Businessman Chris Dehring believes the lack of professionalism among West Indies cricketers is hurting the region’s chances of becoming a force in world cricket once more.
Dehring, who was CEO of the ICC World Cup held in the Caribbean in 2007, visually and performance-wise the current West Indies teams, just don’t look the part.
“There is no West Indies team that when they step out onto the field, they don’t look like the athlete of the day,” Dehring argued while speaking on the popular Mason and Guest sports talk show in Barbados on Tuesday.
“That is from a visual aesthetic perspective. We were the athletes, we were the thing people would pay to come and see. And when you look at the West Indies team now at the Test level or even at the recent T20 World Cup, it’s shocking, a jarring visual to see how athletic the Bangladeshis are, the Indians, the Australians, the Pakistanis; we are rotund, overweight, looking unfit.”

i remember when certain players cussed Bennett King saying they know their own bodies etc., and before that a certain cappo got rid of Dennis Waite, the physio, and after all that fans supported these players in their shoite.
man, this was on the cards for a long time.
as usual we only see the problem when it smacks us right in the face

WI cricket must suspend immediately the retainers at the regional level. Since that started players have become supremely complacent and have stagnated and now unfit...Its worse that ever.
Paying players to play cricket at the regional level has failed mainly because there is not enough organized cricket for the players...its like welfare money for players...they are relaxing and getting fat....and waiting for the next 'pay day'

why cant individual boards do their own monitoring of players and if deemed unfit against the set standard impose penalties, monetary or otherwise.
why does CWI have to do this?
is there something written that this is only the responsibility of CWI?
if not, it sounds like a cop out

Not directly, but he said selection policy is compromised when there is no consistency!
I think we have to make way for outliers a la Gayle! Can't be straight-jacketed when situations alter cases!
For example, not allowing Chanderpaul to bow out with dignity was great injustice!

De most newsworthy part of the interview was left out:
Chris Dehring:"...You set a very dangerous precedence with picking a man way in advance of the start of an international match.
Chris added: "...You interfere with the sanctity of the selection process."
Courtesy says, bravo Chris...you may be Jamaian but there is not an once of insularity in your bones.
You see it...you call it.
Dem insular spooners.

100%
It should be a requirement for any player to be fit before they are granted these contracts, time to reward success and reduce the number given out.

CWI has created a social welfare programme with these contracts.
And even soxial welfare programmes have some level of accountability.
................
But how can there be accountability when CWI authorises its own outlandish exemptions for fitness tests.

Chris Dehring is just firing warning shots. He's committed to following in the footsteps of his Uncle Pat (Rousseau) by taking over and running the WICB.
Watch out Shallow Skillet, Yagga is a coming!
