there is no such time as 12pm or 12am
Explain further
In reply to sudden
I guess it should be either MIDDAY (NOON) (in this case) or MIDNIGHT!!!. Never gave it much thought.
In reply to Osmond
exactly
In reply to methodic
why? just think about it
In reply to sudden
Sudden, this is not primary school where we accept information or misinformation without query. At the end of 11:59:59, are all the hours, minutes and seconds for one day complete?
In reply to sudden
The Queen took the clock with her as well???
In reply to methodic
So what is 1 second after dat?
I love learning.
In reply to sudden
12am commence morning, 12pm begins afternoon!
In reply to methodic
there are reasons why 1200 hrs military time is called midday or noon and 2400 hrs is called midnight.
it is only recently that i see 12pm and then designating it as midday or noon. have you ever seen 12am?
In reply to Brerzerk
If all the hours, minutes and seconds are completed. Then the next second is a new day. To me that seems more logical because the other way we will have two days sharing the same time. Actually 12am might truly exist and midnight might just be a general term.
In reply to StumpCam
so what does am mean in latin?
what does pm mean in latin?
In reply to methodic
it goes back to the meaning of am- ante meridiem and pm - post meridiem. look them up for clarity
In reply to sudden
In reply to methodic But, isn't the day only completed on the stroke of 12?! If so, isn't it only a nanosecond after 12 before one can say new day has begun hence 12:01 am or 12:1nanosec pm?
In reply to sudden
Good! Now you giving me something I can work with; intelligence!
In reply to sudden
Soon you'll want to decimalize the clock.
In reply to methodic
man this is common knowledge. primary school stuff
why you think they call one noon or midday and the other midnight
sorry...i thought you knew and were playing de ass
In reply to sudden
Convention
When one entity ends, another begins
There is no first day of the week nor is there a first month of the year. Time was invented for man, not man invented for toime.
So bark up another tree
In reply to Halliwell
Stroke of 12.. noon or midnight
In reply to Khaga
Depends what we have just LEFT
By the time you ask the question, the answer is obvious.
In reply to Halliwell
Depends on where you are!! Not what you left . You love to live in the past..
In reply to Halliwell
convention- governs the human construct of the world around us and how we communicate it
In reply to Brerzerk
So, you all only use nanoseconds when involves a Jamaican athlete?!
In reply to sudden
You got to deal with the earth spinning faster Link Text
In reply to sudden
Because it is common that don't mean it right. You know how many wrong things we were taught in primary school! At least now I know what you working with, primary school education which is common.
In reply to sudden
Dinosaurs embraced convention
We change the world and challenge orthodoxy in the name of progress

In reply to sudden
I would think most people, including myself, consider 12 am midnight and 12 pm noon. However, recently I've seen the terms 12:01 am and 12:01 pm being used to avoid any confusion.
In reply to methodic
why dont you quit whilst ahead
In reply to sudden
You and Sarge went same school or wha?
In reply to Fivestar
incorrect.. even if 12pm was right it would be midnight
but again go back to the meaning of ante meridiem and post meridiem. there are reasons for the terms midday or noon, and midnight
In reply to sudden
Why you making people do that? You know that is very difficult and people are not on this board to do that.
In reply to Khaga
He good tho ent?
What happens when the mail order bride is away with her family from Ukraine
In reply to sudden
Anyhow in all honesty, thanks for the info. In my life 12 will be a new day until I get more info than just the Latin say so.
In reply to Dukes
i feel your pain.
my old 6th form history teacher aka The Beast, used to say the world is in the state it is becos most people are ignorant (lack knowledge).
i used to think he was joking until social media

Should that not read there ARE no such times as 12pm and 12am?
In reply to culpepperboy

In reply to culpepperboy
I see you, straw man maker
In reply to powen001

In reply to sudden
Yes...a full HALF inch more
In reply to powen001
that is a disturbing thought even as a joke
In reply to sudden
Explain
In reply to powen001
Latin is the root of all civilisation communication
Appalling from a self-respecting African..
In reply to Halliwell
Hey, this debate is better than watching that 6 or out junk!
In reply to Khaga
In reply to culpepperboy
no
In reply to methodic
Straight out of the COLONIZERS PLAY BOOK.
but to be honest...
ENGLISH , FRENCH, SPANISH, ITALIAN, GREEK...all have their roots in LATIN.
CLASSICS I think they are called..
In reply to sudden
That is not the problem. It is the unwillingness to learn that is the problem. The disrespect for expertise, the flaunting of one's ignorance as a badge of honor and the general lack of intellectual curiosity are all symptoms of the worldwide general malaise.
Lemme stop there before I start pissing off people.
In reply to powen001
more like the root that oppressed our world
In reply to Dukes
Talk you talk
Is true!!!
Everybody is an expert on everything on here
In reply to powen001

In reply to Dukes
In reply to Dukes
Yeah, do stop now Pompous facker!
In reply to sudden
indeed
In reply to sudden
If most people think of 12 am as midnight and 12 pm as noon, cricket matches starting at noon will probably continue to be referred to as starting at 12 pm.
In reply to Fivestar
Leff these scholarly folks alone. The average Joe knows exactly what 12am and 12pm means.
The British colonials have trained these folks very well indeed!
In reply to sudden
there are reasons why 1200 hrs military time is called midday or noon and 2400 hrs is called midnight.
After 23:59 does your digital watch go 24:00 or 00:00?
In reply to NineMiles
So who trained you to think 12am or 12pm? Africans using their own method?
In reply to Prako
Does it go to 12am or 12am? What is your point?
I dont know if all the mods are incompetent. I doubt it. That would be unlikely.
But some of them are stupid.
In reply to sudden
I tend to use noon and midnight but I do understand when someone says 12am and 12pm.
It's no biggie really!
In reply to NineMiles
No problem. I know we Brits say noon or midnight
The confusing thing is that 12pm could arguably be used for midnight
In reply to sudden
Only be someone with little book, common,or any sense!!!!!
In reply to Dukes
I agree wit dat. Ah mean Toussaint defeat the French army and then gone to sit in a meeting with them. Why fight just go to the meeting.
you know the foxes decided the best way to control the chickens is to groom the farmers. So now the farmers love the foxes and blame the chickens for their own demise. Of course this is the expertise of the fox.
I especially cringe at those missing climbing the slippery post of religion and treading on the wine press of politics. They must have missed the progress that took us from Obama to Trump.
that starts as early as a young child. when you accept the parameters of the new world as it is taught to you
In reply to Halliwell
Please forgive Sudden, he got de PM on his mind.
In reply to sudden
This very morning, booked an appointment for an electrician to come round to give me a quote.
The response by email read: "Ed will see you on Thursday at 12pm".
Knew exactly what the office assistant meant!
In reply to Halliwell
If you mean like De Fraud? A resounding yes
In reply to NineMiles
Why not write noon? The same amount of digits
In reply to culpepperboy
That's a lot, quite a bit
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
How does this get 4 pages long?
sudden is a cawmerian genius
In reply to nick2020
De 1st post started in the A.M. and it's now de P.M.
Another thing the digital clock registers 00.00 instead of 2400 to indicate a new day is about to begin and if it read 24.00 it would be indicating the end of the day, which is the same thing
And before someone says something yes 00.00 is a number
And noon or midday means the perfect position of the earth relative to the sun between morning and evening hence it is neither am or pm
Same goes for midnight
Edited
In reply to sudden
Is this the same as the solar noon?
In reply to powen001
Since when, since they, copied, translated and printed earlier civilization's sumting?

In reply to NineMiles
Why do you yank Dukess chain?
In reply to sudden
Yeah, I really shouldn't be doing that. I'm a naughty boy and will give myself a slap!
Like the great Kendrick Lamar said; Sit down, be HUMBLE!
In reply to NineMiles
whether it works is a different matter
In reply to sudden
Isn't there a song about this?
Oh please, don't you yank my chain
(Don't yank my chain)
'Cause I don't want my chain to be yanked
(Don't yank my chain)
AM and PM are on a 12hrs rotation... 11:59AM - 12:00PM or hundred hours...
In reply to Cricket_101
you have to examine what a.m and p.m mean
ante meridiem
[ adv ] ( Latin ) before noon ; " let ' s meet at 11 A . M ."
[ adj ] before noon
post meridiem
[ adv ] ( Latin ) between noon and midnight ; " let ' s meet at 8 P . M ."
[ adj ] after noon
In reply to sudden
I thought this thread would die a natural death after you shared the latin definitions of A.M. and P.M. Perhaps you should post the definition of meridies/meridiem as well, but that would be repeatedly repetitious.
Anyhow, one thing I have learned over the years is that things you know are incorrect become correct due to common or popular usage. Not sure how that would work in the context of A.M. and P.M. unless A.12P.M. and P.12P.M. (Same for A.M.) take root
In reply to sudden
How long was the hundred-year war?
In reply to Walco
NOT TO ME!!!!!!
If it is wrong it is wrong.I do not care how popular a wrong thing is.I will continue to say it is wrong.
In reply to Dukes
It can't be wrong if it is right.
It's all about the notation and the inherent problems with the 12 -hour clock.
In reply to Dukes
Have you ever heard of a combination lock?
In reply to culpepperboy
what is your point?
In reply to sudden
You tell me. You're the one who went Cawmere.
In reply to sudden
What is your weight?
In reply to culpepperboy
check the PM
In reply to sudden
What day is midnight?
In reply to sudden
Or is it mass?
In reply to Dukes
If it is wrong it is wrong.I do not care how popular a wrong thing is.I will continue to say it is wrong.
Societies evolve all the time
The solution is to decimalize the clock. Just about everything else is, anyway.
In reply to Drapsey
Simple solution -a minute after 11.59am it is noon, midday or 12 o'clock, a minute after 11.59pm it is midnight or 2400hrs or 00:00
In reply to Walco
almost makes me want to agree with Dukes
In reply to sudden
Frivolous issues generate the most posts
And noon or midday means the perfect position of the earth relative to the sun between morning and evening hence it is neither am or pm
Same goes for midnight
Does that mean we get the same amount of daylight between noon and dusk as we do between dawn and noon???
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Correct, just like language evolves.
Take Dukesie's use of 'Irregardless' for example!
In reply to NineMiles
Well v soon no will mean yes and yes will mean no
AM will mean afternoon to midnight and PM will mean after midnight to midday
In reply to sudden
Now you're being silly!
In reply to NineMiles
Yes I am becos where do we stop?
In reply to sudden
Do you realise that this 12am = midnight and 12pm = noon has existed for in excess of 30 years now? Have you ever looked at the clock on your computing device?
As I pointed out earlier it is as common now as a "combination" lock.
In reply to culpepperboy
If that is so it just means for 30 years a mistake has been made
In reply to sudden
Just like people have been calling conkies stew dumplings for years now.
In reply to sudden
What about the combination lock and weight mistakes? Do you accept those?
In reply to culpepperboy
Or a certain PM a female?
In reply to sudden
You would have to tell me. She is YOUR girlfriend.
In reply to NineMiles
That has never been a real English word. By the way midnight n miday is but a second. Shouldn't have evoked such long chat n emotions
12:00 day or night only is visible for .00000000000000000000000000000000000000001 of a second...before you even watch the clock strike 12:00 its already AM or PM...I say its 12AM and 12PM...
In reply to WestDem
Same thing De Fraud would say
In reply to sudden
all of dah is understood
11:59 Am. 12:00 PM.. 11:59PM- 12:00 AM. 12 hrs cycle =24 hrs earth rotation
Induces day/nite.
In reply to sudden
I get yr point, and totally agree with it.
But... if U R setting an alarm on the so-call smart devices to wake U up at 12:00, wht would U tell it?
Or maybe U would set it to use GMT...
In reply to Walco
"Anyhow, one thing I have learned over the years is that things you know are incorrect become correct"
Like "American people"?
In reply to tops
so a smart device is a truth teller now?
who sets their alarm for noon or midnight BTW?
if you say, "Alexa, set alarm for noon." would Alexa say no?

Does that mean we get the same amount of daylight between noon and dusk as we do between dawn and noon???/[quote]
I see you still havent answered my question.
In reply to StumpCam
i dont see what that has to do with what i said, which you cited. hence it is irrelevant to the matter under discussion
In reply to sudden
Arent you claiming that midday/noon is the middle of the day because of the perfect position of the earth relative to the sun??? Therefore that would lead one to believe that we would have equal amount of light either side of midday/noon, no???
BTW, Im not an astronomer, I only slept at a Holiday Inn.
In reply to StumpCam
not only is that irrelevant, it simply makes no sense
In reply to sudden
Sir, I was asking a question relating to your claim/statement.
No further questions!
In reply to Dukes
Here is an example for you. I have noticed for some years now that some people, even people with university degrees, use the word "your" when they should use "you are" or "you're." I expect that eventually dictionaries will start referring to your and you're as synonyms
In reply to Walco
another is, to and too, which bothers me to no end
In reply to sudden

American people are always correct. Anyhow, America has its own language and it was an adjustment for me after I moved here. Imagine my surprise as a teen to find out that "learnt" is not a word after having that word crossed out and points deducted from my "English" paper in high school. Recently I was corrected by someone after using the word indisciplined "incorrectly". I was told that the correct word was undisciplined
In reply to sudden
The one that bothers me the most is when they refer to this 6 and out junk as cricket.
In reply to Walco
undisciplined? what did you say?
In reply to sudden
If someone give birth at 12 Midnight on August 4th but when timestamped shows 12:00:15...that HR:MM:SEC...what should truly be on that child's birth certificate?
In reply to WestDem
If it is midnight, is it the 3rd, 4th or 5th?
In reply to sudden
Undisciplined is also correct in American english, but I kept my mouth shut and left him to his ignorance.
In reply to sudden
Didn't U C the part where I said I agree with U?
"if you say, "Alexa, set alarm for noon." would Alexa say no?"
I just test it out on google home...
I said 'set alarm for noon' and it said: "OK, your alarm is set for tomorrow at noon."
I wouldn't B around tmr at noon, else I would have left it to hear if it would say 12:00 pm or noon.
In reply to culpepperboy
In reply to Walco

In reply to WestDem & tops
unnuh know how to complicate a simple issue
In reply to sudden
"Well v soon no will mean yes and yes will mean no"
hmm...But...But... dah is wah me been hearing since I was a teen...When girls say no, they mean yes...
It's a good thing I didn't follow them advises...
btw, me nah complicate anything...
In reply to culpepperboy
BEST POST IN HERE!!!
In reply to Dukes
correct.
the very reason most of the world has gone to shyt is because of Man worship crap...Trump say it was a picnic on January 6th...men who were almost murdered who condemned him on the day now..say it was a picnic and agree with Trump.
So the plebs and rednecks see no reason to call out wrong doing...so rig the machines and divert the election process to win...who gives a ffffff anymore..

In reply to doosra
human kind decide. we construct our own reality
In reply to sudden
so then there is 12 am and 12pm
for some
In reply to doosra
we human kind or those in authority also decided noon and midnight in lieu. so until the fringe reach power or a majority then it is what it is
to show how wrong 12 pm and 12 am are;
12 am arguably could be noon given the what pm means and 12 pm could be midnight given when am means
In reply to sudden
12 does not exist
In reply to sudden
"human kind decide. we construct our own reality"
And U say how me a complicate things. 😁
In reply to tops
