ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced a new innovation for the long format of the game, with the addition of a triangular red-ball tournament to start at the end of the West Indies Championship in April, 2023.  The new Headley Weekes Series will feature three matches and three teams. Team Headley and Team Weekes will be selected from the best performers in the 2023 West Indies Championship and players outside the starting West Indies Test XI. The new West Indies Academy will provide the third team in the new Series.

Team Headley and Team Weekes are named in honour of West Indies pioneers and legendary batting greats George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes, whose names are also honoured on the Trophy for the winners of the West Indies Championship. The matches will be played from 18 April to 6 May at Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) in Antigua.

why not add the wi academy to the full championship

For years I have been advocating for a North vs South post competition that would serve as trial matches for the senior teams. I am pleased to see something similar, although I would not have included the academy since we want the best of the North (Jamaica Leewards Windwards) vs. Best of the South (Barbados/Trinidad Guyana) Barbados and Windwards could switch places if needed.
Of course you can select the 30 best players and manually divide them into two equally strong teams

That would have been my preference with the Champions taking on a West Indies 'B' side in a best of 3, 5 day match series.

This madness won't be happening.....the administration would be kicked out by March....

The 4- day tournament should be....
1. Home- Away or two rounds
2. Add one or two teams..
3. The winner of the tournament, should play Best of the Tournament players ...in 5 day match...
4. Season must start just after White ball tournament..., continue for 6 months
That would justify 90 players payroll..no use extending 90 players to 110 players...not playing enough to correct players mental and technical .....

This regime should have shame and stop eyewash and farce !!!!

Great to see that CWI is actually adapting a recommendation that was made by myself and others on the Board to provide more experience and exposure to regional players outside of the test team. I further recommended that the current WI test team should play at least two matches with each regional team before a formal WI test team selection. I also advocated in past posts about the North vs South matches, for WI test team players have not done anything to warrant complacency, in fact they should be fighting for their respective positions with other regional players, maybe this could result in more consistent players’ performances, just knowing that there is another player eagerly competing for your position.

Also West Indies A-team and B- team international tours should not only be scheduled more frequently but utilized as long term training for players outside of the test team, while providing international exposure and experience.

So More of the same....Right.

The CWI can listen to the best advice and select part of it and implement it all wrong.
I agree, you have 6 x 15 contracted players that need to play 10 matches fc matches a year. You don't reduce the majority to 5 matches and select 30 out of the 90 to play 2 more matches as a trials. That is nonsense. The CWI is actively showing the majority of cricketers, that they are not interested in their development but only want the "best", in other words, the CWI is only interested in picking a team. The majority is the foundation of our system and by marginalizing them, the system will collapse. So now our fc is reduced, our test are reduced .. so player will focus on ever and any T20 and T20 that they can find.

What needs to be improved is out pitches. To improve the quality of the cricket played ... Not reduced matches.
