ormer West Indies fast bowler Sir Andy Roberts says coaching is being made a scapegoat for the team's failures.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) recently appointed Andre Coley as its interim head coach ahead of the team's tour of South Africa next month.
After unfavourable results at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup late last year, CWI did an internal investigation of the team's performance. Phil Simmons then announced he would resign from the role after a tour of Australia, which also produced poor results.
The Windies team has had frequent coaching changes in the last two decades in response to poor results, a trend similar to other sporting teams, especially football. But critics of this say that cricket is different from other sports in nature, and coaches do not have the same impact on tactics.
"That's exactly what they're doing," Roberts told the Jamaica Observer in response to whether coaches are being used as a scapegoat for bad results. "They have someone to blame, they're blaming the coaches. How come we didn't make five changes for the one-day international (ODI) team? We lost 2-0 in Australia; how come we didn't make five changes to the Test team?

For Roberts, the real issue is player development. He says too many players in the selection pool lack an understanding of the fundamentals of cricket. He says, although a coach of the senior team may be important for executing daily training drills, coaches are needed to teach the fundamentals at the grass-roots level, but enough attention is not being placed there.
"We have to get this right and try to develop our players from Under-15s up to the senior level," he said. "They are the ones who have to get it right. That is where you need your best coaches, not at the Test match level. At that level, you need somebody who can plan the game, who has an eye for the game and I don't think that we have too many students of the game playing today."
Roberts shouldn't have too many detractors here.

you would praise roberts if he said one plus one is two. The only correct thing s he says are the facts that are plainly obvious to everybody else. His other contributions are caustic, full of his own insecurities and less than useless

You seem to be unable to walk and chew gum at the same time, our just maybe, wearing your T&T uniform.
One can speak about Phil, and still speak about what's needed at the Grass root level.
Phil should had been fired, immediately after the World Cup.

Andy a great player....80's..... Coaching have drastically changed with the extreme advancement of technology.... Coaches are now highly paid professional.... working across country..... West Indies player are not properly coached at the highest level...
Take the case of Roston Chase....A batter started with bang....was averaging in mid 45.... century against England in fast pitch, against India & Pakistan...playing spinners with aplomb...then came slide...coach & management fails to rectify technical glitches.... Chase now a spinner... selected as spinner...
Pooran....a brilliant prospect....a wicket keeper batsman... scores century in World Cup... averaging above 45...then came slide... instead of rectifying glitches.....he started bowling off spin...
Good coach absolutely necessary....in modern era... Roberts time- wrapped....

Good personal coaching is. But do you expect that the WI team coach to do all this personalized coaching?
He can obviously identify flaws and even that may be too much given his overall role
It seems to me that is where the batting coach comes in but he too can only do so much, in so far as when test cricket is being played or when there are camps.
What about when that is over and the player returns home?
The player must bear some responsibility and get personalized coaching in line / coordination with team coach

phil wasn't the problem......I know you guys have an issue with TT since the collapse of the federation, which you erroneously attribute to us. but these are the facts.
phil has been dealing with the most talentless group of WI cricketers in a generation. The guys that were actually quality, like darren bravo, chris gayle,dj bravo, rampaul, ramdin and others were exiled and he was suspended when he attempted to pick them. Phil clearly wasn't the problem. And because WICB admins display the most incredulous stupidity imaginable, they did not anticipate that holder's second string all stars would become the first team the longer they exiled the first team. its not rocket science

I fully agree that players do have responsibilities for personal improvement and development....
The player must bear some responsibility and get personalized coaching in line / coordination with team coach
My emphasis ......both Chase and Pooran started to concentrate on bowling at the instance of TEAM COACH instead of rectifying technical glitches ???
Pooran was bowling full quota of 10 overs in ODIs and Chase was bowling 20-25 overs per innings....how can a "TEAM COACH" justify that at top level....
Now compare.... Australia....Jason Gillespie was dropped after he scored double century....as he was failing as strike bowler...his primary role in team.....
In West Indies... Recently concluded Australia tour...Chase selected as spinner in the team... batting at 8....... madness magnified...
International cricket team requires qualified , credible, highly technology oriented coaching to succeed at the highest level......not only to strengthen its own players but also analyse and exploit opponent players weaknesses...which West Indies lacks.....
