I’d like to unpack this a little…

What does the ‘Sir’ add to Curtly, except a peculiar ability to impress simpletons? What is the REAL reason he is a sir?

problemjay 2021-11-04 17:08:13

That Sir title knighting shit is for allyuh countries who still have the white woman crown as head of state. Like Sir Curtly country

Americans and most of the world don't care to even know about that Sir nonsense lol

Brerzerk 2021-11-04 17:09:36

That Sir is BS pun intended. So many other ways you could support/agree that Curtly was right. Sir, Sir, really??

That the lead poster will make this the headline of his/her post shows of intellectually backward he/she is.

It is sad really when people in our region still hold these belief that the "Sir" title is actually worthy

And what of some of our governments who recognizes it as a valid honor of excellence.

Amazing indeed.

Perhaps one should unpack this a little more. The understanding was that these "Sirs" were conferred by the Government of Antigua and not the British Government. Sir Gary Sobers was knighted by the Queen. That is both deserving and respected. He earned it and regardless of one's personal/political persuasions, it is a respected and honourable title when so earned.
I done.

Thanks. You responded more diplomatically and succinctly than I ever could have.

People obfuscating over the source of the title rather than the fact that it was earned, rather than self-conferred.

If Antigua was a republic I am sure another equally suitable title would have been bestowed on Sir Curtly. I am an anti-monarchist but does not mean I should disrespect a national recognition.

Emir 2021-11-05 11:00:30

In reply to Logic

it was earned

But why choose a foreign- former slave master and colonist title?

Why not choose one of the many great African titles?

Why show so much reverence for something that has a horrible past?

You don't need British/White /European validation to tell us our legend cricketer is great, period.

Isn’t cricket itself a relic of colonialism? Why play it?

You could say that about football, tennis, rugby and golf. That's a huge chunk of the sports landscape right there

Yes a unique UK anomaly but then again the Latin word doctus from whence cometh, doctor, meant a learnt person and not necessarily a physician

The part about surgeons going to Mr?

sudden 2021-11-05 13:29:07

In reply to nick2020

What else?

Like barristers and solicitors

Barristers were the advocates and solicitors did the research and prep.

Surgeons were the cutters operating at the direction of the physicians
