West Indies vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI

Narper 2022-08-19 16:51:46

Venue: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados

West Indies (Playing XI):
Shai Hope(w), Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Keacy Carty, Nicholas Pooran(c), Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Yannic Cariah, Alzarri Joseph, Kevin Sinclair

New Zealand (Playing XI):
Martin Guptill, Finn Allen, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Tom Latham(w/c), Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, James Neesham, Trent Boult

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Narper 2022-08-19 16:52:50

What to expect:
Left-arm spinners Akeal Hosein and Mitchell Santner enjoyed productive outings in the first ODI. If the surface doesn't aid run-making again, the likes of Shai Hope and Kane Williamson will have crucial roles to play to try and bat as long as possible. However, showers could interrupt this crucial game.

Narper 2022-08-19 16:53:32

West Indies have won only one out of their last seven series and that victory came against Netherlands.

So for them to finally clinch a trophy against a top side like New Zealand would do them a world of good with the World Cup scheduled next year

Windiesfan78 2022-08-19 17:03:18

In reply to Narper

We had some showers this morning, not enough to stop cricket. I am ok with the last two matches being rained out. That way, we win the series big grin.

Narper 2022-08-19 17:33:59

BREAKING: "Kane Williamson will miss today's 2nd ODI v West Indies in Barbados due to a quad injury.

Williamson felt tightness in his upper-right quad during game 1 & his omission is described as precautionary. Tom Latham will captain the side in Williamson’s absence," is the latest update from the Blackcaps.

Narper 2022-08-19 17:49:36

Nicholas Pooran:
We are gonna have a bowl, same wicket today. We will try to restrict New Zealand to as low score as possible. It's about the fight during the key moments and be consistent in bowling in the right areas. Everyone did well in the first game. King is back today and Blackwood misses out today

Narper 2022-08-19 17:51:35

Tom Latham:
Unfortunately he's picked up a niggle and it's precautionary. Important we make those adjustments with the bat and for us it's about trying to build partnerships and have that foundation for the end.

Glenn Phillips comes in for Williamson and Neesham comes in for Ferguson.

Narper 2022-08-19 17:58:02

Pitch report:
It's the same pitch that was used in the first game. Spinners got an excessive amount of turn as compared to the T20I series. Last game there was uneven bounce when pitched in that particular good length region," reckon Daren Ganga and Shakera Selman.

1.20pm The last time West Indies beat New Zealand in an ODI series was back in 2012, when they won 4-1 at home. A chance to repeat that ten years later, with ten crucial Super League points at stake; remember, these two are the hosts' final two ODIs in the league.

1.52pm Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein speaks ahead of the match: "My role is to go and get wickets. [Cariah and Sinclair] did pretty well. Even though the wicket is offering spin, you need to bowl in the right areas... most important is to bowl at the stumps. It all depends on the situation of the match, and what the team and the captain require."

Holder to Guptill, out Caught by Shamarh Brooks!! Typical Martin Guptill. He loves playing the lofted shots down the ground and after a series of dots, he tries to go for the release shot and perishes. The cross-seamer with extra bounce outside off, Guptill's loft had more height than distance and the fielder at mid-off runs back to accept the opportunity.

Halliwell 2022-08-19 18:27:20

Taming the openers with a dependable and consistent pair of bowlers makes all the difference in limited overs…I mean, sometimes a #Finisher will come and take the game away from you but more often than not, you set their run rate back early and it’s always for them to play catch up and that’s filled with risk

Easy game but hard to execute

BOWLED !!!!!!!!!! Conway gawn !!!!

8.5
Alzarri Joseph to Conway, out Bowled!! Alzarri Joseph strikes in his first over. Troubled Conway with extra pace and bounce the previous delivery and this time pushed it a touch wide of off, Conway looks to ride the bounce with a gentle dab and ends up dragging it back onto the stumps off the thick inside edge

8.6
Alzarri Joseph to Latham, no run, 141ks back of a length outside off, solid punch to backward point. Alzarri Joseph starts off with a wicket-maiden

Narper 2022-08-19 18:46:25

Latham goes now...J Ho strikes
9.4
Holder to Latham, out Caught by Kevin Sinclair!! A third-ball duck for the stand-in skipper. He threw his head back in disappointment the moment it left the bat. He knew he was a goner. Once again extra bounce doing the trick. Holder pitched it on a good length and got the ball to climb rapidly outside off, Latham looks to cut it behind square and slices it off the thick top-edge straight to the fielder at backward point

Latham c Kevin Sinclair b Holder 0(3)

5.35pm So play to restart at 5.50pm local time. No overs lost. That is some relief to all those awaiting action all this while.

5.23pm The rain has stopped, and the mopping-up is in full flow. The cover from the main square has been taken off, as the outfield is dried with the help of rollers.

4.55pm There is no update yet from the ground, so presumably, it continues to rain in Bridgetown.

"Passing the time playing Gin Rummy with the misses and daughter, getting told off for too many rain update checks" --- Well, you are still getting to enjoy a game, Tim - rain or no rain.

Brendon: "It's early Saturday morning here in New Zealand therefore not doing much during the rain delay." --- But never too early - or late - to feed yourself...

Krishna: "Being a NZ fan in India is hard. Matches happen at random times and i tend to find ways to stay awake. I'm learning Japanese on Duolingo rn, and waiting for the match to resume ASAP." --- Brilliant utilisation of the time, maybe some of which you can also devote to reading about cricket in the land.

Santner to Cariah, out Keacy Carty Run Out!! Never sniff a run when Guptill is prowling around inside the ring. Keacy Carty learnt that lesson today. Worked to the right of the opener who moves swiftly on the slide and picks the ball up, gets up and throws down the stumps with a direct-hit all in one motion. Carty was looking for the quick single but is too late to get back, even a dive does not save him

Oh, now it rains after we've passed 20 overs confused.

sgtdjones 2022-08-20 01:37:14

9:07 pm: The players are coming off. It started with the fielders asking for a ball replacement as it had gotten wet. But the drizzle steadied and signalled another interruption. Given a rain break earlier cost 90 minutes, this one would start cutting down overs pretty much immediately. We will have a result even if play doesn't continue. NZ will win on the DLS method if that is the case. The par score is 168, WI are 105 runs behind. The rain his heavy. We'll keep you posted as updates arrive.

sgtdjones 2022-08-20 01:44:30

Bez: "Look, Duckworth-Lewis-Stern is more reliable than people often make it out to be, but sometimes, just sometimes, the scenarios it concocts are absurd. How does it make any sense for a team chasing 213 from 50 overs (4.3 runs/over) to have a DLS par score of 168 at 22.4 overs (7.4 runs/over)?! I'm not saying WI are hard done by here - they'd be behind just about any sort of par score target you can dream up - but that just seems objectively ridiculous." The loss of wickets makes a huge difference. Had WI lost two wickets at this point the target would have been 77 or in that neighbourhood at least.

Its simple, WI lost 7 wickets. Had they only lost 1 wicket, the par score would have been 66.

In other words what DLS is saying is for de WI would be need to be at 168 - 7 after 22.4 overs to be in position to win de match

....caught on the boundary

35.3
Santner to Cariah, out Caught by Finn Allen!! A fine catch by Allen at deep extra cover and that's game, set, match! This was lofted uppishly by Cariah, but Allen near the boundary takes the catch, parries the ball just when he's about to overhaul the fence, and comes back in to complete the catch on the second attempt. Clean catch by the field and NZ win by 50 runs (DLS method). The players are out on the field for the customary handshakes.

Finn Allen | Player of the Match:
It was nice to take the team to a competitive total. Would have been great to get those four runs.

sgtdjones 2022-08-20 03:09:30

Finn Allen, POTM:

11 pm: New Zealand square the series. They were the deserved winners, but Cariah and Joseph's batting was gritty delight. It wasn't enough, but that was mainly due to Boult and Southee who took three each in their first spells of six overs. There was a run out a few overs later, a rain break, the target being reduced. Then came the Cariah-Joseph show. The 85-run stand didn't seem like it would bring them close, it didn't but it took them farther than expected.

Narper 2022-08-20 03:11:31

We were in deep trouble when we lost six wickets in the powerplay. Alzarri and Cariah had a great partnership. We'll have to word hard, NZ are not going to give it away easily. He (Cariah) has been working hard in first class cricket, he grabbed it wonderfully, it was a mature innings, really happy for him..

Tom Latham:
It was a fantastic performance, Finn played a fantastic knock. When you have 212 on the board, the belief there's in the side. With two world class bowlers taking six wickets, that was nice. Full credit to them for the way they came at us after the rain break. He (Allen) is a powerful player, and a devastating player. Full credit to the way he played. It was a great partnership between Mitchell and Allen. We lost our way after the rain break..

Maispwi 2022-08-20 03:55:32

In reply to sgtdjones

You are looking at the DLS from a run rate perspective and not one of resources. Each team has 10 wickets and the available overs as their resources at the start of an inning.

The more wickets that are lost, the harder it becomes to achieve a particular target.

Every wicket lost translates to a run deficit which increases with every subsequent fall of a wicket.

In this case the average runs per wicket lost was about 15 based on thousands of rain affected matches played.
