Too much was made of experience...

InHindsight 2021-11-08 01:18:25

by the selectors.

It was ridiculous if you ask me how weighted this aspect was for Harper and Bascombe.

Didn't Bravo and Pollard provide know how experience?

What about form, youthfulness and passion

Just asking

cool

Experience is good, but if declining, we need selectors with an eye to spot that.

Let's hope they can now see that nothing beats form, youthfulness and passion.

Look this squad was selected with one view in mind. Reinstate the players who were "so called" by the previous admins. This was to stick to them. Phil and Pollard made sure the old guard of IPL players were picked along with Rampaul and Fidel, who barely missed the cut.

I believe this directive came from the top and Harper complied.

What they didn't allow for is that those IPL stars were in decline.

Which other team had 3 or 4 player from the inaugural t20wc in 2007?

Yep I agree totally. When Harper and Pollard spoke you got the impression that without certain ole charges the team won't know how to play cricket.

Phil I regarded highly before has fallen quite low in my assessment of his coaching acumen

experience nowadays is not what is used to be. ok a few experience heads who has seen it before but with an analyst on board in every squad, the data they built up on the opposition and the players through technology looking it up for themselves. experience is just hype than the real deal.

Decent point. However, we still have to appreciate and consider the human element at times.

Raggs 2021-11-08 11:21:46

In reply to mikelegend

we certainly do but to pack the squad with so many old heads and they all make the final 11 on the park was criminal in this format.

Agreed, particularly so since they hadn’t been performing at INTERNATIONAL level for a number of years. As Pollard said in his WC interview after their final match; “We’re sorry, life goes on”

one thing it proves Pollard or coach Simmons cannot BUILD teams. Clive Lloyd never been credited enough for that skill.they packed the team with experience heads and hoped for the best.

positiveg 2021-11-08 12:18:28

I used to call them Friends and Family.
Cause Gayle was good at making sure he got picked by proclaiming in the public sphere about going to the WC even before he was picked.
Then Pollard brought his buddies along.
But as someone pointed out to have them all in the XI was criminal. Gyale and others' didn't deserve to start every game.

Look even now Gayle is speaking about getting a final game in JA. Lie he's forcing the selectors and administration hand.
BS

I noticed that. We will see if the selectors still fraid him. He can get a game by buying a ticket to watch a game.

FuzzyWuzzy 2021-11-08 21:02:19

I remember once when Gayle publicly announced, long in advance, which series he will and will not play. Holding asked if he is now dictating to the selectors when he wants to play.
But true to form they had no choice but to bend to his will. I suspect they are afraid of a public tongue lashing from Gayle.

Interesting point. What I'd say is that with data being collected on each player mea6n 'experience' has taken a new dimension.

InHindsight 2021-11-09 17:25:10

This admin swung the pendulum too far in favour of the ole players, slighted by Dave Cameron. You almost got the feeling that they fear(ed) the backlash.

Coach Phil Simmons as well relinquished autonomy to captain and senior players based on the experience mantra. To the point of creating a click and opportunity for a bunch of old players to have a last hurrah against sound reasoning

this is where a smart coach flips it on its head and pick a few 'inexperienced' players. A player like Gudakesh Motie hardly seen or played against in the international arena would have not so much data on him but he was quite successful in the recent CPL tournament.
By the time the opposition works him out or feel comfortable enough facing his bowling he'll just might have won us a game or two

Why is WI always one of the last countries to keep in or even lead in the evolution of cricket?

Wasn't it painfully obvious that this team would fail?

I called it a mile away.

Windies are very spiritual people other teams are more practical. So prayer and god guidelines is key before leading not too heavily on technology.

dayne 2021-11-10 16:38:18

The WI probably need more experienced Selectors, more experienced Selectors might not have given in to the wishes of Simmonds and Pollard.

Being spiritual is ok but one has to be practical as well

Phil Simmons showed himself to be a lackey of the T20 globe trotters. Sammy intimate that in commentary in one of the games
