Chrissy- any truth to widespread cheating @UWI?

I have no official information but universities across the planet have seen massive increases in cheating since the pandemic started. These at home tests are not cheat proof.
Rumour has it that students have aps which facilitate the process.
The truth is that there are always students trying to cheat but we usually caught most of them. Word is that it is much harder during these trying times.

people i have spoken to say that it is widespread and that the pandemic has really brought it to light but it was ubiquitous on certain campuses.
there was always some past students to write course essays and end of course theses/ dissertations/ research papers, for a fee.
nowadays it is organised and offered on line

Yep - that's what I'm hearing

Chrissy can tell you thoughts not yet considered by the brain thrust behind WI cricket and have not a clue about what's going on at her work place. Sorry, I find that hard to accept, yet I could understand given the situation if she can't comment.

Huh? I retired several years ago

has UWI moved away from essay type questions, where you demonstrate understanding and not merely answer facts?
In reply to camos
Here's the problem - you're at home in your room doing the exam. You're using your lap top/tablet but you have a smart phone.
The question comes - you link di profiteers via di ap - you get di answer - you submit - who knows who wrote it?
Or you and some classmates who also attended the same high school link up on a chat board and work out the answers then you submit them. There is no one watching you - it is that easy.
I'm glad I'm not around for this madness. It was hard enough policing them pre Covid

Ok cheating at universities worldwide is NOT new. There are ways to catch it. Online is different. There is just no way to monitor.
Next who told you that UWI essays are just answering facts and not demonstrating understanding? I did my Bachelor's in Spanish and French, a Master's in Translation and a Master's in Education specializing in Curriculum Development and have yet to see an essay that just answers facts. How would you do that in Literature in the Modern Languages or in writing essays in Spanish or French or in Education which has various theoretical strands?
I also did some Accounts at undergrad level which required doing actual accounting and figuring out. At postgrad for the Translation Master's I had to do some undergrad Macro Econ and a government course on International and Regional Organisations. No essay there was a regurgitation of facts. You had to use what you knew and apply it to the questions. This is the SECOND time you have tried to imply that somehow UWI is some low level institution.STOP IT.IT IS NOT.

That is true about the pandemic and cheating increase. Some universities have a system in place where you are penalized if you are away from your computer for a certain period of time or there is no completed answer to a question within a certain set time. Cheating has always been part of the university experience. Some people are more adept at it than others, but the fear of being caught, expelled or "failed" helps to keep things in check. With the pandemic, however, the punishment is very severe at some institutions.

Oops! You retired? Ok me neva know.

Where there is an exam there is a cheat but nowadays cheating is endemic across the region especially among the so-called educated class

You have time - worry dem a worry ...foreign mind
most professional examination bodies have a requirement to have a camera on you at all times and the invigilator ..I believe that is how the the PMP certification is done..
In reply to hotarobin
professional organizations use testing vendors ,with well equipped facilities , where people pay $50 and up per test, universities can't do that when each student is at a different location doing the test at the same time.
In reply to camos
during lock down candidates were allowed to take the tests at home I believe..I am referring to that..
In mathematics and science, most of the cheats, though not all, are easily spotted when they return to on-ground classes.

Maybe the solution to the problem is to have presentation themed exams with a question and answer segment?
The only issue is the larger the class size the more impractical it becomes.

That's why I loved the tutorial set up. When a student who could barely string together a sentence (let alone an argument) suddenly presents a perfect essay, I start digging.
I even caught one who was brave enough to lift everything including subtitles
In reply to nick2020
That only works for some disciplines
In reply to Chrissy
True.
Covid brings with it so many challenges. I am sure we will have better solutions than having a drone in someone's bedroom.
In reply to sudden
Whatever cheating that is taking place at UWI, you can multiply by 10 to get the level of cheating at US Universities!!!!!
In reply to Dukes
and UK Unis, and 50 in Indian and Chinese Unis.
but that is no excuse is it?
In reply to nick2020
"Drones" is a a bit hyperbolic.
Why are they scated of turning on their cameras?
