Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced that it will commence a new recruitment process for the new Men’s Selection Panel in January. The recruitment will replace Lead Selector Roger Harper and fellow Selector Miles Bascombe, whose contracts will not be renewed when they come to an end on December 31.

An Interim Selection Panel has been established, with Head Coach Phil Simmons at the helm, along with the captains in the respective men’s formats. Jimmy Adams, CWI’s Director of Cricket, will oversee the process. 

Adams said: “We want to thank Roger and Miles for their work and dedicated services to West Indies cricket in the last two years, as members of the Men’s Senior Selection Panel. Selecting West Indies teams for international competition is a very challenging assignment, and both gentlemen performed their roles with transparency and dignity.”

I have asked many questions in the past concerning this so called recruitment process...I will try again.

(1) Have the qualifications to be a selector been established?
(2) If yes, what are these qualifications?
(3) Will the positions be advertised?
(4) Will the board be taking applications directly?
(5) Would regional boards have any input in the process?
(6) Who will be interviewing these applicants?
(7) What is the role of the cricket director in this process? And would these selectors report to the Cricket director?
(8 ) How many selectors are you looking for?
(9) What is the remuneration and/or perks for such positions?
(10) Are there established guidelines for the selectors to follow in the selection process?

I quote the President of CWI verbatim: "Selectors will not become disciplinarians, selectors will pick the best available players who want to play at that time or who are obligated as in the case of contracted players".

Clear as day without any ambiguity.

Those are the words of the President of CWI. In my opinion they are straightforward and to the point. I do not think any explanation is needed here. Mr Harper or Mr Bascombe did not ask for an explanation during their two year stint. They were both intelligent enough to understand what was conveyed in that statement and I believe any new selector will also be intelligent enough to understand what the President of CWI meant when he made that statement.

Is best based on popularity?
Is best based on a player's ability to suck up to authority?
Is best based on the country you come from?
Is best based on experience?
Is best based on fitness?
Is best based on how you look? tall, short, fat. pot bellied?
Is best based on statistics? international, regional, local?
Is best based on the ability to last a whole test match...a whole series?
Is best based on the ability to speak to the media?

I can go on....and it is obvious Harper and others were clueless on what 'best' meant

I think you answered your own question and solved the mystery (which really wasn't a mystery at all) as to the non renewals.

Remember what this administration said the day it came to power? They will not interfere in the selection of players as was the case with the previous administration and they kept their hands clean. If they had interfered, questions would have been asked about Hemraj, Rutherford, Motie and Hetmyer.

I can do do a much better job than all of the selectors combined over the last 10 years and some of us here also.
We are not former professionals or administrators but seeing the BS they pick compared to our thoughts it is a big gap. Plus their empty head brainless selections is what have us near the bottom of each discipline.

in constructing job descriptions or even scope of employment as this may be, one should be precise.

even though, on the face of it, one can say a person should understand what that bit means, it is still board enough to warrant a footnote explanation or tighter construction.

And why has Simmons become more entrenched as a selector.

He is as culpable as the fired selectors.

Some knowledgeable posters here are saying that coach and cappo got what they wanted...lead selector was out voted and majority ruled.

I don't believe the unknown Bascombe had any say whatsoever....and followed coach
