FIVE WEST Indians were picked when a total of 314 players went under the hammer in the inaugural South Africa T20 League (SA20) auction, bringing to nine the number of Caribbean cricketers chosen for the January-February 2023 tournament.

Antiguan fast bowler Alzarri Joseph was the most expensive buy of the five, sold to Johannesburg Super Kings for R2.1 million (US$118,353). The franchise had signed all-rounder Romario Shepherd before Monday’s auction here.

Jamaican all-rounder Odean Smith was the only West Indian acquired by MI Cape Town. He went for R1.7 million (US$95,810) in the auction.

All-rounder Keemo Paul of Guyana and St Lucian wicketkeeper/batsman Johnson Charles will join previously drafted Barbadians Jason Holder and Kyle Mayesrs at Durban Super Giants. Paul and Charles were bought for R850,000 (US$47,905) and R425,000 (US$23,952), respectively.

Barbadian pacer Ramon Simmonds was acquired at a price of R175,000 (US$9,862) and will join Vincentian left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy, who was selected before the auction, at the Paarl Royals.

Among the West Indies players on the auction list who went unsold were Carlos Brathwaite, Roston Chase, Brandon King, Jayden Seales, Lendl Simmons, Hayden Walsh Jr, and Shai Hope.

I am very happy for Joseph, it’s about time he eat food. However, surprised about the non selection of King, Simmonds or Hope. The teams seem to be looking for allrounders but what about Chase?

I am happier with the signing of young Simmons. He gets an opportunity to bowl on fast wickets with bounce and if he does well can get opportunities in List A and first class cricket in the region. He is an exciting prospect for the future.

WI players should be limited to only 3 franchise T 20 leagues, including the CPL..Our top players therefore can play CPL,IPL and only 1 other league.

THIS is what LEADERSHIP is all about my friend.

You call in the player and his agent and have a frank discussion about the realities of life. You first ascertain what the priorities of the player are.I saw a discussion between Alzharry and Curtly where Curtly said that at the end of the day it is TEST CRICKET that determines your place in history and more importantly ALZHARRY AGREED.Now having him think along those lines you have to assure him as to how valuable CWI sees him in their future plans.CLEARLY he is our bowling TRUMP CARD. He is the man to lead the WI attack for the next 5 years and his success will determine WI success.Any limits on his T 20 franchise exploits has to be seen as CWI protecting our leading fast bowler's future in test cricket.

btw I also think the same could be explored for some of the batters playing first class cricket. but again things are different and players are keen to secure their future sooner than later.

is it a stretch to think the CWI can offer multi-year contracts to some of the players they identify as critical to the next cycle - say 3-5 years instead of year by year? Maybe around 500K - 1M ? This way they can meet the players halfway by guaranteeing them something beyond the short term?

500k - 1m is not too much more than they are presently offering per year but it is guaranteed money

Mayers for sure should have teams knocking on his door as an allrounder, unless his name wasn’t entered on the auction, agents can make or break you.
