ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel named two newcomers, Alick Athanaze and Akeem Jordan, in the 15-member squad for the upcoming two-Test Series against South Africa. Athanaze, the left-handed batter is the captain of Windward Islands Volcanoes while Jordan, the right-arm seam bowler plays for Barbados Pride. Both have demonstrated good form in the first two rounds of the current four-day West Indies Championship. Athanaze had scores of 41 and 51 against Trinidad & Tobago Red Force in Round 1 and followed up with a career-best 141 against Guyana Harpy Eagles in Round 2. He is a product of the West Indies Under 19s Rising Stars where he was one of the stand-out players at the 2018 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup. Jordan had match figures of 5-86 against Guyana and followed up with 7-113 against Jamaica Scorpions to be one of the leading wicket-takers in the West Indies Championship after two rounds of matches. Athanaze and Jordan replace left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican and batter Nkrumah Bonner who were part of the squad for the just-concluded series in Zimbabwe. Jayden Seales is unavailable for selection following a knee injury and subsequent surgery, while Anderson Philiip has returned to training but is not yet match-fit.

When you got a player who is 34-year-old and aint done jack shoit throughout his entire career; what makes you think he is suddenly going to do Jack!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is Darren Bravo omitted 
Everything is at it's lowest point in West Indies cricket. Desmond Haynes who is one of the greatest players of all times is a total dunce in his current role.
The dropping of Bonner proves that there is no point in trying to achieve a higher batting average in WI cricket, when you could be dropped and others with lower averages retained, sounds like a rationale for WI continued self-destruction due to mis-management of players. Then as soon as the rookie fails, he is promptly dropped and we bring back the old but new player. No developmental planning for players just an ad hoc system of player rotation, not a systemic program for coaching and psychological motivation for players.
Desmond Haynes will go down as the worse chief selector West Indies ever had. How do you drop Nkrumah Bonner at age 34, with an average of 36.5 after 15 tests and try to convert Riefer, a night watchman to bat at number 3? Can you imagine Westindies losing a wicket in the first over and Riefer comes down as the new batsman?
I really welcome Alick Athanaze on the team because I feel he should have been there longtime. However, he should have replaced Riefer who is not a test batsman and if Bonner had to be replaced due to injury then Daren Bravo, the best batsman in the region, with 2 centuries and a 70 in his two games so far should have been called since the confused Desmond Haynes keeps preaching performance. I do hope that Alick Athanaze becomes the automatic choice to bat at number 3 in South Africa and Riefer becomes the water carrier
