HEADLINE: West Indies name squad for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

CaribbeanCricket.com 2022-09-14 15:57:01

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the West Indies squad for the upcoming International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Men’s T20 World Cup. The panel confirmed the fifteen (15) players who represent the West Indies for the eighth ICC T20 World Cup, which will be played in Australia from October 16 to November 13.

The West Indies are the only team to have won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice, in Sri Lanka in 2012 and in India in 2016. The West Indies campaign to win an unprecedented third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title starts on October 17, when they take on Scotland in first of three Group B fixtures played at the Bellerive Oval, in Hobart, Tasmania to qualify for the Super 12 phase of the tournament. Nicholas Pooran leads the West Indies in his first World Cup as captain, with Rovman Powell as vice-captain.

Left-hand opening batter Evin Lewis has been recalled for the first time since the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. Two uncapped players have been selected; right-arm leg-spinner allrounder Yannic Cariah and left-arm batting allrounder Raymon Reifer.

The Most Honourable Dr. Desmond Haynes, CWI’s Lead Selector said: “We have selected a mixture of youth and experience to represent the West Indies. In the selection process, we have been cognizant of the ongoing CPL and we have been looking at the players who have been playing very well. I said at the beginning of my tenure that I would be interested in giving players the opportunity and I think I have been consistent in doing that. I believe it is a very good team we have selected, and it is a team that will compete, given that we have to qualify from Round 1 into the Super12s.”

I would like the Sargent to tell us why Narine was not selected in view of what Dessie had to say.

anthonyp 2022-09-14 16:04:37

Wtf.. Cariah and Cottrell?

Got no issue with the other picks.. Reifer earned his spot.

StumpCam 2022-09-14 16:05:16

In reply to Narper

Think I would have preferred Fletcher over Charles but I can live with that.
Surprised with Cotterell selection.

Think I would have preferred Fletcher over Charles but I can live with that

Fletcher can get bogged down too easily.

So Charles is fine for me

Avatar 2022-09-14 16:12:41

The pick from left field for me was Cotterell
Notable omissions: Narine, Russell, Allen,
I would have included one of the three in place of Cotterell

StumpCam 2022-09-14 16:14:37

In reply to Avatar

Cotterell is probably a direct replacement for Shepherd.

90mph 2022-09-14 16:14:54

How could there be justification for Evin Lewis who has not been playing cricket for some time versus Andre Russel who has been active in tournaments thru the year and not picked?

Also, Mr. Haynes since when Fabian Allen selection is only predicated on him being a left arm spinner? What about his batting and fielding?

Otherwise i wish them well.
Cariah is a gamble but I understand

Russell?

Russell's being active is what kill him.

I dont have a problem with the Cariah pick...it is just that we will lose the electric fielding of Walsh Jr

Raggs 2022-09-14 16:28:44

Narine n Russell out good ! May that be a lesson to many. Declaring their love for West Indies cricket on the eve of a major tournament, once again.

Think you answered your own question.

Cotty is lucky... he has become predictable and uninventive ...if the CPL is the latest version of him.

Is long time I don’t see a salute. What does that tell you?

It is plain to see that I am slightly surprised. lol lol lol

Windiesfan78 2022-09-14 16:44:08

I am really happy to see Charles being selected. He more than deserves to be in the squad. I am surprised that Allen wasn't included but I am quite fine with Narine and Russell being left out. To walk back into the team just because it is World Cup time ain't cutting it for me. Thank you for the memories, it is time to move forward. Hopefully, Lewis can return to the form he was in prior to not representing the W.I. I believe in second chances and maybe he can settle into the team again. I am ok with Soldier Boy being in the squad. He is a wicket taker and is an asset to the team.

VoopsandOut 2022-09-14 16:46:11

A little surprised at both Cotterell and Lewis, both in on reputation mainly and not recent performance. A little concerned that we do not have a back up keeper but I believe that Charles can take that role if needed. Pooran should prob try to keep for the rest of the CPL. Glad that they did not even consider Russell who is like Pollard and many full time professionals is definitely past it. All in all, the only change I would have made would be Motie or Allen for Cotterell as we have other seamers that are in better form to give us the extra spin option. I feel that there will be very little controversy about this squad

doosra 2022-09-14 16:55:15

Picking Charles and Lewis over Brandon King?

Charles was picked on form and Lewis on past experience because clearly he not in any form?

StumpCam 2022-09-14 17:04:42

I did not notice King was not in! Should have been there ahead of Lewis too! lol lol

Yes that is true when he is fit

But he has not been fully fit for sometime now.

Why didnt he play in today's CPL game Patriots vs Tallawahs?
Dwayne Bravo:
We are going to bowl. Try to take advantage of the new ball. Good enough to play, happy about it. The physio did a great job. Cottrell's out and I come in his place.

Madmax 2022-09-14 17:12:49

In reply to doosra

Will check his stats in a bit, if I had a vote, I was taking Allen ahead of Reifer

doosra 2022-09-14 17:16:04

In reply to Madmax

Allen was out of cricket and his form has been average since coming back. In fact he is not even bowling

Madmax 2022-09-14 17:22:24

In reply to doosra

He has played 3 matches thus far, avg 43 with that bat at a SR of 140, not bad returns. Career wise it’s 19 with the bat at a SR of 107. Didn’t look at his bowling stats. I know they are two different types of players but to me Allen adds that presence in the field plus his lower order hitting might be more valuable than Reifer who isn’t known as a power hitter. If Hosein gets injured we are extremely light in the spin department as well

doosra 2022-09-14 17:23:14

In reply to Madmax

As a spinner Motie is ahead of him so I am not even sure about that

he needs to get his game fully back

Madmax 2022-09-14 17:29:36

Where is Cottrel’s form and where was he playing the last few months?

Lewis coming back to form as I type big grin

Madmax 2022-09-14 17:31:06

In reply to Madmax

I agree Motie ahead of Allen in ODI as a bowler, not so sure about T20

Kay 2022-09-14 17:32:14

I only have one question. Was a fitness test done prior to selecting this squad?

Otherwise i really don't care too much as they are probably the best of the sorry lot.....

Madmax 2022-09-14 17:39:15

In reply to Kay

Provisional squad, they have until October 8th to make changes to the squad. That may give the slackers time to get fit enough big grin

Raskil 2022-09-14 17:39:30

They got it more right than wrong

Not bad at all

natty_forever 2022-09-14 18:00:10

How do you reconcile those 3 statements?

natty_forever 2022-09-14 18:07:12

See Bravo showing why Allen ain't going.

R.Reifer based on what exactly?

Reifer and brooks have the same powerful, influential friends.

ATLEAST one, if not both, MUST be in every WI squad regardless of format.

Raskil 2022-09-14 18:11:59

In reply to natty_forever

I disagree WRT past squads

I strongly believe past captains had more say and you know how that frenship business works.

Pooran probably removed himself from having much say.

Smart and fair move.

StumpCam 2022-09-14 18:24:42

Have you actually seen Reifer in 6ixty and CPL???
Very matured batting! Deserve his place without a doubt!

Yes. I disagree

Man quit the BS.

Reifer thoroughly deserved a pick based on performance and commitment

Sylobaby 2022-09-14 19:43:54

Let me start by praying that we get qualified first. It’s the worse World Cup squad ever picked by the West Indies and should we fail to qualify or don’t get to the quarterfinals Sir Desmond Haynes should not even wait for us to call for his resignation. Russia would no doubt be on any of the top teams in the world though he hasn’t been in the best of form. Yet he is not on one of the worse teams that’s yet to qualify? Meanwhile, Raymond Reifer is on the team? We just played a series of T20 games against Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Africa and Reifer was not good enough to be on the team but because he had a decent CPL you picking him ahead of a proven veteran like Russet? Russ can score against any bowler and can still bowl in his 90’s man

Castled 2022-09-14 19:49:24

In reply to Sylobaby

Russ can score against any bowler

Not last night.

Holder sold him a dummy.

It was not a good look

Sylobaby 2022-09-14 19:53:20

Russet for Reifer, Allen for Cariah, Rutherford for Charles since Pooran and King are wicketkeepers and Shepherd instead of Cottrell would definitely give us a better chance of going all the way! Did our selectors forget the World Cup will be on the fast and bouncy wickets of Australia and not on the dead pitches of the Caribbean? Oh boy Desmond Haynes is getting from bad to worse with his performance ahead of skill policy

Brerzerk 2022-09-14 20:14:22

The batting is very suspect, Dessie n Fill are doing too much, chopping, changing and trying out for what
is supposed to be a World Championship Tournament Squad

VIX 2022-09-14 20:38:43

So Pooran is the 2nd specialist spinner? lol

doosra 2022-09-14 20:52:03

In reply to VIX

Cariah is
big grin big grin

he not even in your best format club team

mkcharles 2022-09-14 21:54:28

So basically,

REifer = Russell
Cariah = Narine
Cottrell = Shepherd
Charles = Fletcher

That being the case, then no problem and i wish them all the best.

- Cottrell perhaps fortunate, but none of the other seam bowlers we have tried can perform that primary role;
- Walsh will pull up no trees so Cariah is a non issue and is a more talented cricketer every day;
- no issues with Charles as what you see is what you get;
- Reifer is no prime DreRuss but really replaces Allen which again is neither here or there.

doosra 2022-09-14 21:57:11

Cotterel got pace and in Australia maybe that was the consideration but like the others he can travel on a bad day

Not sure why no Allen, this must be a mistake by the selectors, especially if you are omitting Russell.
