
