HEADLINE: ‘High-octane Windies squad built for excitement’ – but may not necessarily win World Cup

Former wicketkeeper-batsman, Deryck Murray, believes the Windies World Cup squad has been picked for maximum fireworks even if they do not go on to win the tournament.

The selection of the final team for the upcoming tournament has caused a torrent of discontent around the Caribbean, with strong opinions regarding which players should have be included or left out making the rounds.

Despite agreeing that leaving Holder out of the squad was a mistake, he believes the majority of the team was determined over the last three months and has been selected along the lines of a certain philosophy.

“You saw the team in various matches around and the Caribbean and you could see the pattern of players.  So, it was obvious that what the team has agreed to is what I call a very high-octane policy,” Murray told the Mason and Guest radio program.

If they pick a team to win and not think they can win then we will win. Pollard and Simmons need to work a careful strategy with who bowls when and how. Ravi if picked cannot bowl at the death. He needs all 4 up front.
Darren should not have been picked.
Open with Lewis with Gayle at 3
Chase or Pooran then Pollard, Russell,Allen,Bravo, Joseph, McCoy and Ravi.
If Gayle fails rthen Simmons comes in to open.

i think that Gayle has to open with Lewis. Chase is at 3. I agree that Ravi has to bowl all overs in first powerplay. I still think that we are a little short in the bowling department which makes batting first a problem for us.

Murray saw Octane Thomas in the squad

big grin

BTW I dont fully agree with Murray....This team will entertain but I believe this team can win the WC...we have experienced fire power.

I believe the team is balance, exciting, experienced and I wouldn't be surprised if we regain the trophy. Everybody is saying Holder should be picked but since he is an all rounder, who should they drop for Holder? Sure not Russell, Bravo or Pollard. The same people that saying Darren should not be picked because he has not done nothing, they should also realize that Holder had done nothing in T20. Fletcher is not my favorite player but which wicketkeeper/batsman did better? Which bowler bowled better than Rampaul? Ocean Thomas is not my favorite bowler but we need someone with some pace at times and since Gabriel is not available who then is better? Yes I like Smith, Shepherd, Drakes and others but they could only pick 17

I think Darren is just in the reserves and he is not going to be in the First XI.

My preferred XI would be

1. Evin Lewis
2. Chris Gayle
3. Shimron Hetmeyer
4.Roston Chase
5.Kieron Pollard
6. Nicholas Pooran
7. Andre Russell
8. Fabien Allen
9. Dwayne Bravo
10. Obed McCoy
11. Ravi Rampaul

Reserves and when they come into play

12. Lendl Simmons - Will replace Gayle if he fails or replaces any batsman if they want to keep him match ready.
13. Andre Fletcher - Same as Simmons
14. Hayden Walsh - If a second spinner is needed he will be in place of Obed or Ravi
15. Oshane Thomas - I would not expect him to feature in the 11 unless they want to play against the qualifiers just to keep him match ready.

unless they want to play against the qualifiers

We acting like whoever comes out of the qualifying phase not going to be dangerous. You can't let up one bit in this tourney unless you've already sealed qualification for the knockout phase.

The best XI has to play all games, with changes only made strategically (eg extra spinner or pacer)
