Taming the openers with a dependable and consistent pair of bowlers makes all the difference in limited overs…I mean, sometimes a #Finisher will come and take the game away from you but more often than not, you set their run rate back early and it’s always for them to play catch up and that’s filled with risk

Mayers is not and will never be an opening batsman. You can get away with that poor technique in T20 but not in longer versions of the game. He would be a useful middle order bat and deserves his spot with jlhos new ball swing bowling. But opening bat? No way

Oh, now it rains after we've passed 20 overs .

9:07 pm: The players are coming off. It started with the fielders asking for a ball replacement as it had gotten wet. But the drizzle steadied and signalled another interruption. Given a rain break earlier cost 90 minutes, this one would start cutting down overs pretty much immediately. We will have a result even if play doesn't continue. NZ will win on the DLS method if that is the case. The par score is 168, WI are 105 runs behind. The rain his heavy. We'll keep you posted as updates arrive.

Bez: "Look, Duckworth-Lewis-Stern is more reliable than people often make it out to be, but sometimes, just sometimes, the scenarios it concocts are absurd. How does it make any sense for a team chasing 213 from 50 overs (4.3 runs/over) to have a DLS par score of 168 at 22.4 overs (7.4 runs/over)?! I'm not saying WI are hard done by here - they'd be behind just about any sort of par score target you can dream up - but that just seems objectively ridiculous." The loss of wickets makes a huge difference. Had WI lost two wickets at this point the target would have been 77 or in that neighbourhood at least.

11 pm: New Zealand square the series. They were the deserved winners, but Cariah and Joseph's batting was gritty delight. It wasn't enough, but that was mainly due to Boult and Southee who took three each in their first spells of six overs. There was a run out a few overs later, a rain break, the target being reduced. Then came the Cariah-Joseph show. The 85-run stand didn't seem like it would bring them close, it didn't but it took them farther than expected.

The lower order really showed up the top order. After being 27/6, 161 is a really good effort.

You are looking at the DLS from a run rate perspective and not one of resources. Each team has 10 wickets and the available overs as their resources at the start of an inning.

The more wickets that are lost, the harder it becomes to achieve a particular target.

Every wicket lost translates to a run deficit which increases with every subsequent fall of a wicket.

In this case the average runs per wicket lost was about 15 based on thousands of rain affected matches played.
