FIRST TEST SQUAD
In reply to Emir
That should be the team. I am looking to Joseph to be the key bowler
in this series. He is maturing very well and if he hits the right length on the Aussie pitches he
will be more than a handful.
Hiss batting potential will be valuable too.
And from i saw of Tage's innings today in the FC match,I believe he will be pretty ok against a
more stern and quality attack.
WI could surprise at the new Perth Stadium.
The day/night at Adelaide will be a helluva challenge tho.
In reply to Emir
That will be the XI, but I think they will go with Bonner at 3, Blacks at 4, Mayers at 5. Chase doesn't deserve a place in the XI but is the only spinner.
I've got a feeling that Brooks not playing in this match will see him in the test xi, whether it's at the expense of Bonner or Chase, I'm not sure.
In reply to Emir
Reifer should be given a chance instead of Bonner, he will show more fight
I would give Brooks a go instead of Bonner
In reply to jacksparrow
I agree, I said before I don't think Bonner will score in Austrila
In reply to Emir
The way Head Coach & management thinks....
Braithwaite
Tage
Reifer
Brooks
Blackwood
Mayers
Holder
Silva
Chase
Joseph
Roach
Seales
This 12 players....Reifer/ Mayers/ Chase any two......
In reply to Onionman0
Here's where you digress from this thread:
1. The purpose is to select 11, not the 12th man as it won't matter who that person is.
So please pick your 11.
2. You cannot be serious about Reifer? He can barely make the Barbados first 11, but you have him in our test team.
In reply to Emir
I'd use Shamar Brooks over Bonner - right now.
In reply to Onionman0
The experimentation of Reifer batting at #3 should be over.
Roach
Joseph
Seales
Holder
Mayers
Chase
Brathwaite 1-2 overs before breaks, should be the line up for bowlers.
In reply to openning
Joseph
Seales
Holder
Mayers
Chase
Brathwaite
Are you over-confident? or over-rating our players? How do you justify going into a test match with 7 players?

I can't agree more with you..... Reifer should never bat in top 6.....but as I said, Simmons and management believes in extreme idiocy.... Moreover, in practice matches both Brooks & Tage has scored runs....it would be prudent that
Braithwaite
Tage
Brooks occupies 1-3 positions.....
In reply to Onionman0
People, Tage was selected to replace Campbell, lets leave the opening positions alone.
I believe Brooks selection was to replace any injury to Bonner or Blackwood.
Chase is the only spinner selected, so his selection for the two tests, is guarantee.
In reply to openning
Why should Chase's selection be guaranteed? On many occasions, Motie, Permaul, or Bishoo were the only spinner selected in their respective squads yet their selection was never guaranteed. They were often left out in favour of a 5th seam bowling option, as was what transpired in the last test against Bangladesh.
Shoe-horning Brooks and Chase in without dropping Bonner or Seales is going to be the big dilemma for them.
In reply to WICFan
Agree with you but you know how things could shake out with who is in charge .
Reifer aint get a bat yet and Thomas gets another game while Blackwood who needs
the time at the wicket, is not playing this match.
Can't figure out some moves. But Tage must play and open too.
In reply to Seechy
Why would you select one spinner, and not play him?
Can the pacers bowl 90 overs in a day?
I would just take Reifer out of Onion's team and that is my starting XI. ii have more confidence in Brooks than in Bonner against a pace attack.
In reply to openning
EXACTLY! The same questions should be asked when the aforementioned spinners were left out for an extra pacer in the past. Chase is only a part-time spinner and the fact he is playing ahead of the specialist spinner Motie is mind-boggling and frustrating!!!
In the LAST Test WI played, they went with an attack of Roach, Seales, Joseph, Phillip, Mayers, and Reifer. Isn't that an overkill of medium-fast seam bowlers? Where was the spinner? Where was the balance in the attack? Why was Motie dropped? Why was Chase selected ahead of him for the Australia tour? What is going on in the selector's heads? Not play the specialist spinner in the last test, drop him for the next series and replace him with a part-time spinner who has done jack with the bat...can you not see the hypocrisy at play? It is doing harm to a young player's confidence. The specialist spinner should have at least been in the squad.
In reply to Yadi
Brooks cannot play in front of Bonner for the first test.
In reply to openning
Who said it was an experiment?
This head coach and management team have clearly shown they believe Reifer is the genuine #3 batsman for WI in test cricket.
That is unlikely to change. Maybe a different head coach and management team will feel differently. Until then, youre stuck with Viv Reifer
As for Brooks, Mayers, Bonner, Thomas, Blackwood?
Pick any combo. It wont matter.
Chase has powerful friends. The only reason hes in the squad.
The merit first XI
Brathwaite
Chanderpaul

Anybody
Holder
Anybody
Thomas
Joseph
Roach
Seales
***Anybody = any of Blackwood, Bonner, Mayers, Brooks, Reifer, Chase***. Theyre all practically the same
I selected Thomas over DaSilva because he is the better keeper and a toss up as to who is the better batsman. Right now, Thomas appears to have more form than Josh.
Seales also better watch out. Worryingly, he hasnt taken a wicket so far on tour. At least Phillip has. Seales will play due to greater experience and is at this time a better bowler. He just might be out of form though.
In reply to imusic
since when is Thomas a better keeper than Silva? As far as I can see, he rarely keeps. I think that he deserves real consideration in the final XI as a batsman and will probably mix it up with Brooks and Bonner for the final batting spot (assuming Mayers is a sure pick). Of the 3, i would place Bonner 3rd in line. He has not been convincing against good quality fast bowling, ie. he has been the most unconvincing of the batting order. I agree that Motie should probably have gone to Oz before Chase but we are stuck with Chase for reasons that noone has really explained and so he plays to give the team balance (of a sort).

Bonner badly out of form. Thomas looks composed at the crease. Some rash shots but he can score runs.
In reply to WIForever
I endorse this team, I think Thomas deserves a chance. Bonner's form of late has not been good at all. Furthermore, Thomas provides an extra bowling option.
In reply to imusic
Mayers has had very good recent series with either bat or ball.
Thomas maybe a better keeper..certainly not a better test batsman
Seales is transitioning from a top prospect to a solid reliable bowler
Blackwood as vice captain is showing more grit and determination
In reply to Emir
Why not? Bonnets sell buy date has passed
Bonner and Chase are walking wickets. So badly out of touch with this concept called batting. Meyers looks like he could get out anytime after a few camera pose shots. Real problems in that middle order.
In reply to imusic Very good analysis on the playing X1 at the moment.
It is ironic that the certain starters are the bowlers our batting is poor especially on hard pitches with a bit of bounce
Thomas is a better keeper than Dasilva and probably a better batsman but I think the management team will play DaSilva
Of the anybodies Chase will probably play because we need a spinner, the others put them in a hat a pull 3.
In reply to LeggullyChase will probably play because we need a spinner
You will still need a spinner after Chase is picked.

Phil Simmons knows this is his last time being in charge. He may decide to stick to his guns and his gut
This is the XI & batting order I believe Sinmons will go with

Reifer is unfortunately injured, Gabriel on the way to OZ as a replacement
In reply to imusic
Wait music, where is Mayers in that lineup? So Reifer makes the cut but not the man that destroyed England in the test series. Kindly look over that list and make the necessary correction!
In reply to Windiesfan78
Read the post carefully
Phil will decide on whether Mayers or Brooks plays
Phil is in love with Brooks
This is his penultimate match with West Indies. Hell sink or swim with who he truly believes is best
He has absolutely nothing to lose.
A squad with 6 genuine world class players: Braitwait, Da Silver,Holder, Roach, Joseph, and Thomas
Plus one promising world class player Chanderpaul
And all remaining experimental players....with No genuine No 3 (your best batsman) and a weak middle order
Up against a top ranking genuinely world class Australia.
I guess Its only a matter of short order before ICC steps in as the region continues to neglect fundamental issues and struggle in the mire at the top.
For me, Thomas gets to play but I have him as a batsman. it will be either him or Brooks at No.3. I cannot see the team playing without Mayers so he slots in at No. 5 for me and Blackwood gets more responsibility at NO. 4. Everyone else virtually picks himself bar injury: Braff, Tage, Silva, Holder, Roach, Joseph, Chase and Seales. i accept all the comments about Chase but on his day, he makes a contribution and he did well enough in the ODI competition before leaving for the tour. He plays at least in the first test for me. On paper, this team looks as strong as we can possibly get with only perhaps Motie for Chase in an ideal world.
In reply to imusic
....but music, note I didn't mention Brooks, it is Reifer who shouldn't make the team before Mayers. Take note of my reply. Simmons won't leave Mayers out of the team, which still leaves room for Mr. Brooks.
Why is everyone sold on Paint and Tage opening?
This is the CWI and with that cabal stranger things have happened ....
In reply to Kay
Any suggestion on who should replace Campbell?
In reply to imusic
Don't get carried away with Reifer, he will not be selected, neither will Blackwood or Bonner.
In reply to openning
I presume thats a typo
Unless hes injured he will be the 2nd name listed in the starting lineup

A squad with 6 genuine world class players: Braitwait, Da Silver,Holder, Roach, Joseph, and Thomas
1. I think you mean borderline world class (Holder/Roach)
2. Quite decent (Brathwaite/DaSilva)
3. Decent (Joseph)
4. Now Thomas - you need to put down the rum. On which planet is Thomas "genuine world class"? Not even VOR would agree with that and he is as pro-small island as they come.
If they play Bonner, they'll be playing with 10 men!
Brathwaite
Chanderpaul
Brooks
Thomas

Agree this is the strongest possible middle order with this squad.
In reply to DIEHARD
Pack the team with 11 batters..... still lose....needs bowlers to bowl out opposite!!!!..... Seales plays.... it's bowlers win matches....this time around, we have a decent bowling attack.....since Ambrose & Walsh retirement.... whether they succeed or fail.... another matter....I would have included Gabriel.....
Paint
Tage
Brooks
Bonner
Blackwood
Mayers
Holder

Seales
In reply to DIEHARD
I agree with other posters that Seales must play. Roach, Aljo and Jaysea are the three attacking bowlers. I am not convinced that Holder or Mayers will be very effective but perhaps the bounce will help both. From your team, Seales is in and either Thomas or Brooks sits. I would go for Thomas before Brooks for the first test simply because he has been more consistent in recent times at FC and List A levels. I would ideally like both to play but it would mean that Chase or Mayers sits and the team becomes imbalanced. I do like the batting order that you propose with Silva coming in before Chase and Holder but I would bat Mayers at #5 before Silva.
In reply to VoopsandOut
Holder is among the best Test Allrounders, see below Mayers last test inning, you don't drop a player for a test match, from non performance in White ball cricket.

I edited to replace Chase with Seales.
I had my XI down left DaSilva out ..updated and made the wrong change...
Blackwood and Brathwaite better work on their bowling on the nets.
Don't see why Chase should play as a spinner, both Brooks and Thomas play before Chase for me
In reply to openning
I meant effective as bowlers. I do not see similarities between the Grenada pitch and a Perth pitch but who knows if it is windy, both may enjoy bowling from a specific end. We will see. I was not advocating that either be omitted from the starting XI.

I have the same team, but batting Blackie at 4, Bonner at 5. We need a combative batsman at 4.
The team is exactly as I predicted.
i cant believe that they have gone with Bonner before Thomas who is in form or Brooks who has class. Unless he has been playing dead to ketch Corbeau alive, we cannot expect any contribution from him and prob a couple dropped catches to boot.
