NineMiles 2022-07-19 18:42:20

In reply to Halliwell

Rishi will make the final two but will the membership go for him?

I still don't think it's a question of race but rather on policies and his record.

His backstabbing of BoJo may not be forgiven by the Tory membership!

Halliwell 2022-07-19 18:49:32

In reply to NineMiles

True- the ‘fresh start’ morphed somehow into Liz and Rishi, and poor guy Rishi…the ladies have been distancing themselves from his, allegedly unilaterally imposed taxes

The ERG want a puppet, and they’ll get Liz.
Alas, the minority that wins this time is ‘white female’.

Maybe tomorrow will be a better dawn for these sell-out Indians.

That's it there!

She tries to portray herself as the second coming of Thatcher but she hasn't got a mind of her own. It's like someone else is pulling the strings.

Halliwell 2022-07-19 21:09:22

Truss looked blankly straight ahead, her body rigid with fear, and started misreading her script. She stumbled over words and left pauses mid-sentence. If she was hoping to sound statesmanlike, then it misfired badly.

She was robotic, brain-dead, managing to make Theresa May sound engaging, animated and personable. A laugh a minute. If this is the prime minister the country has been waiting for then we have all been lobotomised.

From the inimitable John Crace (Guardian)

Rishi will not win the votes of the party members therefore he will not become the next prime minister. Either
Liz Truss ,or Penny Mordaunt will be the new party leader, and prime minister .

granite 2022-07-20 08:38:38

In reply to cricketmad

I suspect that is what will happen, but Truss could turn out to be the worst PM we ever had, this woman hasn't got a clue, please tell me why Kemi Badenoch, who IMO sounds better than both Truss and Mordant was eliminated. The Conservatives just cannot help but be Conservatives.

cricketmad 2022-07-20 09:56:46

In reply to granite

If Kemi thought she could go all the way she was kidding herself. This country is not ready for a black female prime minister.

NineMiles 2022-07-20 15:03:26

Between Sunak and Truss for the next PM

Votes were:

Sunak 137
Truss 113
Mordaunt 105

mikesiva 2022-07-20 15:19:02

In reply to NineMiles

This whole soap opera was about Tory MPs switching their votes from one Tory jackass to another.

Now, these two will go to the Tory membership. They're between 100k - 200k who are mainly notoriously racist, elderly white people.

Truss will win.

Ugh!

I didn't know it was possible to have a more stupid PM than Boris Johnson, but Truss is that person.

It's no wonder BoJo is backing Truss. lol

But to be fair, BoJo is not stupid. He puts on an act and comes across like a buffoon but an idiot he is not.

Part of his charm to win the 'English' electorate.

For me, Truss is Theresa May MK2... will see how she campaigns in an election. She'll be a gift to Labour if she becomes PM.

Halliwell 2022-07-20 18:16:12

Liz will win

Her minority claims to fame are 1. woman, 2. non Conservative parents, and 3. Comprehensive School.

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss reach final two in race to become next UK prime minister - BBC News

camos 2022-07-20 22:31:02

In reply to mikesiva

Was reading an article about Sunak this morning, and the article framed his liability as being wealthy and not understanding common people, said his wife's father is a billionaire. I think the objection is him being Indian.

NineMiles 2022-07-20 22:43:48

In reply to camos

That's not the whole story.

He's wife was tax domiciled outside the UK when at a time he was raising taxes and National Insurance for everyone else during a cost of living crisis.

I think you lot just focus on the race issue when it is more nuanced than that.

For the conservatives, class is far more an issue than race!

Jeremy 2022-07-20 22:54:36

In reply to NineMiles

His wife and her parents are citizen of india so i guess they are taxed in india.

The queen of england is also taxed outside the UK.

NineMiles 2022-07-21 07:38:33

In reply to Jeremy

She lives in the UK so should be paying tax in the UK. You think if you go to work in the US, you'll be paying tax in Guyana?
But you missing the crucial point as usual. At a time when Sunak was raising taxes on UK workers, it is not a good look for his wife to be tax domiciled elsewhere, especially for someone who aspires to become PM one day.

Also attending BoJo's birthday party during lockdown and being fined by the police not going to help his cause either.

The queen of England is also taxed outside the UK.

I'm no royalist but I do know the queen pays some UK taxes.

And with all due respect, Ms Murty is no Queen! razz

Might help if you broaden your horizons a bit and get news from other sources rather that solely from the Indian media!

Read here the queen do not pay taxes.

I know this because i saw on a documentary in canada that a few millionaires do not pay taxes in canada.

Some millionaires has home in caribbean islands and other islands around the world as their main residence.

The queen name and some ministers name came up on that list too.

The Crown has a legal tax-exempt status because certain Acts of Parliament do not apply to it. Crown bodies such as The Duchy of Lancaster are not subject to legislation concerning income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax. Furthermore, the Sovereign has no legal liability to pay such taxes.

NineMiles 2022-07-21 09:42:28

In reply to Jeremy

Yes, the Monarchy benefits from tax exemptions but there was a public outcry back in 1992/93 resulting in the Queen and Prince Charles agreeing to pay the equivalent of income tax and capital gains tax.

That's why I said she pays some UK taxes.

Tory members don't want a brown man for party leader. Even if he is a roast breadfruit.

In reply to Jeremy Interesting – what’s his politics is he trumpi? What are British conservative values? His credentials are impeccable, he has no middle class friends but which politician of his stature does….will be an interesting ride….will white England submit? Obama 2.0?

JOJO 2022-08-20 13:10:34

Seriously?

Is Donald Trump Carter 2.0? They are both white men!

Rishi didn't realise that no matter how hard he tried to prove to the Tory members that he's a roast breadfruit, the racist Tory members were always going to vote for the white candidate...even if they don't know anything about her!
