Is Guyana a REAL PLACE??

Dukes 2022-08-28 14:15:20

I grew up in Georgetown,Guyana in the 1960's and as a child my parents took me to the zoo.It was a magical place. We saw manatees and snakes and jaguars and all kinds of turtles and exotic animals like multi-colored birds and strange looking animals.I left Guyana in 1970 and migrated to England in 1976 where I trained as a nurse and had a family consisting of 3 children. I now have 5 grandchildren.I decided having not visited Guyana in more than 40 years to go back and take my 2 oldest grandchildren aged 11 and 9.
Because of my childhood memories of the Zoo,I took them there.
It was mind boggling what I saw. The majority of the cages were empty and all the exotic animals that used to be there were no where to be seen. Instead to my utter astonishment and disbelief I saw a cows and a donkey in cages. A DONKEY!!!!!!!
I felt embarrassed and humiliated as I frequently told my grandchildren of my childhood and how wonderful it was.
The only saving grace was there were a couple of manatees
What is going on in my native land?????

WELL WELL WELL!!!!!!!!!

Maybe like GT peeps, the animals all emigrated??? Yuh done know alyuh like back track and oversees.

I hear they are in New York with the tower towers.

Plus maybe, just maybe, they all dead out by the time that banna grandchildren born and grow.

Or they all escaped as part of politically planned zoo-break

lol lol lol lol lol lol

As kids we too visited the zoo quite often mostly because we were also visiting the beautiful botanical gardens. I enjoyed the birds in the gardens as much as I enjoyed the zoo.
Truth be told, as I grew up I began to have a serious problem with locking birds or animals in cages for our pleasure.
Here in JA, I used to feed the local birds and many that migrated from up north in the winter. One day three birds were at the feeder chirping away and I looked out from my cage (completely grilled) and said looks like you are freer that we humans these days.

I think zoos violate the rights of animals so I am glad there are fewer animals in cages.
I recommend that you take the grandkids to the interior of the country where they can watch not only the country’s breath-taking beauty and wildlife, but also appreciate freedom.
Where we agree is that our societies are in a rapid state of neglect and decline, but that should not be measured by the absence of caged exotic animals.
My two cents.

The number of wild cattle, as you say, is now in the vicinity of 2,000-destruction of which seems to be a rather distressing idea for some of us who may recognise alternative solutions.

Reconsider execution of rogue cattle in Cedros

In T&T they are roaming free in Cedros and terrifying the locals.
They are wild.

What happened to wild animals shouldn't be in cages ? Maybe the Guyanese onto something here, unwittingly or not, who cares if the entitled migrant felt disappointed, maybe he should book a jungle trek and see them in their natural splendor .

There are a few factors at play here:

1. The maintenance of a Zoo is very expensive.

2. They didn't establish a breeding program to replace the animals.

3. It is becoming very difficult and expensive to obtain animals in this environment of animal advocacy.

I can personally attest to the above fact.I saw manatees at the Botanical Gardens in the late 1960's.I lived on Church street just about 3 blocks away.

He expected that the exotic animals that he saw 40 years ago would still be there?

Truth be told, as I grew up I began to have a serious problem with locking birds or animals in cages for our pleasure.

Do you remember how many homes in GT had tons of bird cages with live birds?
My late father never approved of this practice...and he explained birds including parrots and McCaws should be free

As I grew older I understood what he meant

In La Penitence "Punt Trench dam" used to have bird whistling competition every sunday morning...and I beleive men used to make cash bets big grin
