This team selection is very poor.....it might or not succeed against Zimbabwe......but against top team, will implode......too many half cricketers....Chase, Mayers, Reifer...non can bat nor can bowl against top teams...

Solid day thus far from W.I. 112/0 is a great start although it would be nice if the run rate was higher. Paint was fortunate not to be given out for a delivery that looked like it would have hit the stumps. To be fair, DRS should be standard in any international match. Zimbabwe will feel hard done by the decision. Hopefully, Paint and Tage can go on to make big scores. I certainly hope that Tage will use this opportunity to get his maiden test century.

When dem man out you can still get your wish! lol

Windiesfan78 2023-02-04 13:30:41

In reply to sudden

You can't be serious sudden. Yes the run rate could be higher but it is a solid start. Time spent at the crease is important and the more time Zimbabwe is in the field, the easier it becomes to score. We should be looking to make a huge total, putting our opponents under pressure. If you said 250/5 I would take that but not 250/9. Also, Taylor and Raza are out of the squad due to injury which means their batting has been weakened. Despite this, NEVER underestimate an opponent. It is imperative that we get a strong first innings score.

What really is the plan

Coach's instructions.

New guy has the job on a temp basis and i am sure he is planning to keep it permanently. Losing against Zim will not enhance that plan and at worse a draw may suffice.

The plan is to put yourself in a position where you can't lose first then go for the win at the back end.

Did i get it right? smile

10:10 am: The umpires are out for an inspection. The pitch and the square looks fine, but they seem to be a bit worried about the outfield.

10 am: Better news, almost all the covers have been removed now. Only the pitch remains under a blue sheet and tarpaulins. The sun is trying to break out, but there's a massive band of dark clouds moving towards the ground. Hopefully, it'll not bring any rain

Steeeewps.

What's the possibility of play happening today?" The sky looks bright, and the pitch and square seem fine, but I think it's the outfield that needs to dry out properly. We might see some cricket take place today in Bulawayo.

batsiejeff: "I live next to the ground. Loads of rain last night hence the wet outfield. Today not so much rain around. Tomorrow and Tuesday will bright and Sunny.. Hot even.. It's been an above normal rainy season this.. Wettest i have seen in a long time."

Lol @ rain flakes. Question is, how will this affect the match? Will we see any play today?

shivnotout 2023-02-05 11:09:14

In reply to Chrissy

12:55 pm: The umpires have come and gone. Not much has changed since the previous inspection and strangely, not much has been done to try and dry the outfield. We haven't had any rain but a few patches don't look great and certainly not fit for play. The groundstaff have been sat motionlessly at the pitch for a while now and at this rate, it's hard imagining the situation will change. Even as some players take to the nets at the far end and a couple bowlers go through their motions on a practice surface, there isn't any great news to report on I'm afraid. Official word is that there will be another inspection at 1:45 pm.

They have to be very careful, because in the Zimbabwe line up is Gary Ballance, who's previously played 23 Tests for England at an average of 37, which is higher than most of our batsmen.

I would suggest batting until tea on tomorrow's third day, and then putting Zimbabwe in.

I'm elated for Tage on scoring his maiden test century. Well played young man! Well deserved and I am happy to see that he has grasped the opportunity with both hands. Here's hoping this is the first of many. Fans have been crying out for a solid opener to partner with Paint and Tage has answered the call thus far. I'm sure Shiv is extremely pleased with the progress of his son.

With 3 days left barring any rain, the W.I should be looking to add another 200 runs at the very least and declare at tea. Apparently, I thought Raza was injured but he is presently playing in Dubai for Dubai Capitals.

In the quest for quick runs tomorrow let's see what happens....

Solid but slow partnership has laid concrete foundations.

jacksparrow 2023-02-05 18:53:49

This is their style but the pitch as we have heard is not conducive to strokeplay, added to that rain etc,so 221 in 89 odd overs is not bad for a days work.Pretty sure they will look to score a bit quicker tmrw for 2 sessions and start on the opposition by tea thereabouts.
On another note, I see Reifer is padded up to come no 3- I mean is management seeing something different than all the west Indian fans? Incredulous.

WICFan 2023-02-05 18:57:15

If they can go along at at least 3 rpo for 60 overs then they could have a session+ tomorrow while defending 400 from the 1st innings.

Alzarri Joseph to Tanunurwa Makoni, out Caught by Mayers!! Makoni's hard work has been undone and he only has himself to blame! Joseph's introduction yields instant rewards for the West Indies. He pitches it up full and wide outside off, Makoni goes for a flashing drive away from his body and all he can manage is a thick outside edge that's safely pouched by Mayers at first slip.

Motie to Chibhabha, out Caught by Joshua Da Silva!! This is such a soft dismissal! Another bowling change works for WI. Quicker delivery from Motie, skids off the deck and Chibhabha misreads the length. Hangs back to a delivery which he should have been forward to. Looks to force this through the off-side and gets the faintest of edges through to the keeper. Sharp take from Joshua Da Silva as well. So, after a solid opening stand, Zimbabwe have lost quick

wickets. Chibhabha c Joshua Da Silva b Motie 9(22) [4s-2]

Important wicket that.
We need to start tomorrow after Kraigg completes his over with Alzharry and Motie and later Mayers to replace Alzharry after a 5 over spell.I have no confidence in the others.

Seechy 2023-02-07 10:27:24

In reply to Windiesfan78

I think they may not take the new ball straight away and see if the spinners can take the remaining wickets, so the seamers will be fresh if the follow-on is enforced. I notice Holder and Mayers haven't bowled much, so they should be fine for the 2nd innings.

If the follow-on is saved or the seamers are needed to clean up the tail, then I suspect we will bat for another 30-40 overs to get the lead up to 350-400 then have another crack at Zim tonight. Tomorrow is likely to be a curtailed day, so if we can get 2-3 2nd innings wickets tonight that will help.

In reply to Osmond

Yup, that's what I'm saying. 192/7 and there is a chance of rain tomorrow. I think Zimbabwe will get the lead under 200 forcing us to bat again. We seem to have a problem polishing off the tail.

Seechy 2023-02-07 15:32:27

In reply to doosra

Very disappointing today. I don't think we'll get all the overs in tomorrow because of predicted rain.

I think they might just bat out the day so guys can get some time in the middle, otherwise they'd need to go bolder to force a result. Stokes and co did this against us in the 2nd test in 2020 - one that we should have drawn.

Score 130 runs in 20 overs, setting Zim 220 in a theoretical 68 overs. Have a crack before lunch, then push hard in the remaining two sessions. Say we lose 60-90 mins due to rain, that would leave roughly 50 overs to try and bowl out Zim again. Only problem with this plan would be if the rain didn't come, then Zim would have enough overs to comfortably chase down the target, but I think it's worth dangling the carrot.

I'll be honest with you. I would rather a washout tomorrow based on what happened today. We had Zimbabwe 192/7 and we ALLOWED them to declare on 379/9. The fact that we couldn't even bowl them out rubbed more salt into the wound. No disrespect to Zimbabwe but this is not good enough. Many of their players are inexperienced. To make matters worse there is no Raza or Taylor in their tean which makes them weaker.

Roston Chase to Chibhabha, out Caught by Blackwood!! The bowling change does the trick! Blackwood takes a superb catch to send Chibhabha packing. Not the best of balls to be honest. It's on a length outside off, holding its line. Chibhabha's feet go nowhere as he feels for it and gets an outside edge that flies towards Blackwood at first slip. He gets low to his right and takes a sharp reflex catch. Those are never easy but he made it look easy.

Motie to Ervine, out Caught by Joshua Da Silva!! That's a sharp take from Joshua Da Silva and Zimbabwe will be feeling the nerves now! Tossed up on a length on off, spinning in sharply. Ervine with minimal foot movement tries to glance it fine but only manages to get a faint nick behind. The keeper moves to his right and takes a very good catch. Would have been unsighted as the ball spun sharply but he was alert to the situation and took a fine, fine catch. West Indies are sensing something now.

Motie to Gary Ballance, leg byes, FOUR, oh that's a good delivery! Floated up full outside off, Ballance leans in looking to defend and it turns sharply, it takes a bit of Ballance's pad and beats everyone behind the stumps

Roston Chase to Gary Ballance, out Caught by Joshua Da Silva!! Right on cue - Roston Chase is the man who gets the better of Ballance. A glimmer of hope for the Windies to force a win. On a length, going down with the arm, Ballance tries to glance it fine but only manages a faint edge behind and the keeper does the rest. Is there a twist at the fag end of the game?

Motie will do some serious damage on a pitch that gives him more assistance. He is our best option for spin at the moment.
