i think it's past the time for wi to adopt a similar approach to what the English counties have for their longstanding players - the benefit year
for those not familiar, towards the end of a long career, English counties dedicate a 'benefit year' to players...i think it amounts to financial gains from organised events etc...but more than the finance, it's a mark of respect and recognition for service and commitment
a random list of players of the most recent past who could have benefitted from such include:
Devon Smith
Tamar Lambert
Nikita Miller
this year Leon Johnson
soon it could be guys like Imran Khan, Veerasammy Permaul, Jason Mohammed, etc
this would be especially nice for the guys who did not get the opp to play as much internationally...but again it should not solely be about the finance tho that would help....
and even if they get 1 dollar from the benefit year...the recognition and respect would go a long way...
just a thought

Benefit year for veterans of regional cricket

a good thought and I would support it but it must come primarily from donations from grateful fans and from special functons as gate receipts from FC matches are negligible

How much money do you think someone like devin smith whos played over 40 tests and many ODIs has made? He probably doesnt need a benefit year
Use the money to fund some grassroots coaching and give it to some needy first class players

Best post in years.

on the surface, what you are saying might appear to make sense in one context....those who earned / achieved more should not get (as much?) benefits as those who earned / achieved less
but let us for the sake of argument use a (counter) example and see where it takes us... i work in education so let me take a very simple example from HE
if say 2 young grads - grad 1, grad 2, commenced their career at the same time at Uni X. after 20 years, grad 1 progressed twice as much as grad 2 in academic status terms, for example grad 2 made it to senior lecturer / associate professor, and grad 1 made it to full professor....
would you consider it fair to not offer grad 1 a benefit year because grad 1 earned more due to a higher status earned than grad 2?
what do you think?

Spoken as a true educator
It shouldn't matter how much whoever gets. It's an appreciation of what fans, fickle as they are, have for the individual.
Great idea Doos.
