Malcolm Marshall played his last game for us, no he did not willingly retired, he was forced out of the team, like so many before him and many other greats after him, like Lara who was pushed out as he was getting ready to meet with the selectors to pick the next team's assignment.
No other cricket nation has discarded so many great players so frequently, with this legacy, small wonder therefore, our players of recent vintage have refused to commit since they now have good options that our greats of yester-year did not have.
Look at each era, you will find the two or three top greats were forced out at each successive era and what is also profound is that in each era, it weakened our position until the eventual crash form the top to the dark bottom in 1995 to which we still languish.

At the conclusion of the 2007 World Cup Lara was invited to continue playing ..but was told that he would no longer be captain ..

Don't forget about Chanderpaul who never received a guard of honour in test cricket but was dropped like a hot potato in an already struggling side.

pray tell! what is the difference between a push and a drop?? eg were Suruj Ragoonath and Lincoln Roberts pushed just before they were about to light the world afire with their batting? or were they dropped?
