T&T ...A need for leadership

In 13 days, T&T will turn 60 years old as a nation. It is a major milestone and, if it were a human being, it would have been a time when you were getting close to retirement and when you could look back and determine whether you made a real difference in the world, your community or at least your family. In terms of the life of a nation, T&T is still relatively young, but one can reasonably admit that as a nation we have failed to make the most of the resources we have been blessed with, and a lot of that stems from a lack of good leadership. To put things into perspective, T&T has already produced and used 25 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas. It has another 20 tcf of gas in its 3P reserves and an estimated 50 tcf to be discovered. In all, it is possible that this island of 1.3 million people would have sat in a basin of between 45 and 100 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, world-class by any standard.

When you add to that, T&T has discovered and produced over 2.5 billion barrels of oil, with at least another 500 million barrels in reserves. You can see that this country has been a world-class hydrocarbon province.T&T has also been blessed in terms of its location, outside the hurricane belt, is located literally in line with the major shipping routes and is a gateway to Latin and South America. At the time of writing this article, there had been 360 murders, 22 in four days, and a Commissioner of Police who seemed at sea in terms of what to do.Imagine the Commissioner of Police is in yesterday’s newspaper confirming that the Police Service is aware a lot of the guns are coming through those ports, and yet there appears either inertia or a deliberate turning of a blind eye to the problem. Where is the leadership in all of this?

Crime and the fear of crime will derail any society. It hurts economies. In some communities and towns in T&T, businesses are extorted by the so-called community leaders or their agents, and this can lead to some people simply not getting into business or causing additional costs to the State. So crime is a major challenge, and it can only be dealt with by high-quality leadership in the police service and the Government.

T&T Comments:

Alexis Archer

By giving the broader reach of crime and corruption and the detrimental effects they have on the economy and society at large, uou bring these issues to the forefront, where they belong (until they are addressed with serious serious and coordinated efforts).
The levels of crime and corruption are profound and endemic. For far too many, it is their 'way of life'...from the greatest to the least. Like a cancer, it has metastasized,, throughout the body (country), akin to the 'stage 4' level, to where the "patient' cannot be cured.
This is a land of 'opportunists' NOT opportunity. 'Good people' are on the "Endangered Species List". For those planning the celebration of "the 60th" year of Independence, it is a 'fool's errand'.. It rings hollow, empty. It would be more appropriate to hold a 'wake' or Mass and funeral. (You can still fete, drink and jump up)!

The best way to ascertain if a country is suffering from poor leadership is to perform a simple comparison. If you compare Rwanda's growth as a nation to Trinidad & Tobago you see just how poor our quality of leadership really is. Rwanda is basically a 28 year old country compared to T&T's 60 years. Because of the genocide that took place in Rwanda in 1994 the entire country was decimated. In 100 days eight hundred thousand people were killed in Rwanda. The life expectancy in Rwanda has doubled since 1994 to age 60. Their crime rates, murders, robberies, and house robberies are now at Moderate to Low levels in Rwanda. In Trinidad the crime rate is a shock to the World. The corruption Index rank for Rwanda is 45%, and Trinidad & Tobago is 62%. Between 2016-2019, 650 Rwandan people were charged and sentenced for corruption. Some of these were government officials and politicians. There is No listing of any number of persons charged and convicted in T&T for corruption. Rwanda is one of the least corrupt countries worldwide. T&T is the holder of the rank of one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Rwanda's average Growth Rate is 8%. T&T's average growth rate since 2016 if honestly calculated has been Negative from 2016-2022. Is Leadership a problem in T&T? Hell yeah. Rwanda's population is over 12 Million. Ours is 1.3 Million. Rwanda's Police Force, with a population 10 times the size of ours, is able to keep crime levels low. Compare that to our police force.

Everyone should agree, even Dunce Hinds " WE ARE AT WAR "
Ponder the following points...........
i) War cost money, poor boys can't afford AR15 machine guns...
ii) Who is funding our War ??
Example: US and NATO funding Ukraine War..........

60 years ago Trinidad inherited from Britain a police force that was trained competent crime was low,it also inherited a health service that was efficient dedicated also a government structure that worked .In the life of a nation 60 years is a blip but in that blip it as all disappeared all the good just leaving a dysfunctional country and there seems no way back the country has been mismanaged by successive governments corruption is rife someone needs to come up with a solution and fast
