Mayers is so good with the ball
In reply to brians_da_best
Now you notice that?????
2-24
3-28
3-24
2-13
5-18
2-10
2-30
2-35
and now he takes 3-32 and you figure that out?????
and this is his 18th test match????
Mayers as a part time bowler but recently a full time bowler is averaging 19...a better bowling average than all the WI great fast bowlers...so how can u dismiss that?
I am happy to see Brathwaite also recognizing Reifer as a bowler....either Brathwaite is a dunce captain OR Reifer was injured and sufficiently recovered to bowl.
when he started he was a full fledged bowler on pitches that offer something he can be quite a handful even though he does not have pace

Can Reifer turn to a Steve Waugh

Mayers started his test career against Bangladesh batting at no.5......he was promoted to no.4.......after starting with bang....his batting average after 18 test matches has plunged to 33...
Mayers bowls as first change..... when the ball is new... Braithwaite uses him for 4-5 overs....if he gets wickets...he bowls another spell....if not, all other bowlers would bowl till the second new ball is available.... again, Mayers will bowl as first change....he hardly bowls with old ball ......I can't remember him bowling 14-20 overs, even when West Indies bowls more than 100 overs....
That he don't have to score any runs
New ball ...And Mayers bowls....

Here is something I suggest you do.
Go over the career of Jacques Kallis and you will notice the similarity to Mayers in terms of his bowling. The reason why Kallis' bowling average is only 32 is because he has numerous episodes of taking 1-10 and 2-24 and such figures. He rarely bowled 20 or more overs regardless as to how many runs the opposition scored. He had people like Donald and Pollock early on and then successively Ntinin,Steyn,Morkel, and Philander and even Mel bowled more than he did.Never one of the top bowlers in world cricket but over the years taking a few wickets here and there..
In 166 tests he took 292 wickets that is less than 2 wickets per test.Mayers has 33 wickets in 18 tests.

Stop right there.
The comparison makes no sense until you show data.
Reifer is 31 years, and has played 6 test matches, Steve Waugh test career started at 20 years old, Reifer's career is at the backend and he is now starting his test career. A better comparison was Waugh's first 5 years in comparison to Reifer's 5 years.
He has played less than ten matches since starting his test career.
The comparison makes no sense.

Both Kallis and Mayers primary role in the team ,.....score runs......Kallis batted at no.3.....finished his career with batting average of 55.....
Mayers normally bats at no.5....even at no.4......after 18 matches his batting average is 33.....even worse.....his 1st test runs 250 is cast aside....till date he has scored 663 runs from 17 matches... averaging 26...which includes another century against Bangladesh...
Kallis 55 + wickets...was bonus...he hardly bowled ahead of Donald, Pollock, Ntini et al....
Mayers abysmal performance with bat + bowling with new ball ahead of Holder 62 matches 153 wickets or Gabriel, Joseph, who are speciallist bowlers....wasted the new ball on most occasions..18 test 30 wickets...then hide in the field and watch speciallist bowlers toil with old, non- responsive kookaburra ball from 20 to 80 overs...no justification....
He is Poor version of Sammy...in white ball cricket also

Mayers passes the eye test according to someone. Thats enough
Not sure what test Chase and Reifer passin though.
In reply to Onionman0
He picked up 3 wickets and has done pretty well with the call, all things considered
His batting form is very concerning though, he needs to start scoring runs, considering how weak the middle order is
In reply to brians_da_best
Now he averaged about 25 batter at 5....after his first test 250..... overall average 32......Reifer & Mayers has no place batting in top 5.....

Time to ditch the bits and pieces Chase and Reifer for the likes of Bravo, King and Athanaze.
If they want a p/t spin option, I'd rather they looked at Cariah.

Top 5 battery in any test team... priority should be run scored and nothing else....
Jason Gillespie batting at 8...scored double century...but was dropped in the next match because as strike bowler...he was not taking wickets...each players has a specific role...
Top 5 batters main role in team is to score runs....
Reifer... averaging 30 after successive fifties against Zimbabwe but falter against Saffies
Mayers...Since his 250 in first test...he is averaging 24 with bat in next 18 matches.. overall average 32
Chase...picked as specialised spinner for Australia tour..batted at no.8....failed in 3 innings but scored 55 in last inning...duly promoted to 6...scored few runs against Zimbabwe... promoted to 5...failed miserably... average 24 in last 3 series.. overall average 26....
All three should not bat in top 5...
Bravo, few others should be given with strict role to score runs....
