human trafficking

An Indian businessman who forced an Indian man to perform domestic labour in his home for three years without pay after he was recruited to come to Jamaica was this morning sentenced to 10 years in prison for human trafficking.

Roshan Shegure was also ordered to serve five years for concealment of travel documents.

The sentences are, however, to run concurrently.

Enough of dis caste slavery! Tenk you judge Pusey!

In the USA, there are thousands of them waiting to go to jail, this problem is now an American problem: Many well off Indian immigrants ilegally bring in poor Indian women as domestic help and once here in the USA, what follows is human bondage and slavery.

And they keep doing it and they see no problem with it as these poor women form "low caste" are not considered as full human.

Justice Judith Pusey, in handing down the sentences, also ordered that the victim be compensated in the amount of US$18,337.

That seems like an UNFAIR compensation though. Should be a lot more.

Btw, some illegal Guyanese in Trinidad, and other countries, also had their passports confiscated by their employers and forced to work.

His wife, Danett, who was convicted for facilitating human trafficking, was ordered to pay $1 million or serve three years.

That fine money should also go to the victim.

Not just the USA either
That said there was a Jamaican couple who were being kept as slaves in Texas by white people - same seizure of passport and denial of freedom.

Still this is a serious global caste problem. Glad to see a serious sentence. Can't believe a Jamaican born woman went along with this.

Caste may be a factor but this is kidnapping and human trafficking in any context.
