Gayle Joins List of Athletes Who Hung on 2 Long

Walco 2021-11-11 18:51:35

The great Mohammad Ali heads that list. I almost cried watching Larry Holmes use Ali as a punching bag at the end of Ali's career ...

But when George came back he gave a decent account of himself.

True. I'm trying to think of others who hung around too long. I think Kareem and Patrick Ewing stayed too long.

VoopsandOut 2021-11-11 19:05:04

Seriously, why are we even having a conversation about Gayle at this time?

I think Shiv stayed too long. He was just hanging on bcs he love the game, and to have the record for the most runs for WI.
Same like Kapil, for the highest wickets record.
btw, unfortunately, I'm not a big basketball fan.

Feel free to ignore the conversation if you wish, but this thread is about athletes who stayed around too long, not just about Gayle.

Yes Shiv did stay a bit too long. Lara left too early, and Ambrose still had some gas in the tank when he left.

The UB brand will have a successful but brief promotional run in the LPL. I think the UB brand may even get another run in the CPL. Notice I used the word run instead of runs because there will not be many of those cool

Yes Shiv did stay a bit too long

6 months before Shiv was sent packing he made a test ton....he topped the WI test batting average...Clive Lloyd said at the time Shiv is not going anywhere...

Shiv continued to play FC cricket after he was dumped by Simmons and the same LLoyd....with above average results

Shiv merely had a bad patch.....the first one in over a decade...and they dumped him with obscene haste...

Walco 2021-11-11 19:24:06

In reply to Narper
I think Greenidge and Richards made tons in their last series or last matches. That was my frame of reference. Shiv was definitely in decline at the end, and it gave certain people who did not want him to break Lara's record an excuse to drop him.

Sri Lankan greats include Jayawardena are cussing Lanka officials for bringing in all these wash up stars and ignoring young local talent. Shahid Afridi, Gayle, Hafeez etc.

It is pointed out the 3 of the franchises are owned by Indians...none own by lankans.

See any similarities to our cpl?

Franchise t20 is killing off cricket around the world.

Even the Indians are complaining IPL is to blame for team India early exit.

Franchises are owned by businesses who only see bottom line...nothing about development.

National teams can’t have it both ways, not compensating the players adequately and expecting them not “eat ah food “ elsewhere!
For the franchise owners, they have to have a diversity of talent to be marketable worldwide.

FuzzyWuzzy 2021-11-11 20:13:13

In reply to StumpCam

The issue is that franchises are ignoring talented local players and instead feed washed up ex stars.

It's like the baby boomers and their elders, who refuse to retire, leaving young people fighting for jobs and scratching to start a career.

So, whose responsibility is it to develop players??
In IPL there are 7 national players per side!

Aren't all franchises under the auspices of a national cricket board: bcci, CWI, ca, etc.

In Boxing, the Brown Bomber , Joe Louis, of course Ali and in baseball, the 'say hey kid', Willie Mays.
Its always bestter when an athlete leaves the scene on a high...Seymour Nurse did it very well a wonderful
258 is still fresh in the memory.
The saddest in my time though ,remains Muhammed Ali.

Brerzerk 2021-11-11 21:24:09

Jeff Dujon should have left before allowing them to drop him. Mind you none around were much better than a declining Duj but it was time too.

The great Pele also hung around too long. Remember when he played in New York? I think it was for the New York Cosmos

hubert 2021-11-12 12:58:58

In reply to Walco

Pele called time at the appropriate time ion his International career..victory in World Cup final in 1970.
His club career continued and his venture with the Cosmos in NY was to bring Soccer to centre stage in USA and revived the sport
among Americans after the failure of the previous NASL of the 60s where many Jamaicans including Skill Cole and others
were recruited to start that League.

Pele gave credence as he was still the foremost name in the sport in early 70s.

Pele's presence was a success as from that.the USA hosted the WC finals and have gone on to have a fine domestic programme and a viable and competitive League
against the grain and opposition from other sports mainly BHaseball.

Michael Jordan was a shadow of himself in those final seasons in Washington.

If you never saw Jordan in his glory days and then seeing him for the first time towards the end in Washington you would be hard pressed to believe the lore and accolades he has garnered.

Has Serena hung on too long?

Federer?

Nadal?

Let's talk team sport...

Brady?

Did George Weah hang on too long?

How about Roger Milla?

Franco Baresi?

Gary Sobers

Rohan Kanhai? _ He played with a partial head of hair which was fully grey

Serena hasn't been the same since she had a child. She cried in the last final she was in when she lost. I think she would have called it quits if she had won. How about Kim Collins and even Justin Gatlin of late. Came 5th in his race in the Diamond League. I think Shiv would have played to 45 if he could. Shiv mind you is one of my favourite cricketers. He started to become selfish when it came to his individual stats as he got older and the players around him were poor. He refused to protect tbe tailenders at one point. It helped his average because normally his score would be not out lol.

Of course, the UB is a cricket great. Only the greats get opportunities to stay too long. Gayle is unquestionably a T20 great.

I started a thread a while back on whether Gayle was a great WI test opener. My position was that if Gayle was not a great WI opener, neither were Greenidge and Haynes.

Drapsey 2021-11-13 13:56:42

I started a thread a while back on whether Gayle was a great WI test opener.

The man scored his two triple tons as an opener. And don't forget that only four people have ever scored multiple triple tons.

A cricket great he undoubtedly is.

Just a side note here.

Contrary to what some might think, I gave up on Gayle when he opted out of playing tests at his peak. All he had to do was stay on playing tests until he scored that unprecedented third triple ton thereby elevating him into a class by himself. Very disappointing.

Walco 2021-11-13 14:47:29

In reply to Drapsey
I don't blame Gayle for that decision to opt out of playing Test cricket. I think we all would make the same decision ... well maybe not Raggs smile

Seriously though, Gayle would easily have surpassed the stats of Greenidge and Haynes if he had continued playing Test cricket.

Windiesfan78 2021-11-13 15:34:25

Chris Gayle proved that he was a good test player. He played 103 tests, scored 7214 with an average of 42.2 and has two triple centuries against quality opposition. We still see his highest test score 333 on his bat. Mind you, he is one of 4 batsmen to have scored 2 triple centuries, with the others being Don Bradman, Lara and Sehwag. That is a tremendous achievement. His last test match was played against Bangladesh in 2014 in St. Vincent and was a fitting end to his test career in which he scored 64 and 9 not out as W.I crushed the opposition by 10 wickets.
I believe the best time to see out a successful career is with a win. I am sorry that he couldn't have done so in t20 cricket. However, he leaves as a two time champion and I say this with confidence. You can quote me on this, CWI will NOT choose Gayle for another match.

VINCYPOWA 2021-11-13 19:09:39
