HEADLINE: West Indies announce Men’s squad for ODI tours to the Netherlands and Pakistan

CaribbeanCricket.com 2022-05-09 15:07:20

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the West Indies Senior Men’s squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan. The West Indies will visit the Netherlands for three ODIs on May 31, June 2, and 4, followed by another three ODIs on June 8, 10 and 12 in Pakistan.

The tour of the Netherlands will be the first-ever ODI Series between the two teams and will be played at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen. The matches in Pakistan will be played at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi. Both series form part of the ICC ODI Super League, where teams will have the opportunity to earn points to secure one of the top seven places, excluding hosts India, to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Three newcomers have been named in the ODI squad – fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis as well as specialist batter Keacy Carty. Both Seales and Lewis have played at the Test level. Carty is the first player from St. Maarten to be selected for the West Indies Senior Men’s team.

Lead Selector, the Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “We were impressed with Carty and the way he goes about his innings, we saw several glimpses of his ability the way he played against England earlier this year for the CWI President’s XI. We hope that by giving him this opportunity he will recognize the importance of representing the West Indies. We think he is a young batsman with great promise, and this is the kind of tour he can show he fits in.”

How come ODEAN Smith not in squad....

imusic 2022-05-09 15:58:02

Congrats to Carty and Shermon Lewis! Make the best of the opportunity young men! Particularly happy for Lewis who has been knocking on the door for some time. Carty has unfulfilled talent and Haynes’ comments reflect this.

No Evin Lewis hurts the batting but if he didn’t make the required fitness level, that’s on him. The batting is weak. No Lewis, no Hety. And Bonner is NOT a ODI batsman. Brooks keeps getting selected based on what exactly? Sub 30 batting average in test, List A, and T20 cricket and barely 30 in FC cricket. And he’s been around forever. What more they need to see from him?

And to think they once asked who was Ganga’s godfather. Brooks has CWI friends for life it seems.

Good luck Pooran. They did you no favors with this team from a batting perspective.…..and expect us to beat them 3-0 to secure automatic entry to the World Cup.

All the best

From caribbeancricket:

FULL SQUAD

Nicholas Pooran (Captain)

Shai Hope (Vice Captain)

Nkrumah Bonner

Shamarh Brooks

Keacy Carty

Akeal Hosein

Alzarri Joseph

Brandon King

Shermon Lewis

Kyle Mayers

Anderson Phillip

Rovman Powell

Jayden Seales

Romario Shepherd

Hayden Walsh Jr.

I would have put John Campbell in that squad before Bonner.

Netherlands should not be underestimated. Pollard found out that Ireland had other plans.

What's the rush in picking an X1?
Is Brooks selection because he is Bajan and a Lodge alum?

VoopsandOut 2022-05-09 21:16:01

i think Brooks gets in because there was no one else to make up the numbers. in so doing the selectors have forgotten Blackwood who should make this list def before Bonner and prob before Brooks as well. it is a real pity that there is no Lewis or Hety but I have been touting Carty for a while and am glad to see him get a chance in the big leagues. He makes the final XI before Bonner in my view.

No Greaves! What a shocker! lol lol lol

analyst-kid 2022-05-09 22:08:04

What about Reifer? He deserves a pick ahead of Brooks Lewis and Carty.

YOU CANT ARGUE any of those three can bat and bowl better tnan Reifer.

Shepherd ahead of Bonner for me.

bobby 2022-05-10 01:20:26

The batting is very weak. Do not be surprised if licks share in Holland. For sure they will be rinsed out in Pakistan. So sad.

Dukes 2022-05-10 01:23:02

The selectors think that the Netherlands can not make 240 in 50 overs and feel that Seales et al will bowl them out 3 consecutive times
Hope, Brooks, Bonner and Carty are slow scorers and they are hoping that Pooran and Brandon King can score quickly and Shep can fire.
They have taken a big risk.

If this team can't beat the Netherlands, we don't deserve to qualify for the ODI World Cup. We should be taking the strongest team possible.

ODEAN Smith...5 matches...144 runs ... average 36... strike rate 192....6 wks....average 20.... economy rate 5..... dropped....

demoralise the youngster...
Gayle was indeed selected for T-20 World Cup 2021....might again be selected later this year..,only wise selectors knows , the criteria....

when do King and shep score runs?

goliath 2022-05-10 08:44:45

Couple of observations:

"...whilst Shimron Hetmyer is also unavailable for selection to be at home for the birth of his first child" ...does this mean that he does not return to the IPL also?

I am not sure what else Reifer needs to do to make a WI team - could play ahead of both Brooks and Bonner

So what happened to Odean Smith, he a future WI star couldn’t make this very weak team?

no quarrel from me. I agree that Reifer and Odean should be ahead of Bonner and Brooks on the ODI team. Omission of Chase is also bizarre.
