Gary: TTPS lied to the nation when they denied that there is a spike in murders

Former Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith is refuting claims by the TTPS that the present murder rate is the same as for last year. He says that is a bold-faced lie and that this is one of the highest spikes we’ve seen in years. Details follow in this press release…..

In what can only be described as a deliberate attempt to hoodwink people on the TTPS’s Facebook page, yesterday the TTPS claimed that since the present murder rate is the same as for last year’s, which it is, this is evidence that there hasn’t been a spike in murders. A bold-faced lie because what they left out was that for the first seven and a half months (January 1st – August 16th), there were 50 less murders for the same period in 2020, but that number balanced off at our present time, because in the last 10 weeks (August 17th – October 28th), we have had some 50 more murders than what occurred for the same period last year.

This is the very definition of a spike because what it amounts to is basically 1 more murder per day, for the 10 weeks, in comparison for the same period in 2020. This is in fact one of the highest spikes we’ve seen in years. But why would the TTPS perform such statistical gymnastics to deny reality? It is because if they admitted that there is a spike, it would make Gary Griffith look good, and those who conspired to get rid of him look terrible, because from January 1st – August 16th, some 35 weeks, Griffith was able to reduce murders by a phenomenal 50 persons, and in just 10 short weeks, after he is not there, the powers that be oversaw 50 more murders, for the same period last year.

At the end of the year, 2020 saw 396 killings—the first time there was a downward trend in the murder toll in six years.
There was an SOE, people had to be off the streets, thus the reduction.

The point is it has been much higher and should end up below 400 ,no matter how you try to deny it, it shows significant progress and keeps the rate in the 20s/100,000 .

Progress occurs in stages and over time with trends and numbers, and the numbers say as bad as it is and as bad as it has been it won't get worse and is getting better, should we be like headless chickens running around aimlessly in circles at every murder report or should we look at the trends and acknowledge that we are indeed making progress and try to maintain that trajectory ?

It is far from alarming that individuals who chose a certain lifestyle are being killed by each other on the fringes in some dark allies and shit turf..that's not alarming at all..

What would be alarming is decent law abiding citizens getting gunned down at work, in traffic, the movies, the supermarket, the boulevard, at the concert, even your kids at school, and in all the nice places, what about active MPs being murdered at town meetings etc.. or young ladies, children and even the infirmed being targeted and slaughtered by any number of psychos from all walks of life, now that's alarming !

Brutal violence against women in Trinidad and Tobago ignored by government

154 women lost their lives to violence in three years

Bobolee says .....the above are being killed by each other on the fringes in some dark allies and shit turf..that's not alarming at all..

Amazing how he hides his head in the sand.

Nice words are Great. But actions and enforcements are a must in Most areas. T&T People are getting Lawless every day. Angry, and greed make for more crime. Giving away the Store, Giving handouts only encourage more Gummi hands stretched out. When that stops, the Anger comes out.. Lost of Discipline, and Respect is what plaguing T&T. Just look at the Opposition Nasty actions, LEADERS, and the Copy cats comes out.

Peter W. Charles

Boy leave the opposition out of the PNM Criminals business. Go and stand in Laventille with a sign around your neck and encourage your people to stop their criminal activities. Ask the rapist to apologize to the school child.

Peter W. Charles

Not once do you mention the fact that African families are broken and have a single mother problem, and what are the factors exacerbating this. That politicians benefit from this system of dysfunction. But the PNM Dunce Jacobs say no surge in crime, and here you come bursting his bubble with facts. At least you not afraid to say the Afro Trinis are the criminals when the rest of us knows that from birth.

Raven Madoxx

Jacob says no surge in murder...
This is normal as far as he concerned...
The people need to call crime stoppers...

With respect to the upsurge of murders and other crimes throughout T&T, criminologist Dr Wendell Wallace said that there is need for preventative measures rather than managing as crime “seems to be a runaway train.”Wallace, who was speaking on CNC3’s The Morning Brew, said in the last three weeks he has observed an increase in crime throughout T&T and added that there exists a fear factor.

“We need to manage crime but prevent first. Too often our strategies are aimed at interventions and then trying to suppress,” he added.
Wallace said focus is made on legislation agenda without thinking about a social agenda. He also said, “The data shows there are more afro-Trinidadians who are caught in that web of criminality but that depends on the type of crime because when you look at white collar crime it shows different individuals and some people argue that the police only target the afro-Trinidadian males between 16 to 29 but the fact is that quite a lot of young men are being caught in that trap.

Another criminologist, Darius Figuera said since the landmark of June 30 2020’s truce among gangs what have been happening in 2020 with an escalation in 2021 “is happening outside of the core of gangland in T&T where persons who are not within the new order are engaged in killing each other.”

He said, “The order was existing before it was made public on June 30 in living colour. The years 2017, 2018 and 2019 were the years of rivers of blood in Trinidad’s history and by 2020 the brakes would have already been applied by June 30 2020 thereafter everything just went into deep sleep in the core of gangland so from 2021 we started to see now an acceleration of the killings outside of core gangland among persons who are not clear on and included in the new order.”
