ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel today named the squad to participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifiers. The eight-team tournament will be played in Zimbabwe from 18 June, as the West Indies look to secure one of the two final places in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup to be played in India later this year.

Ahead of the qualifiers, the West Indies will have a three-match One Day International (ODI) Series against United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah for which the Selection Panel also named the squad for those matches to be played on 5, 7 and 9 of June. These matches will form part of the preparations for the qualifiers.

CWI has given permission to players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to return to the Caribbean for a short break before arriving in Zimbabwe for the qualification tournament.

There are recalls for allrounder Keemo Paul and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who last played in ODIs last July against India in Trinidad. The squad for the three ODIs in Sharjah also includes four uncapped players – left-handed batter Alick Athanaze, as well as allrounders Kavem Hodge, Dominic Drakes, and Akeem Jordan.

Can someone please tell me why Alick Athanaze is not on the World Cup qualifiers ahead of Shamarh Brooks,Yannic Cariah, Chase and to a lesser extent Keacy Carty? Haynes told us that players would be selected based on performance. Well here is a young man that is performing and is being brushed aside by Desmond Haynes and other blind and bias West Indies selectors simply because he is from one of the smallest islands. In the 2017 U19 WC he either topped the batting or one of the top batters. In our recent Caribbean ODI tournament he was either the highest runs getter or among the highest with two centuries. He bettered that up in our four day competition with 3 centuries and the top runs getter with over 600 runs. He is one of the few current players with a fc average of 35 up. They took him to SA but didn’t play him and chose a 32 year old Raymon Riefer with only 1 fC century and who bats at number 8 for Barbados. Today a World Cup qualifier team is picked and our top batsman is again left out!!!

Why are You surprised, I am not surprised, quite frankly what
WE have here is a very well known Adage :

" THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY REMAIN THE SAME "

I am of the opinion that there needs to be a serious and complete restructuring of Cricket in the Region. This must
include The WICBC and ALL the Regional Cricket Boards.

Players must be selected by their Performances not by where
they come from. I have no problem if most players from a Country merit selection I will have absolutely no problem with that , however generally that aint the case .

PLAYERS , IN MY OPINION MUST BE SELECTED , BY THEIR

THEIR PERFORMANCES , RATHER THAN WHAT COUNTRY THEY COME

I didn’t say ‘instead’ of but ahead of. Concerning your all rounder argument, who are they? You consider those 25% batters and 20% bowlers all rounders? We only have one all rounder and that’s Jason Holder, though of late he has been very inconsistent. Arthanaze is a genuine batsman who is also able to bowl like any of the part timers u referred to as all rounders

the truth is! players from the 70s and 80s might have been good and in some cases great players, but, when it come to administration and selection they are o, I would like to see younger minds from the late 90s early 2000s given these positions, I thought it could not get worst than the previous set of selectors, but Desmond Haynes is the worst of all

If they are better then select them, Athanaze is a batsman and should paired with with players selected that as batsman.
I learned about selection as a youth, when David Allan a Wicketkeeper was selected as an assistant keeper to tour England.
Cricket fans in the Leewards wanted a non wicketkeeper in Shillingford to be selected.
During that time, tours to England consisted of 5 test and numerous county games, Wes Hall went to England for his first series, played against more counties on tour, than the last 2 years of our regional 4-day tournaments.
He did not play in any of the 5 tests.
You guys continue to think a few good innings is enough, then discard that couple of innings to another player's couple of innings.
Allyuh keep going around in circles, stopping for someone along the way adding him to the circle you are on.
With the limited amount of cricket being played, and with limited infrastructure promising young players, should be given time within the team to develop, I'll give Athanaze a 3-4 yers series, hoping for progress series by series

Cariah not even sure to make a TT squad. I dunno how he in the mix TBH.

weest indies continue to value its and pieces cricketers than genuine specialists. chase ain't contributing nothing with the bat or ball neither cariah or holder and shepherd is a mediocre bowler.if you have mayers and paul you don't need so much of these types of players in the same squad

I agree with you but if the so called " specialists" don't put their hands up and announce their arrival, then the bits and pieces will abound.

I will give you an example on a lesser scale....Barbados this year dropped Shamar Springer and Dominic Drakes to accommodate specialist bats in Worrell and Jonathan Drakes.

The reality is that Springer and Drakes would make the same runs as Worrell and Drakes BUT considerably strengthen your bowling....Barbados suffered with three losses as a result.

All these bits and pieces players like Chase Holder and Shepherd, who are the specialist players that made themselves available and eligible to replace them.

Never called for Jonathan Drakes nor Worrell. I was always in favor of McCaskie and Wickham. Primus is a white ball specialist not a red ball choice with Simmons and Drakes around.

My feelings was that Springer and Primus would make just as much runs with the bat as Drakes or Worrell.That is the same problem WI have
: The specialist batsmen not scoring more runs than the bits and pieces players who will still take wickets.


I was furious for them ignoring Simmons and dropping Dominic Drakes and also Comarie Boyce for Warrican.

There is no other regional team that would leave out Ramon Simmons, Dominic Drakes and Comarie Boyce after the starts they had to their FC careers all taking wickets and averaging sub 20 with the red ball.

Barbados phucked up.

My brother why are we not all angry with Desmond Haynes and West Indies selectors for not including a talented young specialist like Alick Athanaze on the senior team? At 24 he has put up both hands and feet and Desmond Haynes continues to frustrate him for 32 year old Raymond Riefer. Are you aware Sammy has none of the coaching level, I believe the criteria was for a Level 3 coach.
Someone had to tip Sammy off, because he has no coaching certificate.
That was a set up, quite blatant, a number of coaches in the region, may had refused to apply because they do not have the level required, here is Sammy with no level certification, applied and got the job.
BTW, Otis Gibson did not apply.
